I'm currently reading D.C. Dennets "Consciousness explained" and I think I can mostly agree on his viewpoints

My understanding of his theory is more or less the following: Consciousness arises when we somehow "talk to ourselves", one of our thoughts is somehow being "taken out" and pondered upon by our language center. (Sorry, I can't really find the right words, English is not my first language).

This is different from the other materialistic theory I knew about, which is that consciousness arises due to complexity.

Dennets theory implies that animals like cats or dogs are totally unconscious.

Since the book is from 1991 I am curious if there have been new theories and if experiments have been done that either credit/discredit any of the current theories, and if there is actually any progress being made in this field.

So, I just reached 4000 points, it took me 8 months and 7 days, and I think I should celebrate by asking a question. Since I have nothing special to ask it is this one.

Any tips about what to do, where to go (culture, eating out etc..)?

I saw a question: what is the best university in ... , but I first read universe instead of university, which is much more interesting. So do you think there are (parallel?) universes, are they better or worse than ours? Also: is our universe bended in a 4th (or more?) dimension and therefore finite in size yet infinite?

I'm 41 years old, from Holland, divorced, I have 2 daughters and 2 cats, I live in Amsterdam but I don't smoke pot (really!). I'm a computer programmer and somewhat of a nerd:) I have a girlfriend who is somewhat overweight. I like to drink too... I'm left -liberal and an atheist too!

I will cook for my girlfriend, she doesn't like beans and I had pasta yesterday.

What shall I cook tomorrow: tomorrow my daughters of 13 and 11 will eat with me and my girlfriend, they are vegetarians but they eat fish.

Will a global disaster take place? or will we survive into the next millenium and beyond? Will we be followed by an even more intelligent species? Or will we create robots that will eventually replace us? Or will a global disaster wipe out all larger animals on this planet? Will other planets be inhabited by humans?
