Trying to display error message in Java?
I am trying to display the error message for a program. The program extracts links from a webpage. This is the code so far:
if (webpage.startsWith("$eror$")) {
errorMessage = webpage.substring(7);
System.out.println(errorMessage);
break;
}
The correct output is:
Searching http://anunknownhost/
Searching for: all links
java.net.UnknownHostException: AnUnknownHost
This is my output:
Searching http://anunknownhost/
Searching for: all links
Number of Links Found: 0
Can somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you very much!
1 AnswerProgramming & Design9 years agoAre there any methods in Java that let me do this?
Hey, I am currently working on a programming project for my CS class. We have to extract links and use while loops. All the links must start with "http://"./ I want to know if there is some sort of method in Java that lets the program sift through user input and only consider the links beginning with "http://"./
I have never programmed before, and I am in my very first class. So, please, nothing too advanced. Thanks!
3 AnswersProgramming & Design9 years agoIs statistics a hard major?
I plan on majoring in statistics when I enter college this fall. I have heard from some people that this can be a challenging major since it requires a lot of computer science and advanced math classes. However, I took AP Statistics this year and I did really well. I talked to my statistics teacher and she said I should do fine in college. I am just a little worried because I am not confident in my math skills. Any advice? Thanks.

Ugh...I'm almost halfway through junior year, and I seriously need to start thinking of careers...but the thing is, I want to do so much that I just can't decide. I love languages and law, but I would also love chemistry and engineering! I would love to have a job that would let me travel too. I'm really torn between becoming a lawyer or an engineer. Is there anyway I can come to choose what I want to be?

1 AnswerChemistry1 decade agoWhat should I do for a living?
I'm currently a junior in high school and before I know it, college will be right around the corner. The thing is, I still have no idea what I want to do as a job. I know everyone says that I have plenty of time to figure it out, but I feel as if I should know soon, that way I can search for some colleges specifically related to what I want do. I was considering engineering (one of the top engineering schools is in my home state) or law, but I really love foreign languages (I have been learning French for almost five years and I'm starting to take up German and Japanese) and history as well. I would love to be able to travel and explore the world, and I was considering international business, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Any colleges? My dad wants me to be an engineer, but my mom says she'll support me no matter what. Any help is very much appreciated!

a) A car makes a 64.0 km trip with an average velocity of 40.0 km/h in a direction due north. The trip consists of three parts. The car moves with a constant velocity of 23 km/h due north for the first 15 km and 61 km/h due north for the next 32 km. With what constant velocity (magnitude and direction) does the car travel for the last 17 km segment of the trip?
b) You are on a train that is traveling at 3.0 m/s along a level straight track. Very near and parallel to the track is a wall that slopes upward at a 12° angle with the horizontal. As you face the window (0.98 m high, 1.9 m wide) in your compartment, the train is moving to the left, as the drawing indicates. The top edge of the wall first appears at window corner A and eventually disappears at window corner B. How much time passes between appearance and disappearance of the upper edge of the wall?
c) Two runners start one hundred meters apart and run toward each other. Each runs ten meters during the first second. During each second thereafter, each runner runs ninety percent of the distance he ran in the previous second. Thus, the velocity of each person changes from second to second. However, during any one second, the velocity remains constant. Determine how much time passes before the runners collide, and determine the speed with which each is running at the moment of collision

I'm really starting to think about my future, and so far, I have narrowed it down to these three options. But I really can't decide! I'm good at math and science, but I love history and social issues. I also want to help people, and I don't want to go to school for over 8 years. I can imagine myself doing any of these. My parents want me to choose by the end of the summer, but I'm not sure if I can. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! :)

1 AnswerHomework Help1 decade agoNest summer??? What should I do?
I received an invitation to attend the PAVE Pre-college program at Vanderbilt University, and I really want to go. But, I don't know if I should attend that or spend my 2011 summer volunteering. I want to do both, but both are six week programs that fall at about the same time. What should I do? THe PAVE program starts on June 20, but they say you can come late if you need to. My hospital volunteering will probably end in mid-July, so if I miss the last week of that, could I still be able to go to the PAVE program. Grr...I just really need some help. Any would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
1 AnswerOther - Education1 decade agoAre these schools I should apply to...?
UGA, Emory University, Georgia Tech, UPenn, and Yale.
I'm currently a rising junior in high school. I have a 4.0 GPA and a 99.0%. I participate in Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, French National Honor Society, French Club, and I was on the staff of my school's literary magazine. Nest year I hope to join National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Science Honor Society I haven't had any leadership positions in freshman or sophomore year, but I hope to get ones in FNHS, French Club, and be an editor my junior and senior years for the Lit. Mag. I have won a lot of awards my freshman and sophomore years in writing, math, science, art, and French. I was nominated for a Governor's Honors thing for French but I only made it to the county finals. However, I did place in the top ten percent (nationally and at the state level) for the National French Exam. I volunteer at a local hospital, and I hope to volunteer at my church as well. I currently have a job at Kumon (a tutoring center) where I work once a week.
I have taken the highest level of classes available at my school, which is one of the best public schools in the county. By the end of high school, I would have taken 11 or 12 APs. These are all I have taken so far:
9th
AP Human Geography (5)
10th
AP World History (still waiting on the score)
These are the ones I have yet to take
11th
AP Language and Composition
AP Calculus BC
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B
AP Us History
12th:
Calc 2
AP Biology
AP Gov/AP Econ
AP Literature
AP European History (maybe)
Internship (maybe)
AP French
I haven't taken the SAT (on my practice I got an 1870) or ACT yet, but I am practicing right now. As a career, I hope to go into either medicine, law, or engineering of some sort (I still haven't decided). I hope to get over a 2200. I also plan on taking SAT 2s.
