Briefly: I'm a happily married mom of two young kids; I work from home; views include very liberal politics and secular humanism. Right now I'm into gardening and baking cookies - I also love travel and reading, if I ever find the time again...

  • I stopped nursing last week, but my body doesn't know it yet... Any advice?

My son is almost one and we just stopped breastfeeding. He weaned pretty fast - when my daughter weaning it was gradual and let my milk reduce gradually. I have one breast that just doesn't want to slow down, and it's painful. It's been almost a week, I've pumped a little, and I know it takes a long time to completely stop producing milk, but does anyone have any advice on how to relive this without triggering continued milk production?

  • I'm reading "Letter to a Christian Nation" - anyone else here read it? Thoughts?

So far I think it's interesting, but I do find it weird that it is written as a letter to christians, when I'm in doubt that those are actually the people who will be reading it. (I would love to think that they would, though.)

Did reading this book help change anyone's mind about their faith, or do you think it is really targeted to those of us who are already atheists and just need a little moral support in our views? What did you think?

  • Is George Bush trying to bring about "armageddon"?

My husband is convinced that GW, being a "born again christian", believes that he is bringing about the "end of days" and the subsequent return of Jesus by inciting war in the middle east. The idea that he is starting wars and just generally f-ing things up out there is a given, but does anyone think he is doing it out of some religious motivation so he can presumably get to see Jesus "come back" to earth?

  • How long do people wait to tell others they are pregnant?

I just found out I'm pregnant with our 2nd, and I really don't want all of the attention, all of the stupid repetitive questions about how I'm feeling, and all that crap. I'm excited about it, and I don't want to lie, I would just rather not say anything - eventually I won't be able to hide it, I know, but just wondering if anyone else waited a long time to start telling people.

  • Are people who believe in God more likely to believe in other "supernatural" beings?

I think a lot of people also believe in angels, and the devil, and maybe demons. But do you think believers in god are also more likely to extend their belief in at least the possibility of fairies, tree nymphs, leprechauns, ghosts, santa claus or other sorts of things? If you do believe in God, what do you think about the existence of these things?

(If you think that these things are just crazy, then you can understand how atheists feel about the existence of God.)

  • Creepy claymation - is satan god, or is god satan?

Someone just posted this in the Parenting section, and I think some of you R & S people will find it interesting, if not disturbing. It is a claymation "children's show" that was apparently banned from TV.

If I watched this as a child I would have had nightmares and possibly needed therapy.

What do you think about the implication that the character who calls itself satan claims to be the creator of life?

  • Have you tried to convince yourself to believe?

Have you tried to convince yourself that something is true, that you know (or strongly suspect) is not?

Maybe you thought it would be beneficial to yourself or others, or you would fit in better if you did. Maybe you just wanted to see what it is like to believe as someone else does.

Do you think you could do it? Have you ever done it? Would you be afraid that if you did convince yourself that there would be no going back? Is it easy to "decide" to believe something, then change your mind?

  • How do atheist parents deal with religion?

What do you teach your kids regarding religion? My daughter's only 1, so i think we have some time, but how do other parents handle it. When a kid has friends they are going to hear about god from someone, and ask questions. What do you tell them? Do you teach them about all religions, or ignore religion completely?

  • ATHEISTS, PAGANS, OTHERS: If you're at a gathering and someone starts PRAYING, what do you do?

    Multiple choice. Do you:

    A. Pretend to pray, bow your head, even though you don't believe?

    B. Respectfully not participate, but remain seated?

    C. Quietly excuse yourself from the room? (So your laughter doesn't disrupt the others.)

    D. Start yelling out wildly that this disagrees with your own beliefs and everyone else is going to hell?

    E. Request that you add an additional mention to the flying spaghetti monster, or other character?

  • Are you ever hesitant to tell others you are an ATHEIST?

I guess I'm asking, how many of us are closet atheists when it comes to friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances? Do you, in a conversation, skirt around the issue rather than say that you're an atheist because you don't want to get into it with someone? Or don't want to be judged?

I have been an atheist for a long time, but just recently started actually admitting it freely. I never knew that atheists were such mistrusted people, and that we were so discriminated against in the public eye. There is now a lot of media attention, it seems, since the God Delusion came out - or maybe I'm just noticing it now since I read the book.

I'm interested in how others deal with confronting these issues in real life.

  • How's this for funny (bible text replacement)?

I just couldn't resist making a few text replacements (taken from 1 Romans).

1Richard Simmons, a servant of The Great Bob, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of Stinky Cheese,

    3Concerning his Son, the Great Bob The Great Bob our Wheel of Fortune, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;

4And declared to be the Son, the Great Bob of Stinky Cheese with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

5By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the unfounded belief among all nations, for his name:

6Among whom are ye also the called of The Great Bob:

7To all that be in Las Vegas, beloved of Stinky Cheese, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from Stinky Cheese our Father, and the Wheel of Fortune The Great Bob.

8First, I thank my Stinky Cheese through The Great Bob for you all, that your unfounded belief is spoken of throughout the whole worl

  • Unresolved anger issues - any other ex-christian/atheists feel spiteful?

I know I'm not the only one. It's been at least 10 years since I officially quit believing in god, and every time I think I'm over it, I find that I still really hate (the idea of) god, christianity, and religion in general. I think that Yahoo answers is helping me, it's sort of like an AA meeting or something.

Any suggestions to help purge the bitterness?
