How long does it take to make hay by hand? (man hours/acre)?
Any idea on the amount of man power hours it would take to scythe cut, rake, stack hay on racks per acre? My family always made hay with a tractor, rake, tedder, baler, elevator, etc. I know that there is some down time when hand harvesting and waiting on hay to dry, so I was wondering if anyone knew, if a multi-person crew, switching from cutting to raking, rotating, working in concert could be more cost effective, at say $15 an hour. I'm thinking one guy cuts an acre half the day, while another guy starts raking, then the scythe man, follows him, and they keep trading(something like that).....could 2 people realistically cut, rake, tedder, haul in an acre in one 8 hour day? (assuming it dries the same day of course) I'm pretty sure the fuel/labor/twine/repair costs greatly exceeds $3 a bale/$300 an acre with modern machinery. That just seems like an expensive way to feed a cow over the course of the winter...
2 AnswersAgriculture9 years agoShould corn farmers venture out into other crops instead of relying on Government subsidies?
We have too much corn. What would the country be like if Americans ate less processed foods with high fructose corn syrup and there was a paradigm shift toward grass fed beef? Sure, meat prices would go up, but isn't it a little crazy that you can get a big mack at McDonalds for half the price of a pound of broccoli?

4 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade agoDoes anyone else have trouble pronouncing word that end with an L sound?
Like you feel like that if you sound it out correctly, it will sound robotic and like you're trying too hard to sound like you have good diction.
For example the word ACTUAL. When I say it, it sounds something like "akshuoohh"
2 AnswersWords & Wordplay1 decade agoWhy have so many lower seeded teams made the Super Bowl in recent years?
It used to be one of the teams with the bye almost always made the Super Bowl, Denver, Buffalo, Dallas, San Francisco. Now, I would almost not want a bye. Take Pittsburgh. In 2004 they dominated the Conference, going 15-1. Lost in the AFC Championship Game. The very next season they go 10-6, barely make the playoffs, have to play every playoff game on the road and win the whole thing? It just doesn't make sense to me.
4 AnswersFootball (American)1 decade agoWho else would like to see the Redskins build a new stadium at RFK?
....and yes, I know we need a new team first. I'm still trying to figure out why they have a lease until 2027 with PG County if Snyder owns the stadium. No rediculous dome or 111,000 seat Jerry Jones wannabe. Just about an 80,000 seat replica of RFK would be a dream come true.

Generally speaking. I know it's not exactly the same for everyone.
1 AnswerDiet & Fitness1 decade agoHow much lean weight needs to be gained in order to gain 1 inch around your chest?
....In general of course. I know everyone is different. I've read it's usually 10 pounds or so per 1 inch for the arms, but what about chest?
1 AnswerDiet & Fitness1 decade agoWould someone be able to get hired as a delivery truck driver with 2 DUIs?
(i.e. Fedex, UPS, English Muffins, Coke.....) The first one was a PBJ and never went to conviction, didn't learn my lesson and got popped a few years later, like 1 beer over the limit. My driving record has been spotless for 5 years, and those were the only criminal offenses I ever had.
7 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoDo dogs realize that by eating and drinking, it will make them have to go?
I left my 10 month old at home for 10 hours by himself today (which I usually try to avoid), and he did fine. Obviously, he was anxious to go do the potty and poopy butt right away, but he never goes in my apartment. I noticed he had barely eaten or drank anything from his bowl, as if he knew there was a chance he might not get to go again for a while....
6 AnswersDogs1 decade agoWhat do you call the stuff that is wood trim and goes on the bottom half of a wall?
It's like panelling that goes half way up, with trim that seperates it in the middle, from the drywall upper half of the wall.

I'm trying the pencil line, myself, but it's hard to make it symmetrical and sharp around the edges. Black shoe polish helps.
2 AnswersHair1 decade agoAny Georges out there?
I'm descended from the George family of Loudoun County Virginia. (believed to be of German descent, formerly "Georg") I've done ancestry.com and the LDS. Even gone to the geneology library, but everything gets really vague before the late 1700's, early 1800's, when they got better at keeping church records. Any time I google "John George", it thinks George is the middle name. Further complicating things, is there is a seperate George Family, English, down state, that has alot of stuff online.
2 AnswersGenealogy1 decade agoDid German American Immigrants (palatinates) in the mid 18th century drink?
I know it sounds silly to ask if Germans drank, but early German-Americans seemed to be pretty serious about their religion. My ancestors came here in the 1730's or so and i was just wondering if they loved beer as much as I do! Thanks :-)
4 AnswersGenealogy1 decade agoIf I need to go out of business and my landlord theatens to keep me on the hook for a year left on my lease..?
My business has become a total quagmire. I owe 4 months back rent and am looking for work. I would like to get out of my lease. I think a fair deal would be as follows: "You disolve my lease and don't make me liable for future payments, and I'll agree to work out a payment plan for the back rent........or else.....I file bankruptcy and you get nothing."
Can bankruptcy wipe out back rent?

1 AnswerGenealogy1 decade agoHow common was it for an immigrant's middle name to become their surname?
My last name is George and my ancestors came from the Palatinate in Germany around the 1720's or 30's. None of the ship passenger lists have "Georg" as a last name, but their were many "Johannes Georg _______".

Since Pi is usually used for measuring circles and pies are circular.
