  • Question on reflection/bounce in 2D?

    This is actually pretty simple, but I can't quite seem to be able to wrap my head around this:

    I want to resolve a collision by letting the object "bounce" of the surface the collision took place.

    I do have the normal vector of the surface the collision took place on, as well as the speed of the object as a vector. All of this takes place in 2D.

    I know that supposedly the incoming angle would equal the outgoing angle, but somehow I don't quite *get* how to calculate the new speed vector. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Laptop Acer Aspire 5940G - upgrade GPU?

    Specs here: http://icecat.us/p/acer/lxpfq02088/aspire-series-n...

    Specifically, I want to upgrade my GPU from an ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 to another ATI card of at least the Radeon 5000 series. The reason being lack of support for OpenGL 4 / DirectX 11 in my current one. The problem is that my hardware knowledge is very limited, and I'm not sure about all the things I need to consider doing this. This is purely about the choice of the specific GPU, not about the process of replacing it - I plan to let this be performed by a professional anyways.

    Basically, I know that power consumption and heat production matters and stuff like that, but I can't really judge if my laptop meets the requirements of any specific GPU. Also I am sure that there are other things I need to consider as well that I may not know about. While performance of the GPU is only secondary to me, of course I'd like to get the fastest one that I can still fit in there.

    So the specific question would be, what GPU's could I use with this laptop that fulfill the requirement of having OpenGL 4 support?

    I am looking forward to your replies.

  • What is it with this "Belief is free will" crap?

    You can not choose what you believe in. You believe in what you think is right and you don't believe in what you think is wrong. If you had other criterias for believing in things you would be insane. We do not "choose" to not believe in your god, we just don't.

  • Can any of the people who know Jesus?

    Please tell him to come over and talk to me? That's all it takes for me to believe in him really, and I was told he wants me to. Shouldn't be too much to ask.

  • The religious "Real or Poe" Game?

    Judge the asker of the following question.

    1 means a genuine christian

    5 means a christian impersonation

    and anything between obviously varying degrees of certainty. I honestly can't tell, maybe someone else can clear this up.

  • Would adding LaTeX support to Y!A really be asking for too much?

    repost of http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhbV2...

    I mean, seriously, the Greasemonkey Script "TeX The World" gets it done in 250 lines of JS, and that's including vertical whitespace and comments. Writing and reading formulas without LaTeX support is a huge pain, especially in the science sections. The problem is that not everyone uses firefox, has greasemonkey AND the script installed, so support from Yahoos side would be great - star if you agree.

    (for those who don't know LaTeX, it's a language that allows us to express formulas, graphics, tables and the like with tags that can then be rendered to graphics Codecogs has a latex editor that doesn't require any plugins, but linking to codecogs all the time is quite cumbersome.

    An example:

    [;\sum_{i=1}^{100} \frac{(a+\sqrt{b})^{2}} {b}*C_{i};]

    could be visible in Y!A as this:

    http://latex.codecogs.com/gif.latex?\sum%E2%80%A6

    if there was latex support. As I said earlier, it already is if you have greasemonkey and the right script installed, but this place shouldn't rely on third party solutions so much.

    PS: Yes I realize that Tex The World uses codecogs for rendering which Y!A obviously couldn't for legal reasons, but with a company of the size of Yahoo I don't think that getting an own latex renderer - or purchasing the one of codecogs - would be such a big deal.

  • Need help making sense out of this (dynamics)?

    I'm currently reading a series of articles about rigid body dynamics, and while it's mostly written very comprehensible, there was one example I didn't quite get. It isn't necessary for understanding the article, but it did bother me so I'd be glad if anyone can help me with this.

    There was an explanation of what ordinary differential equations are, and as an example he used air friction as a force that is proportional to the current speed:

    f = -v

    I don't understand how you can equal a force and a velocity, seeing that they express different things. The continuation didn't make it clearer either:

    f = ma = -v

    a = dv/dt = -v /m

    I mean I get the part where it's solved for a, but there was still a force on the left hand side and a velocity on the right hand side. What does that mean? Is that some sort of "equals" sign that just takes the numerical value and ignores the units on either side? Can anybody enlighten me on this? I do feel kinda stupid about it, as it wasn't explained it's probably something simple that can be assumed common knowledge, but I personally have never seen an equation that looks like that.

    (and I know this isn't really a physics problem, but it's not really a mathematical problem either and I had to put it somewhere)

  • Christians, do you really have to ask why your faith is growing in unpopularity lately?

    "Dude, these Idiots don't believe in God

    I wish God would burn them for ever in hell"

    Hard to hear the "love" here.

  • Alright, so, this christian decided god is not omnipotent, do you agree?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsVO3...

    He says god is completely unable to create a world without bad things in which free will exists.

    If so, I'll have to ask what your heaven is supposed to be.

  • Why do so many christians think that...?

    ... "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain" means you are not allowed to make jokes about god? I mean, we don't even believe in god, and do you really think he has such a weak humor that he can't appreciate it? Have you ever thought that it could just mean that believers should not use the name of god to justify evil doings? Cause that sounds more like a sin than making harmless jokes does.

    (Just writing this because I keep seeing "christians" ticking out at every god joke with something like "YOU M0CKED GOD SO NOW YOU GO TO HELL BURRRRNNN")

    Well, as the question said. If I try to link my program I always get a "undefined reference to CreateSolidBrush@4" error. I am using MinGW 4.4.1.

    Warning, if you are a member of the abrahamic religions, this might feel insulting or anything, so I'd have to ask you to think of it as the joke it is.

  • Would you accept medical treatment from a doctor that doesn't understand the word theory?

    I was shocked when I found out Geoffrey Simmons actually has had an education. The University of Illinois must be, or at least have been very liberal to let such a guy pass. I always thought basic biology was general knowledge for doctors.
