  • Need to do a postal survey - help needed ?

I need to do a short postal survey and require to send out a form to a defined group of users and ballot them on a Yes/No basis. They need to put a X in a box and return the form. By what means (cheaply) could I stop anyone photocopying the sheet and thereby posting back several votes seperately . It has to have no tie-up between the ballot paper and any named individual. The outcome of the vote has important ramifications either way to people involved.

    Thanks.

  • Civil Partnership and change of status query ?

Me and my partner have decided to have a civil partnership next year and are starting to look into it all. We intend to double barrel our surnames beforehand and know this must be done by deed poll for it to be legal. My query relates to our status ie Will the CP document automatically and legally ensure that we become Mrs and Mrs instead of Ms and Ms or will we have to do another deed poll change afterwards. Thanks.

  • Best book for learning good grammar ?

I need a good book to learn to teach good grammar and sentence structuring. It must include everything from how to construct a sentence, what a noun is, what a verb is, adjective etc as well as more complicated grammar and syntax.

I'm planning on using it on an ongoing basis for reference so something classic thats tried and tested would be great.

    Thanks.

  • Parents contempt - friend thinks I'm wrong -what do you think ?

Over 20 years ago I disclosed to my parents I was a lesbian. Over the years they have met a few of my partners. I moved back to the village where they live and are now retired about 6 years ago but have not been in a relationship in that time. I have met someone I have fallen in love with and I now seem to be having some difficulty with them accepting me as I am when I did not before.

Both parents have met my new partner for only a few minutes. My father for instance is talking about me being 'the talk of the townn' , 'what will people say' , 'your job prospects will be affected', 'you know how people have a high opinion of you but what will they think of you now' mixed in with this are phrases that are about him and my mother eg its not just you that will be in all this, there's us to think about, have you thought about that and what others will say. Then of course other such stuff as 'its not right, its not natural, its your choice, well what you do...etc. all comes to mind as well.

I have lived a very open out truthful lesbian life and never lied about my sexuality if it came up in conversation yet never rammed it in anyones faces either.

I have been shouted at leered at jeered, mocked make fun of , tormented, verbally abused over my sexuality in the past and I have never retaliated with anything but dignity.

I told my father that I was tolerant of his prejudice and his homophobia and that I still loved him but I would be continuing my life as I saw fit with my new partner who is significant and important.

Today I had a conversation with a friend of mine (single lesbian mother) who has met my father /mother twice and was chatting to her as pals do about said situation and told her I had called my dad a homophobe when she took great exception to this. She told me what a nice man he was-I agree, how lovely he was with her-i agree, how he never showed any signs of anything towards her-i agree, I then went on to try to explain to her that he knew me and her were not an item and also as a friend she lives 4 hours drive away(not on doorstep) but she was having none of it and she felt I was completely unjustified in calling him homophobic. I also explained that he has very good social graces , is well mannnered and good humoured. She said-but he even fixed my watch when we last met ! At this point, I stopped the conversation in disbelief. She then tried to turn the conversation round on me as though I was having an argument and said she was not prepared to talk about this any further as she knew I was wrong and she had to go. The phone call ended very abruptly.

My family have had 20 plus years to get used to this 'lifestyle' as they put it ....but as far as I am concerned me being on the doorstep now and not out of sight and out of mind is the issue and their inate and underlying and strong held contempt is apparent and to me that is homophobia...am I wrong ?

  • MRI Scan Recall - Query for radiologist or someone in the know?

I have a pituitary tumour and am scanned every so often (MRI). The last scan results I'm told were difficult to interpret and so I have been recalled for a further scan. In the letter it makes specific reference asking me 'to confirm I have no metal clips, pacemaker or any kind of metal implants in the body'.

Now this is a pretty standard practice checklist before I have any scan and no I have none of these and when scanned I have no jewellery make-up etc.So all of this was confirmed prior to my last set of scans the ones they cannot interpret and they are asking me to reconfirm.

I have seen MRI scans and the indication in the letter is that something similar to metal is showing on the scan but that really can't be the case or could it ? Sounds a bit cookie but I don't know what a body might show eg magnetic fields ?

    any info anyone

  • Library book date stamped by the librarian - Query ?

I've moved to a small village and up till now I had always understood the date that was stamped by the librarian to be the date that the library book was due for return or renewal.

Mostly I go in before this date to have books returned or renewed so hadn't noticed what they have been doing.

They have been charging ON this date fines for the books as OVERDUE.

I overlooked the last time but today I am going in and if I am chalenged I want to be sure of my ground as i do not intend to pay any fines.

Can anyone with any library experience clarify here.

    Thanks.

  • Changing doctors-change of law soon ?

I understand that a new change of law/ruling will come into force shortly whereby a patient can choose to have any doctor they wish as opposed to be stuck with any that is in the neighbourhood. So for instance at the moment I have neighbours who have to stay with their local very lacking doc and the lists are closed in the neighbouring village to people from ours unless applied with a 'serious ireconcilible problem' via the national practitioner services office as a case.

Can anyone tell me if indeed I am correct in what I have heard and if so when does it come into effect.

    Thanks.

  • Lesbian music teacher jailed for 6 months query ?

last week or the week before a woman who was a music teacher was jailed for 6 months for having a lesbian love affair with one of her pupils.

For some reason I seem to think that the laws of consensual homosexual sex isn't applicable to women -something to do with Queen Victoria not believing women did such things so it never came into force......so why exactly was this woman jailed ?

Does anyone know a) what is the age of consent of lesbian sex if I'm wrong re Queen Victoria and

    b) the legal reason for the womans jail sentence.

    Thanks.

  • A Religious gene - is this possible ?

If as we are discovering that a great deal of human behaviour is largely determined by genetics is it possible that humans are predisposed to being more/or less religious and then depending on how much nurturing is done by parents/school/family in their life a person will be greater or less a believer or a follower of a religious belief system and or God ?

  • TOPAMAX(Topiramate) - Long term studies on cognitive abilities ?

I am on the above drug for complex migraine variants , it has been very succesful except for Hemiplegic and Alice and Wonderland Syndrome,

however I have been noticing changes to my memory, speech and cognitive abilities

.I have always considered myself to be extremely sharp, quick and able eg. I worked with actuaries, was a Project manager, never had to look up tel nos, knew exactly how much my basket of groceries was at the supermarket to the penny, could do the countdown maths quiz at least 4 out of 5 times and my vocabulary was extensive. Now I feel stupid and can hardly string a sentence together let alone add up or do simple maths..

    My queries

    a) If I stop taking Topamax will my cognitive abilities return and

    b) Does anyone know of any published medical papers of the effect of Topamax on cognitive abilities long term ?

I feel as if I have some form of demetia

  • Photographing pictures in a book for personal use - Query?

I'm doing some research on some artists and theres a reference only book in the library (can't take it out). I asked the librarian if I could bring in my camera to take a few pics of the artists pics I eeded and she told me that under copyright that there wasa 100 yr ruling ! so no I couldn't.

Is this right ...did she mean that the 100yrs law applied to the book only because the artists themselves are long dead and the works are hung in public galleries. Does the copyright law still apply for visual work such as in a book of artists work. ?

    Can anyone clarify.

    Thanks.

  • Bromocriptine - affecting sleep pemanently - Now insomniac ?

15 yrs ago I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma-prolactinoma and was borderline surgery. For this I was given the maximum dosage of Bromocriptine and thankfully it reduced in size.

However, the upshot of this was a) I had reactive depression for which I had to have short term anti-depressants and b) I became a chronic insomniac and I have never slept since.

Iam in a constant state of bodily fatigue and feel permanently like I'm jet lagged. When I go to bed I just lie down and am awake hours, just shut my eyes and then go into a state of wakeful disrest as opposed to what I used to remember as a lovely black nothingness. I have charley horse legs which is ghastly too and haven't dreamed since either I just have partial noisy conversations in my head and see buzzy geometric shapes which i take are just eye retinal patterns.?

As the years have gone on my days and nights seem as one.

I ache with the pain of it yet am often surprised at how much I can actually do with this lack of sleep. I don't drive as I'm not allowed to medically as I have blackouts.

I was changed from Bromocriptine to Cabergoline to keep the prolactin levels/tumour size down yet my sleep patterns did not return to normal.

Does anyone have the same experience of sleep problems associated with these drugs and if so is there any cure to help my sleep as obviously I need to be on this drug permanently ?

Could these drugs have affected my sleep permanently as I think they have.

(Prior to this I used to sleep a minimum of 10 hrs a day and my nick name was ...'Rip Van Winkle'. If there had been Olympics for sleeping I would have been a finalist.Never had a problem.)

    Thanks.
