  • Pro-lifers: Why won't you celebrate your Conceptionday'?

I tried drumming up support for this idea here and the result was no-no:

    http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201...

But I think this could go the mile. If you really, sincerely think that life begins when a sperm hits an egg, then lets have some beers over it!

To me, its just a reaction that involves combining genetic material and that defines the dorsoventral axis of the embryo that will develop, but I am willing to concede to the viewpoint that it is more than this if it involves keg stands. Come on...

  • Pro-lifers: Do you celebrate your 'Conceptionday'?

If you really think that life begins at conception then that is a momentous event and is worthy of celebration.

Here is an idea for a Conceptionday song (as you blow out the candles on the cake):

    O conceptionday, O conceptionday,

Thy sperm has reached the ovum

(sung to the tune of 'O Christmas Tree / O Tannenbaum', Es lebe hoch der Zimmermannsgeselle and of Lauriger Horatius)

    So, why not?

  • Why is the CMR evidence for The Big Bang?

I am having some trouble understanding why the above is so.

As I understand it, all space between galaxies and generally far from stars contains a very thin plasma that results from absorption of starlight and this space approximates to a black body emitter with an effective temperature of only a few Kelvins. This contrasts with the space around stars, which contains plasma at thousands of degrees kelvin or more. The CMR (as I understand it) is excess heat (or apparent temperature) that is left over from The Big Bang that cannot be explained by the luminosity of stars and will decrease with time as expansion continues.

What evidence exists that proves this is so? (I may also need to be corrected on the above).

  • In the wake of 'The innocence of Muslims' debacle?

Would anyone be interested in watching a decent quality biopic of the life of Muhammad? I mean factual (according to hadith) and also neutral (neither derogatory or flattering) of his person? I sure would but somehow I think the chances of this are in the taxidermy victim excreta territory. Does such a movie exist? Any tips for the leading man?

  • If Shirk is an unforgivable sin in Islam?

does this mean that it is futile for a (Trinity believing) Christian or Hindu to convert to Islam and expect to go to Jannah (heaven)?

    Question for the Muslims here.

This is a survey so please answer with what you think it is according to your understanding / opinion as opposed to by doing research!

  • Muslims and Jews: Will you take my dhabihah / shechita challenge?

Some muslims and Jews say that dhabihah / shechita is the more humane slaughtering method (compared with methods involving captive bolt stunning) and justify the practice on this.

The challenge is to say that dhabiha / shechita is more humane than methods involving captive bolt stunning and then answer the following question:

'If you were to be killed and the options were application of a sharp knife to the throat OR application of a captive bolt gun to the side of the head, which method would you choose?

Please explain why you would prefer the gun for yourself (if you choose it of course).

I know, its a loaded question and not all jews and muslims say this, this question is directed at those who do.

  • Volunteer computing projects for Android OS?

I was wondering if there are any apps available for Android that are similar to BOINC, or folding@home, that use the spare CPU resources of the machine for a good cause. Any leads?

  • Christians: Why do you think atheists have a 'doctrine'?

Atheism is simply lack of belief in gods.

It does not come bundled with the necessity to believe in evolution, not believe in miracles, be pro-choice, be 'liberal' or even be against religion. And it does not come bundled with a science degree from Google either!

Why do you pose questions as if atheists MUST hold views a certain way, and usually the opposite of yours?

    Examples of what I mean:

'Atheists: why do you believe in evolution?

'Atheists: Why don't you like Christianity?'

Atheists: How can something come from nothing?'

Atheism does not address any of these questions and it does not require a person to have knowledge or even have views on these subjects.

Why do you think (or pose questions at least) as if it does?

  • Muslims: Can you fornicate in paradise?

Okay, a slightly humorous way to put the question but it is a serious question.

Islam is well known for its position on marital fidelity, yet every man is to get 72 (or just 'many') 'wide eyed virgins' (houri) in paradise (according to Al-Tirmidhi, Jāmi` al-Tirmidhi).

How do you get around the fact that in this life 72 would be considered adultery? Do correct me if I am wrong here. Is it one rule on Earth and one in paradise? For that matter, do you still have to keep observances such as halal and salat in heaven and, most importantly, can you finally have a good strong drink?

  • I need help with finding some image editing software?

I have some 2D plans to create where I can build the whole image out of several cut and pasted sections in MS Paint. Rather than doing it all manually, I would like to be able to build a whole image automatically by 'dropping' sections into place, tile-style, and then save the whole image composed of modular sections saved as smaller images.

Any ideas for software (preferably free) that can do this, even if command line or text-based, would be appreciated as it would save me so much time!
