  • advice on new computer needed by technophobe (UK)?

    Hi there,

I have a basic notebook computer which is my first one ( at the age of 52 ! ) and am now considering updating to something bigger.

My question is : when I buy a new computer what,if any, functions do I have to change/ update, or are they simply transferred to the new system ?

For example, do I have to get a new e-mail address, will my existing Norton security be automatically transferred and do I have to set up new accounts (eg Amazon) again ?

Thanks in anticipation for your advice

  • POLL: C'mon,is nobody trapped in their burning home or locked in their bathroom today ?

I used to think that YA contributors must be some of the unluckiest people around- forever trapping themselves in their burning homes or locking themselves in ( or out ) of their bathrooms !

However, they always seemed to have the foresight to have their computers to hand and what better-and more logical- to do than to have the YA community to chat to as your house burns down around you !

Lately, however such occurrances seem to have subsided - have those unfortunates now learned (from their YA answers, of course ) how to cope in such emergencies or did they carry on mailing for just a little TOO long, and have, tragically, now removed themselves from the gene pool ?

The best answer, from any survivors, will be rewaded with10 points (while they are still alive to enjoy them)

Hi Guys, can someone tell me what the small round ( battery-size, about an inch long) device is fitted to power cables just before the connection to the pc ?

I've seen them on other appliances also and never figured out what they are for.

    Thanks

  • PVCU door euro lock question?

My front door lock has suddenly started playing up.Instead of simply turning the key and depressing the handle I now have to hold the key clockwise as far as it will go before the handle will turn.

I can lock the door from the INSIDE perfectly ok. its just outside that its a problem.

  • Gas/ electricity meters in the U.S?

Hi Guys, as a meter reader in the U.K I am curious to know what types of domestic PRE-PAYMENT meters you have Stateside.

Ours use cards or 'keys' which are 'topped up' in shops etc. Do you have any COIN meters still ?

Are any meters read remotely yet (ie Smart Meters) ?

    Thanks

  • 'Seasoning" - to salt or not to salt ?

In recipes, when told to add "seasoning" does this refer to BOTH salt AND pepper - or just whatever you like. On T.V chefs inevitably add BOTH. Why? What is the relationship between them, and if you were watching your sodium intake and just used pepper would it affect the taste because the other was omitted ?

What are the different types of salt (ie sea and rock) used for ?

  • Pre-cooked pies. Are they safe to microwave ?

First, thanks to all who offered suggestions to stop me burning my omelets -they're improving already !

Todays question is about pre-cooked pies/quiches etc from the supermarket. The cooking instructions usually tell you to bake but as my oven is not working can I microwave or grill (making sure they're hot all the way through of course) or is there some particular reason they MUST be baked?

  • Hi all you sci-fi buffs. Trying to find name of a 60's ? U.S film about aliens on earth.?

Only saw this movie once as a kid in the 60s and was impressed by it but could never remember the name. The premise was that the aliens took on human form and their true form could only be seen through a pair of red visors. The final denouement saw the 'hero' being revealed as an alien through a visor lying on the ground. Any ideas guys ?
