Lets consider the case of a person who is born normal and has a normal childhood but then as a teenager they develop a mental illness such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). And so the person wants to know, why did this mental condition happen only to me and not to the other teenagers in my town? According to the teachings of the Muslim faith, is this a sign that Allah has decided to punish this person? I am asking is there a cause and effect relationship here? LIke, the person does something bad and Allah inflicts the disease as a punishment. Or, is it better understood that the person is basically good and that they have been attacked by some evil power or the devil? Or is the disease just some random event? Or is the disease given by Allah but for reasons known only to Allah and not necessarily as a punishment? What is your understanding for this case?

I have a young Muslim friend who is suffering with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD and some people in his life are saying he is being punished by God for doing some bad things in the past or currently. Is this idea (mental illness as a punishment from God) a correct concept within the teaching of your religion?
