  • Besides emotions, on what can you base your mood?

I find that my mood is oftentimes based too much on my fluctuating emotions. Besides emotions, what can you base your mood on? And is there any books people would recommend on this?

  • Grad School for Electrical Engineering - Biomedical?

I'm looking for a graduate program (PhD level) in Electrical Engineering that has research that tends towards biomedical engineering. I am not sure how to even start this kind of search besides going from school to school and checking out their research and since I don't know what schools to look at, this makes it rather difficult. Any advice of schools or search techniques would be greatly appreciated!

  • Spread of heat across a metal?

I'm looking for either an equation or a graph or just a way (linearly vs quadratic, etc) of how heat spreads across a metal.

Scenario: You heat one end of a metal rod to a certain temp and cool the other end to a certain temp. Is there a linear relationship between distance and temperature across that rod?

  • Temperature Gradient of a metal (copper)?

If you have a metal (particularly copper) pole/wire/etc. and you heat one end, and cool the other end, what does the temperature gradient look like? Is it linear? Is it quadratic? What is it based on?

If you can tell me what the name of this phenomenon is called so I can look it up myself some more on google, that'd be wonderful.

  • Non-hazardous liquids (at room temp) for experiment?

I'm looking for some element/substance/etc. (hopefully not horribly expensive) that is a liquid at room temperature but has a melting/freezing point from -210C to 0C (between that of liquid nitrogen and water). The problem seems to be that most of what I find is hazardous or incredibly flammable.

Any suggestions for substances or for search methods? I've been trying an exhaustive method on google as of late. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • Polite way to end a religious discussion?

What is a polite way to tell someone essentially that you "agree to disagree" when it comes to religion?

I've tried to end discussions with "Yeah that's interesting but I don't really believe that..." and the person continues to explain his reasoning.

I've been trying to figure out any secular reason for banning gay marriage and I can't figure it out. If we have separation of church and state, why is the government still trying to ban gay marriage?

  • Will MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) increase or decrease when....?

Given two D-flip flops (output of first is input of second) with a single clock signal to both (Synchronizer?), we need to first calculate the MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure), then say whether it will increase under several conditions. MY QUESTION(S)!

    MAIN QUESTION:

    1) Is the MTBF calculated for each individual flip flop? Or the synchronizer as a whole?

    OTHER QUESTIONS:

    2) Given a table with different variables for the equation we're using (Tau, T-o, and t-res if it matters), it says for devices in the 74HCxx family. Would I double the equation to find MTBF? It appears the 74HCxx would only take into account a single flip flop, or am I mistaken here?

    3) How will the MTBF change if we change the second flip flop to a 74F74? Do you add the MTBF of the second flip flop to that of a first? Again, goes back to whether it's calculated for each flip flop or as a whole.

Thank you very much in advance for all help!

  • Minimum number of D Flip Flops needed?

I'm given a state machine (6 states), 5 outputs, and 8 inputs. Now I have to answer "what is the minimum number of D flip flops needed to implement the machine and why?"

Is there a technique to this? Here's all I've come up with: I know the answer for counters, but do state machines function similarly? 1 flip flop for every 2 states? Or 1 flip flop per state? Or perhaps zero are required?

    Thank you for any help!

  • Should I transfer colleges?

I am a first year (freshman, but sophomore credit-wise) attending a private catholic college and am considering going to the U of M

    Reasons I should:

I am not catholic and the catholic presence here is much more than I'd imagined, makes me feel rather isolated and alone a lot of times. (to the point that one of my classes once opened with prayer and I am forced to take several catholic specific classes)

So far I dislike the professors of my area of study (good people, but don't connect with them at all learning-wise) and have had 3 out of the maybe 8 that work here.

I'm on a suitcase campus currently

Many friends go to the U of M and expecting more to transfer there in the next few years

More options for food / clubs / meeting people on the U of M campus

U of M has 5 years bachelor's / master's plan while my school only says it'll be here soon (meaning yes or no)

    Reasons not to:

I'm already here and will be hard to re-integrate into a new "community"

Larger class sizes (although I typically do learn well lecture-style)

    Possibility of credits not transferring

Possibility that my issue with classes will be there as well

More expensive (with my current scholarships) to go to the U

I'm not sure if I want to stay with electrical engineering, but I would probably have to sign up for the 5 year plan once I got to the U of M for graduating with a masters in around 5 years.

    Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.

  • Personality problem that I can't identify?

I have an issue which is that I'll be in a good mood, having fun with friends, and then one person (it may not even be someone I'm close to) will insult me or be a jerk to me in some way and it will totally bring down my mood. I'm not sure why as logically, it shouldn't bug me, but it does. Is there anything I can do to work on this problem? Or is there at least a name for this type of behavior that I can look up some strategies to defeat this kind of thinking? Thanks!
