I'm a 23 year old mom of a 1 1/2 year old daughter, a 4 year old Golden Retriever, a 4 year old Old English Sheepdog, and four cats (my husband's in there too). I work at a dog daycare, training, boarding, and grooming kennel and am a dog trainer.

  • Why can't I use cold water to make Jello Eggs?

I am attempting Jello Egg Shots (in the spirit of the holiday and all, got to be festive), but jello.com's recipe says not to add cold water, and you put the vodka in at the cold water part. What would happen if I did it that way?

  • OES owners - does your dog dance?

I spotted a few of you down below.

If you start rubbing Barkley's butt, he starts wiggling and dancing and hopping (he's had both back feet airborne at once). I know OES's love a good butt rubbing, but I've never seen one dance like he does! My MIL has had two and there are two that come to work regularly and none of them do it. We're trying to teach him 'dance' on cue.

  • How can I get digg/del.icio.us/rss buttons on my blog?

I'd like to add them so people can click on them and share, but I can't get them to work.

  • Small/dwarf trees/tall shrubs ideas?

We'd like to have small trees around the inside of our fence. Any recs? I am in zone 5b-6a. I don't want anything over 10 (15, I think, is the absolute limit). I love the look of white birch, I'd do the whole backyard in them if they came small enough. Do they have dwarf white birch?

I have some Japanese maples picked out already. We need quite a variety.

  • Meet my new foster puppy!?

    http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm288/stacylc21...

Isn't she cute? She was taken from her mom at four weeks, and is recovering from a broken leg, and so I am keeping her until we find her a forever home...she's too little and has been through too much to grow up at the kennel. Give me a crate train refresh - it's been three years since I've had a puppy! (The crate, with divider, is already set up, and the kong is freezing).

What are we thinking on the mix? She is supposedly a pittie, but I think I see cattle dog in her.

  • What did I do to my seedlings?

Husband and I started a bunch of seedlings. This is our first foray into gardening that does not consist of buying a shrub, digging a hole, and inserting shrub. We don't know what we're doing. We've been bringing them all out for sun every morning and bringing them in at night. Mine are in one of those plastic mini-greenhouse things. I had a bunch of alyssum growing. They looked really good this morning and how they're all shrively and wrinkled. What did I do?

  • Is there a glaze paint you can safely use outside, on concrete?

I am using concrete paint to paint some stepping stones we got. I would like to make them look shiny. Can I? I don't want to run all the way to the hardware store to find out there's nothing you can use.

  • Can I leave my seeds outside yet?

We have a bunch of peat pots/mini greenhouses set up, and we've been leaving them outside all day (it's in the mid 60s - mid 70s here). Nights are in the 50s. Can we just leave them out?

  • Owners of herding breeds - a question?

We are looking at a six acre piece of property, and we would want to put some alpacas and peacocks on it. We have a 3 1/2 year old Old English Sheepdog. Do you think they would get on? He is a baby and I think he would be mostly afraid of them (he hid under my husband's desk growling and shivering for two hours when we brought home a mylar balloon for my toddler), but he is a herding dog, after all. He does herd the cats. I just don't want him bothering and kicking. I know I have lots of research to do on a true herding dog/farm animal relationship (and getting the animals is at least three years down the road, we probably won't even build for that long). I'm just curious.

  • When building a home, are wetlands automatically off limits?

We are looking at a six acre piece of land with 'some wetlands' on it. We were walking around on it tonight and it's not exactly a swamp. Are you not allowed to build on any area deemed as wetlands, or are only certain types protected?

  • Where do you hang bird houses, feeders, and hummingbird feeders?

I know the obvious answer is 'trees', but we don't have any big enough in our yard yet. I was thinking about on the fence posts, or maybe getting some tall plant hooks? Give me your creative ideas. I do have two eighty pound dogs.

  • What is the most philanthropic thing you've personally seen done for animals?

We've all heard amazing stories, but what about in person?

When I volunteered at the SPCA, some twelve year old boy felt bad for the animals, so he managed to raise tons of money (I still don't know how he did it), and he and his parents came in one night with bag after bag of food to give us. I think the count was fourteen huge bags, and that was just cat food (that's where I was that night). How wonderful of him.

Also, at the last round of training classes, there was a woman and her daughter there with their new rescued greyhound, whom I drooled over at each class (the favor was returned, making the longing worse). The mom told me her daughter saved up every sent for two.years. to adopt this dog. She was eight years old, I think.

  • How do I attract bats to my bat house?

Or will just putting it up be enough? Where should I put it? Somewhere far away from a light, or doesn't' that matter?

  • Do bats eat butterflies?

I'm planning on putting a butterfly garden in my backyard, and I was looking at other ways to make my space more wildlife friendly. I was thinking about a bat house, for natural pest control (and I think they are neat), but do they eat butterflies?

  • Do you divide yuccas? What's the best way?

I have a yucca that bloomed last year (we've had it for a few, this was the first year it flowered). Now there are two or three offshoots coming out from under it. Can I dig it up to make more plants? Which way do you suggest?

  • What dog-related issues are most frustrating to you?

Working with them every day, it changes from day to day with me (I imagine it's that way with a lot of you, too). I will make a list.

-Homeless red nose that we have had for five months and can't place. They either want him just because he's scary, won't consider him because he's scary, or are completely in love with him (all of us) but have some reason we just can't take him.

-People who are in complete denial of the neglect they make their animals suffer and happily carry on as if we can't tell.

-Puppy mills (for some godawful reason, my coworkers and I thought it would be a good idea to find and watch Oprah's puppy mill show...bad idea. We were sobbing and hugging all the homeless babies we have.

-People who buy puppies as gifts for family members because they're cute (A JRT! For an 87 year old!)

    You?

  • Nail grinders?

So I think I have finnnnally chosen what dog I want for my third, an Italian Greyhound. Before I email the adoption rep, I am researching how much all the supplies will be so I can get ready (which I will be addressing in a separate question). Husband walked in on me looking at nail grinders and asked why I was bothering when I got him a Dremel for Christmas. I opened my mouth to tell him and...nothing came out.

Is there a difference, or would a Dremel do the same job?
