My 6 week grand daughter has been placed in my custody due to her parents opiate addiction.The baby was ordered by our Florida department of children and families, case worker, to undergo a drug screen because her mother breast feeds her. The mother submitted a diluted UA to her drug counselor two weeks prior. (Low creatine sample)

Our case worker informed my daughter, that should she submit any further suspicious drug screens, the situation will be handled in the same fashion, the baby (not mother) will again be ordered to the hospital, catheterized and screened for opiate.

I find this odd, even our case worker admits, drug screens on a breast fed infants are generally negative or at best inconclusive do to the low levels of drugs that are released into breast milk.

Why would DCF choose to subject the baby to this invasive, uncomfortable and unnecessary procedure? It seems as if they are punishing the baby for the sins of the mother. Should`t DCF drug test the mother first? They have not tested her since her diluted UA.

The DCF case worker advised my daughter to discontinue breast feeding. My daughter and her drug treatment counselor feel this is wrong. The drug counselor specifically, encourages my daughter to continue nursing. The baby’s urine test did come back negative for drugs.
