  • Should advertising a faith in a non-Christian belief be banned? The US public seems to think so...?

"According to an AOL poll, Christianity Is THE ONLY Religion That Deserves Its Own License Plate"

Read this article before answering else you will not know what the question is about:

    http://www.skepticalmonkey.com/other-claims-in-que...

What do you think? If its OK to advertise that you are a Christian should you be able to advertise that you are Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Heathen or even Atheist?

Not being American I am interested in hearing what you guys think, after all this law could effect you, someday, soon.

  • Thundering Þórsdagur! Modern Sacrifices?

I was driving to work this morning and thinking about sacrifices. In the past our ancestors sacrificed swords, mead, boars, cattle even horses and it struck me how pathetic our modern offerings are when we sacrifice to the Æsir.

To our ancestors a boar would be at least a week's food supply, a cow maybe 3 to 4 weeks, a horse would equate to a modern car! Sacrifice means to give something we cannot afford to be without; take a sword these were ultimately prized and of great value, when did you last sacrifice something worth half or more of your savings?

Maybe we should burn £50 notes (around $75US each) at blot not offer a £8.50 ($13US) bottle of mead? Of course this is due to consumer society and changes in technology but shouldn't our sacrifices reflect this? It makes me feel ashamed and disrespectful to our truly generous ancestors.

  • Are there any members of the Romuva faith on Y!A?

I was wondering if anyone was a follower of the Lithuanian Romuva faith on Y!A. This faith although from the Baltic is quite unlike the Germanic/Norse Heathenry yet has some similarities. As the peoples of this region must have been in contact with with the Norse through geographic location and Lithuania remained pagan long after even Iceland became Christian I believe that modern Heathenry must have something to learn from this faith; both include animism and a complex pantheon governing our existance in the northern European ecocsystem. The Oseberg ship burial contained a woman with hemp seeds, no evidence other than this connects Nosre beliefs with hemp, however Romuva has Vaizgamtas the god of hemp and flax, coincidence?

  • Heathenry/Paganism; how can humans create sacredness?

My belief is that all things have a latent spirituality, be that a place, a stone, a tree, an animal or a person etc.

Many people talk of magic wands, hallowing spaces, magic tools, special amulets. I do not see humans as some divine creature that can create sacredness but only possess the ability to see sacredness. If we stumble across a pond with a special energy we recognise this energy, if we find a crystal that talks to us we can use it but we have not made these things sacred.

So here is the question, why and how do some people think they are so special that they can create something better/more sacred than nature has already created? (or when did the Vanir retire and make you gods?)
