  • How can rape ever be funny?

I think it is a serious and confronting issue that wrecks lives but sometimes it is portrayed in the media as something comical to be laughed at, especially when it is the rape of men. An example is that movie, 'the wedding crashers'. Vince's charater wakes up and is handcuffed with the chick having sex with him, he then tries to escape. If it were a woman, would this have been handled in the same way? I think not. This is not the only movie where I have seen a rape of a male glossed over as if it is nothing (you can also see 40 days, 40 nights. again handcuffs, asleep, he doesn't want it). Is this because people think men can't be raped or because people are just more sensitive when it happens to women? Please enlighten me.

  • Why do people ask questions that generalise about a whole group?

I often see questions like, "Why are all Americans racist?" etc. Why don't people realise that to catergorise everyone who lives in a certain country or whatever serves the same purpose as racism. They have a prejudice against a whole group of people, to me this is similar to racism. Does anyone else agree?

  • Do women need to possess 'masculine characteristics' to be taken seriously?

My friends were discussing women who have been in power etc and everyone seems to describe them as 'manly'. Can 'feminine' girls retain this 'feminine' aspect and still break the glass ceiling?

  • Will the term 'gender roles' still exist in 50 years?

If I used this term in a conversation with someone in the future, would they have any idea what i was talking about? Or do you think that they will still be very well defined?

  • What are the biggest stereotypes of men that need to be overcome?

We always hear about stereotypes of women but what do men think about norms of masculinity?

  • Applying for teaching positions in Japan?

I'm wanting to teach English in Japan next year and was interested in being an ALT. In early January, I am planning to go to China and then to Japan for the start of the school year. However, my problem is that I have found that most ALT positions do interviews only once a year in October or whatever and I was wondering if this leaves enough time for everything to be organised (placement, visas etc) before I go to China? Or are there any good companies that do year round interviews in Australia? Or, should I alternativly, just apply for an Eikaiwa school (most probably AEON as this seems to get less bad reviews),who do interviews year round, and change to an ALT position after a year? I would love to hear from people who have done something similar.

  • Can people look at questions of race etc. objectively?

That is, can people answer questions to do with particular issues without taking into account their own race or ethnic group or can we only draw on our own experiences.
