  • Why does a good God let bad things happen?

According to most interpretations of the Bible, God is all-powerful and controls the entire universe. Fair enough. So why do bad things still happen?

You can blame Adam and Eve for choosing knowledge over what is right. You can blame the Devil for tempting them. You can blame yourself for sinning, which has consequences for you.

But this doesn't explain to me why the innocent still suffer. If somebody drives their car the wrong way down the motorway, that's their choice, that's free will (possibly obscured by alcohol), and if they crash, that's their fault. But what about the person they hit? What about the innocent baby or the devoted priest who gets killed in the accident through no fault of his own?

Free will means we have to live with the consequences of our own actions. Why do we have to live with the consequences of the actions of others? Yes, the innocent and the faithful go to Heaven, but they shouldn't have to suffer on Earth.

The Devil is part of the problem. If God is all-powerful, he can destroy the Devil at any time. Don't blame the Devil for making bad things happen.

And one more (related) point: If God hates homosexuals, Ouija boards, prostitutes, etc. so much, why doesn't he just destroy them all, to prevent them from contaminating the rest of the world? It worked for Sodom and Gomorrah.

(An answer consisting of "This just proves God doesn't exist" is valid, but not helpful)
