  • In your opinion, is it acceptable for a guy to call his girlfriend a sl*t or a whore during sex?

I have my own opinions on it so I don't want advice, just your opinions and why you think that

  • If an autosomal recessive condition has a carrier frequency of 1/35 and one parent is a known carrier...?

If an (imaginary) autosomal recessive condition had a carrier frequency of 1 in 35 in the general population and one parent was a carrier and the other's status was unknown, what would be the risk of their child being affected?

I'm trying to figure out the calculation for this...

Is it: 1/2 (for one parent) * 1/35 (for the other parent) * 1/4 (because it's autosomal recessive)?

    or is it: 1/2 * 1/35 * 1/2 (because if the other parent was a carrier - 1 in 35 chance - there'd be a 1 in 2 chance of passing on the gene) * 1/4?

    Hope someone can help!

  • How many things can you list (physically) smaller than a beanbag and bigger than a CD?

Preferably things I could give my boyfriend for Christmas, but anything you like... Longest list of things in that category will get best answer :)

  • Why does hyperkalaemia cause ventricular fibrillation?

I would expect that more potassium in the blood would mean more K+ in the extracellular fluid, leading to hyperpolarisation of the membranes, so that generating an action potential would be easier, making cardiac muscle more excitable. However, my textbook (Kumar and Clarke's Clinical Medicine) says that hyperkalaemia causes depolarisation of cell membranes leading to decreased cardiac excitability. It also says that hyperkalaemia can predispose individuals to asystolic cardiac arrest, which isn't the same as VF is it?

  • Should I let someone borrow my ID?

It wouldn't be passport or driving license (I need them) and she's only just under age and has been drinking for years (as in she can handle her drink, not as in she has issues) and it's for her friend's birthday.

    Would you?

    PS. I'm aware it's illegal.

  • Best answer for the first person to find me a pair of boots that look like the monopoly boot!?

As stated, I want boots like the monopoly playing piece.

    Preferably UK websites/shops.

I'm a size 4-5 (UK) but would get bigger ones if that's all there is :)

  • What has been your favourite age so far and how old are you now?

My favourite age was 15 years old. I had so much fun: secured my lasting friendships and relationship with my boyfriend, didn't have anything important to worry about, stayed out late, enjoyed school, went to loads of music gigs, went to parties. All good!

    Now I'm 18.

What was your favourite age and why?

  • Is it weird not to miss anyone?

I was at a play (well sort of a play) the other night and a few times the guy invited us to think of someone we miss. I didn't have anyone...

In the short term I miss my friends who are away, my brothers and my dad, but they don't count because I'll see them again and I can talk to them if I want to...

Who was I supposed to be thinking of? Does everyone else miss people in the proper long term sense?

  • Can anyone find me the perfect shoes?

    Hello,

For about the past three or four years I've been wearing some black and white pumps from Faith (not the same pair - had to buy new ones!) and my last pair have completely died on me. Faith don't seem to do them any more and besides, it's time I got something different.

    The ones I had: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FAITH-ROUND-TOE-LACE-UP-CANV...

A pair that I like but my size isn't available: http://www.office.co.uk/womens/office/roll_over_lo...

I'm looking for mainly black shoes that go with anything in a size 4 or 5 that are a bit smarter than my old pumps, but still fun like the office ones. Waterproof is also a bonus, but I'm not too bothered.

So yeah, if any one is bored I would appreciate help :)

  • Where can I buy a work bench lamp?

So I want to go dressed as a lamp to a fancy dress party and I want to have an actual light on me. As it happens I recently went to the theatre and saw 'Operation Greenfield' and there was a hat with a lightbulb on in that. I managed to ask the company about it and they told me it was just a cheap battery powered workbench light... I didn't want to be irritating so I didn't ask any more about it, but I'm a bit puzzled... It looked like a lightbulb on a little square base. The bulb was plastic I think and the switch was a pull cord. Anyone know what I mean and where I can get one?

    Thank you :)

  • Which (free) site should I use to create a playlist for my party?

    Hi

Looking to create an online playlist of 100-200 songs for a party I'm having. I don't want to download all those songs as I'm going for a 'something for everyone' type thing. I've tried grooveshark and mixpod but half the songs don't work... Any suggestions?

Also I use lastfm and jango but I was hoping to create a specific playlist rather than a general station...

    Thanks :)

  • Afternoon pub crawl or out all night?

Next Friday I have the option of a pub crawl with several friends I haven't seen properly for a little while from lunchtime till about 7 or an all night session (starting at about 8) with a friend that I know I'll have fun with and probably some of the pub crawlers will tag along too.

I don't fancy both because that will be too expensive and while it would be great to see my friends I don't know how I feel about getting drunk by 5pm... That strikes me as a little odd. Then again, I don't want to offend them by not going and make it seem like I prefer the night out friend.

    Any thoughts?

  • Does this explanation of why the redox between copper sulfate and zinc is exothermic make sense?

I'm having a bit of an issue expressing myself today, so I thought I'd see how much sense I can make to other people.

"I knew the value would be exothermic, which it is (the negative ΔH value denotes this), because energy in the form of heat was released to the surroundings. It is possible to calculate the expected value for ΔH for this experiment by looking at the equation for the reaction:

    CuSO4 (aq) + Zn (s) → ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu (s)

This shows us that 1 mole of CuSO4 and 1 mole of Zn for 1 mole of ZnSO4 and 1 mole of Cu. This allows us to calculate the energy required to break the bonds in the reactants and the energy required to form the bonds in the products. The values obtained can then be subtracted (products – reactants) to give a ΔH value. In this case the value is -217 KJ mol-1. This tells us that more energy is released in breaking the CuSO4 bonds than is required to form the ZnSO4 bonds. Looking at the reactivity series we see that Zn is more reactive than Cu. This means that it will react more readily with the SO2 2- ions than the Cu will. Because it reacts more vigorously, it will displace the Cu. Equally it will be exothermic because Zn in a compound is more stable than Zn on its own, so it will have released energy."

Also, is that a chemically sound conclusion?

  • Have you ever been called by Golden Globe Holidays? Be warned.?

They phoned me up offering a FREE £1000 voucher to put towards a holiday in one of their apartments. Now excuse my naivety for believing the friendly operator's assurances that it was completely free of charge.

I was then put through to another operator who proceeded to confirm my personal details etc. Finally she confirmed the details of the offer and suddenly decided to let me know about the £299 charge for joining the scheme. At this point I kicked off a little and of course requested the whole thing to be cancelled. I was put through to a manager.

The manager told me that I was the one in the wrong for thinking that anything in this world would ever be free in a distinctly patronising tone. He did assure me that the application had been cancelled but I wanted this confirmed via email or letter (so that I could be sure that they wouldn't bombard me with further promotions etc.) but they refused.

    I am outraged.

    Anyone else heard from them?

    Hang up.

  • What does Plato's Republic reveal about his views on euthanasia?

I'm writing an extended essay on the subject of euthanasia from a largely philosophical viewpoint and, having never studied philosophy, know very little of Plato's Republic. I wondered if someone could enlighten me and point me to some relevant references - much appreciated.

PS. At this moment I don't really want personal views on euthanasia and would really just like some help from anyone who knows their philosophy. Thanks.
