  • Why are people so entrenched in the concept of proof when referring to religion?

I am a Christian who has studied my faith for the majority of my life. In no corner of the Bible or of any other texts do I find anything that leads me to believe that God exists other than the circular logic of God exist because he is in the Bible, and the Bible is correct because God made it that way, which is not really proof at all because of the unsound reasoning within circular logic. On the other hand, I have never seen an experiment that definitively shows the lack of existence of God, because there is no testable hypothesis through which He can be proved or disproved.

Therefore, why do people try to find proof of God's existence, when clearly his existence is not bound to science? The discipline of religion does not deal with proven fact, similar to how the other Humanities are not bound to scientific fact (see poetry, art, etc.).

  • Place to meet new people?

I am 20, and I need a way to meet new people. All of my current friends have become druggies or never want to go out and do anything, and those aren't the kind of people I want to hang out with. I'd rather not go out to clubs, mostly because I dislike that scene. I just don't know where to go because I have never needed to. Thanks for the help.

  • Straight People: would you want to switch sexes for a day, just to know what it's like to be homosexual?

I don't know about you guys, but if I could have a day where I could be a woman, I would take it just to les out. I mean, that just sounds awesome.

I suppose I will also extend this to homosexual men and women, if they would want to be a man or a woman for a day just to be straight for a day.

  • Why do Protestants insist that the Bible is the only source of truth when...?

According to Protestants, the Bible is said to be the unadulterated version of what Jesus said, but ALL of their Bibles were edited and put together by people after 1500 AD, using a previously written Bible as their source and editing it to fit to what they taught (Calvin was amongst the worst offenders, by the by), and then Protestants give Catholics crap for listening to people who have devoted their lives to studying the Scripture, when the founders of their denominations were nothing different, and their current pastors are the same. Oh the hypocrisy! I wish that people weren't so blind and arrogant.

  • Done in the name of utopia?

Don't you just love what has been done in the name of creating the perfect world? Holocaust, communism, 9/11, genocides after genocides, war after war. I think we need to just accept that this world will never be perfect, and quit trying to make it thusly.

  • Muslims: is this true about your faith?

Is it true that Jesus is the second and only other person besides Adam who has an original soul according to your faith? I am not saying this to imply he was the Messiah, as I know he was the last prophet before Muhammad according to your faith, but I was taught this in a world religion class, and I was curious as to how accurate that statement was.

  • How can anyone honestly BELIEVE that abortion is not the killing of a human?

I read an article about abortion, and I was astounded to find out that the scientific community has settled that human life begins at conception.

  • What do Americans think or know about Columbus, Ohio?

I am doing a survey on how popular Columbus is, and whether people know it as just the capital city of Ohio, or if it is something more to them.

  • Does Revelations necessarily mean that the world will end catastrophically, or could it means something else?

Traditional thinking leads people to have certain fixed views about the "End of Times." Most of these views in modern-day America are based on the tale of the end as depicted in the book of Revelations. Could, however, it be that Revelations is merely a book written for us to understand symbolically? In my opinion, there will be no Armageddon, no Ragnarok, merely, those images have been construed around the idea that we are all mortal, and none will ever know the day or the hour to their own death. What do you think? Does anyone else think that Revelations is a symbolic book?

  • Is it so terrible to learn about religion?

If the courses are fair in the way the religions are presented, how are they any different than, say, a culture course. It's not like religions don't play an important role in today's world. Wouldn't it be better if Americans understood the beliefs of others rather than live with an ignorant/arrogant view of the world?

  • Does it have to be Science versus Religion? Why can't it be Science AND Religion?

I find it so easy to reconcile my own beliefs and what I know about science, so why is it such a challenge for people to accept scientific ideas? Is it not merely the discovering of who and what we are, and what God, or the gods, has made for us?

I suppose to ask people to accept religious doctrine is difficult, because there are so many faiths, but why are there those who vehemently reject that which cannot be explained or proven with scientific means? Is it not the unknown that drives us forward, gives us hope of a day which we can finally come to an understanding of what that unknown is, and what it does for us? If so, wouldn't an infinite source of unknown, that which we cannot know because it cannot be tested, be the ultimate source of inspiration?

Lastly, why is this as big of a problem in the U.S., and virtually nowhere else in the world? Is it because of the fierce individualism that permeates the plethora of Protestant faiths, a trait only America seems to exhibit, is it because of the large number of atheists in America, or is it something else, something deeper entrenched in who we are as Americans, always doubting, always at odds with convention, ever asking the question, "Why?"

  • My cousin's half-sisters daughter. What is she to me?

I am going to introduce this girl I know to my friends, but I don't know what to introduce her as. This is the family relations between us: my uncle, before he married my aunt into the family, had a wife and kids. He had a divorce, and then married my aunt, and they had kids. So, therefore, the kids he had in his first marriage are half-siblings to my cousins. Well those half-siblings grew up, and had kids of their own, one of which is the girl. We were born within literally minutes of each other, because of some age gaps between my dad and his sister. I have known her my whole life, but I have never known whether to call her (Cousin or just friend?) What is the right way to introduce her as?

  • Belief in God + Big Bang Theory?

So, I am a Catholic, and as a Catholic I am taught that God exists, guides us imperceptibly, that Jesus was his son, that most of the Bible is to be taken figuratively, and when it comes to morality, I should look to a large group of theologians (who hold the real religious authority in the Church) for guidance. I am also taught that when it comes to science, don't ask the Church, ask a scientist on what is the most valid theory. Odd as that may sound, that makes total sense. I do believe that God made heaven and earth, but I know that the universe likely started about 13-11 billion years ago due to the Big Bang, or even possibly due to the collision of the membranes of parallel universes. I believe that God is the origin of all life, yet I hold vigorously that modern evolutionary theory is the correct story of life. For me, this all makes sense. Why, then, do I take flak from both ends of the spectrum? My view is a compromise, an acceptable medium for the left and the right of this discussion. What are everyone's thoughts on my beliefs/understandings?
