Where do you hang bird houses, feeders, and hummingbird feeders?
I know the obvious answer is 'trees', but we don't have any big enough in our yard yet. I was thinking about on the fence posts, or maybe getting some tall plant hooks? Give me your creative ideas. I do have two eighty pound dogs.

My husband put a 12 foot tall wooden square post in ground with cement. I have made this my bird feeding station. On top I have barn like bird feeder with suet cages on each side of the feeder ( got it at Menards) On each side of pole I have a 15 inch hook and hang a couple goldfinch feeders or hummingbird feeders. Also I have nailed up small suet feeders on sides of post. It works great and I have it all in one area. I also run morning glory vine up in summer to cover up the pole.
Also I use tall iron plant hanger (shepard's hook) with double hooks for larger feeders.
Here are some links with a few ideas:

This last link is similiar to mine but has the longer wooden arms which I really think is pretty cool...I might have to change mine after seeing this station.

I hang my hummingbird feeders from the house.
If you put a blue bird house up it's better to put them up with a 6 inch stove pipe under them to keep snakes and raccoons out. Bluebirds like it away from the trees and in open field on a pole. Along a fence is also good. Blue birds have blue eggs in my bird houses already this year so get your house up soon.

Tall plant hooks would work fine for feeders, but bird houses do much better up very high. I have a low-hanging bird house on the tree outside at my house, and in a couple of years, still nothing in it =P
If you can, hang some humming bird feeders from your porch or install some hooks on the overhang from your house and hang it there. Its fun to watch the humming birds come and eat outside of your window.
Also be careful with regular bird feeders, the squirrels will go nuts after them too.
At my house (im at my grandparents alot too, so I have to differate the two places xD) we had to remove the bird feeder, we had too many birds and squirrels gathering in our yard, and tearing it up. Humming bird feeders are fine, but if you have ALOT of birds be careful with bird feeders.

I don't have any big trees either. I put my bird houses on my privacy fence. They aren't very high up, but the birds have been in them the last 2 years, same with the feeder. They are not along the top of the fence because the neighborhood cats sometimes walk across the top, still haven't figured that out, but they can't reach the birds without falling off the fence.
Don't paint on them, the birds don't like the toxic smells & put them low enough that you can get to them to clean them out before the birds move in. They like a clean house too.

I use long plant hangers I got at Wal Mart I hang one from my gutter in front of my window for hummingbird and also one with sunflower seeds one warning be sure there is a rubber tip or metal hanger may pierce the gutter. I do not have large trees so I came up with this. I also hang bird houses on tall shepherd hooks and the birds use them Good Luck

Bird houses should be in trees because of shade. On a post the sun will bake the babies and they will not be hidden from predators. Feeders and hummer feeders can be put any where.
