  • Confused at when to apply right of way rules at a 4-way stop?

My friend and I are having a little debate since apparently I screwed up at a 4-way stop.

Scenario: We're part of a long line of cars getting off the highway. Most people are just doing rolling stops since we're the only cars entering the 4-way stop. Until it's getting close to my turn.

As I'm pulling up to the intersection a car on my left pulls up and comes to a complete stop first, a pick-up across from me with his left-turn signal pulls up second, I pull up and stop third. The car on my left stopped first and should go first, which he did... that made sense to me. As he's going through a car on the right pulls up and stops.

Everyone sort of hesitated for a moment, but eventually the pick-up turned left. Now I figured it was my turn next since I've now been waiting the longest, and pulled up well before the car on my right... but she went first instead, and I nearly hit her for it.

My friend thinks I screwed up twice; that I should have gone before the left-turning truck or after the car on my right (right of way rules). I think I should have gone before the car on my right since I had been at the intersection for about 20 seconds and she basically just did a rolling stop (first to arrive, first to go).

What should I have done here according to the rule book?

  • 2014 cars with a head"rest" as opposed to "restraint"?

So it seems that new rules were put into place in 2009 for "head restraints" in cars to help prevent whiplash injuries.

Unfortunatey several vehicles I have test driven don't conform well with my head; that is they are literally pushing my head forward in my natural driving position. Not sure if it's my weight, body type, or driving posture, but several cars I have test-driven have had this issue... so much so that in the Civic after two hours of driving I was experiencing stiffness in my neck and some numbness where my neck meets my shoulder.

I'm wondering firstly if anyone else is having the problem, also I'm wondering if anyone has found a 2014 model where the head"rest" is still an actual rest as opposed to [what I concieve as] a torture device.

  • Plastic Container with a water tray thing?

I used to own some plastic containers, I think they were Glad... but not entirely sure. Each container had 3-parts, the container, lid, and some sort of tray that would be placed at the bottom of the container. I could put blueberries, grapes, etc. and any excess water would drain down below the tray and the fruits would be kept safely above the water and not become all soggy.

I thought it was quite brilliant, actually. Unfortunately, I lost these containers when I moved and have not been able to find them anywhere. Were they discontinued for some reason?

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about?

  • High Class/Snooty Conversations?

I'm writing a short story for a class and I'm trying to set up some sort of scene like a dinner party, involving characters that would be stereotypical groomed from birth upper class formal (snooty).

At dinner, what would said characters talk about? How would they go about speaking? Are there any good references, guides, or books I can use for examples? I already have "Great Expectations" as a starting point, but unsure of where else to look.

I'm particularly interested in how they would cleverly insult an outsider without the outsider even catching on.

    Thanks!

  • Where can I find a 14" long screwdriver, no thicker than 4mm?

Tried every hardware/electronics shop in town. Hunted online for hours. Seems to be quite specialized, but the company that made the radio I need it for has since gone out of business.

  • Wikipedia 7 clicks to Hitler?

Various rules on the game, most will say 5, others put rules like no countries; etc.

My friend has challenged me that it is impossible to find an article with 7 clicks or more. So I'm trying to find an article where it is impossible to reach Hitler in 7 clicks or less... anyone know?

  • How to step in on bullying as an adult?

I came home from work today and some kids were walking through the parking lot, kicking and spitting on a backpack. Well, didn't we all just hate school.

Until I spotted the owner of the backpack, not part of the group as I had originally assumed, and he was devastated obviously not enjoying the fact that his backpack was being trashed. By this time, the laughing kids were already around the corner, and the owner was scooping up his backpack off the road.

Now I'm left feeling horrible, wondering what, if anything, I could have done? Obviously I can't grab them, shouting vulgar words would probably get me laughed at, and god forbid if someone saw me doing that without knowing the whole story I'm putting myself at risk.

What would you have done and why?

  • Would you buy a car for "vanity"?

For example, I currently own a used Buick LaCrosse, which isn't really fitting for a 25 yo male. I've been considering something like a Civic or Impreza... but realistically it's for no other reason than appearances.

Would you do the same, and why?

  • "Official Match Ball" to be used or collected?

I have a 2010 "Official Match Ball of the 2010 FIFA World Cup", obviously not used in the real match but I suppose it's the same kind that was used. I won it in a raffle a while ago, and I've no idea what I'm supposed to do with it. On various websites I see the things selling for anywhere between $75 and $140.

Is this something that I'm supposed to keep in plastic on a shelf, or something that's intended to be played with? Since I don't play the sport I was thinking of donating it to a local kid's team or school. Any thoughts?

  • What's the purpose of 4x4 low if you're stuck?

So I got my mom's 2008 Jeep Liberty stuck in the snow. While trying to get it out, we noticed that the front right wheel and rear left wheel would spin when I pressed the gas, but the front left and rear right had little, if any power at all. Now the vehicle kept trying to lurch forward since the non-spinning wheels had really firm traction and did not spin at all, but the more gas I gave the faster the other two wheels spin and we just couldn't get out.

This doesn't really make sense to me. Isn't the purpose of 4x4 low, or even 4x4 high for that matter, to lock the differential and make all wheels rotate equally?

  • Is there a program that can track down an IP address from a PC game?

There's a cheater that plays multiple accounts in online play. I was hoping to track his IP address so that I can tell if it's the same guy no matter what online screen name he uses.

  • Computer crashes when running CDs but not DVDs?

Any time I run a regular CD I get a complete lockup and have to pull the battery out to shut-down. But, DVDs (be it a movie or DVD-game) seem to run perfectly fine. Any ideas?

  • New Transmission vs Overhauled Transmission?

Looking for opinions/advice. Automatic Transmission seriously screwing up on my car (not shifting out of second, lots of slipping). The shop is pulling it out right now... so I've a few hours to decide.

Just off of warranty, 5 year old car. Two options:

    A) New Transmission. $4290 (taxes in). 3 year/160,000km warranty on the tranny.

    B) Overhaul the current transmission. $3350 (taxes in) MINIMUM. May get higher depending on what needs to be fixed. 1 year/20,000km warranty on the tranny.

  • Is it safe to store tires indoors?

I live in a small apartment, and I'm wondering if it is safe to store my winter tires inside (like a closet, or perhaps in a corner somewhere).

I'm concerned about whether or not there are fumes, chemicals, or whatnot that I should be concerned of if I were to store them inside.

(the alternative would be paying a storage company of some sort)

    Thanks in Advance.

  • Upgrading RAM, what does "PC3-8500s" and "2Rx8" mean?

Currently my laptop uses two 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500s-07-10-F2 sticks of DDR3 RAM.

Would I be safe to assume that the "Memory Speed" is PC8500 and the "Memory Speed Mhz" is 1066Mhz... or am I looking at this wrong?

Also; the PC10666 / 1333Mhz sticks are slightly cheaper than the PC8500 / 1066Mhz... not sure why... would I suffer compatibility problems going from 1066 to 1333?

Just to add to the confusion... the 1066Mhz sticks have a CAS of 7-7-7-20 vs the 1333Mhz sticks have a CAS of 9-9-9-24... Any ideas which is better?

    I'm confused... uhg...

  • Will I need a complete transmission replacement?

The RPM tends to fluctuate when at highway speed, it will jump up and down every few seconds by 100 RPM when on the cruise control, 200-300 RPM when I handle the gas myself.

There have been repeat occasions when sitting at a light to turn left, I press the gas to go only to have the car shudder and not move for 2-3 seconds until it finally goes.

Have twice received the "Hot Transmission Fluid" warning.

When parking on any sort of slant (not talking hill, just slant) the shifter will be stuck in park and I have to really muscle it to get into drive.

Recently the car seems not to want to go to fourth gear. It runs through the others fine, but won't go to that last gear which really hampers my fuel mileage...

  • Do you ever feel guilty or bad for going on vacation?

I just got back from a trip and feel horrible; totally out of the loop, guilty for leaving, and not my usual productive self. Now I feel like a criminal asking for 1 day away from the office for a brief business trip.

Anyone else feel the same way about vacations?

  • How to manipulate PDF file sizes?

I'm becoming terribly frustrated. There's no pictures, just text and tables.

The Word X file is 20.2kb, when I save as a PDF it jumps to 334kb. I copied the text, pasted it into word (removes the tables, font sizes, tabs, etc.) and the size drops to 122kb. All I do is change the text from Calibri to Arial and PDF file size increases to 164kb. I pass it off to a friend who has Acrobat at his office, he shrinks the file down to 19.4kb as a PDF.

On screen and on paper the 19.4kb is exactly the same as the 334kb file, any quality differences are imperceptible to the naked eye (for curiosity I got a magnifying glass and noticed a slight difference, but that could be the printer...).

For online job applications the vast majority of applications allow a maximum resume file size of 100kb. How can I get all my PDFs under that size without having to go through my friend every time I hand out a new resume? (it needs to change for each job application)

  • Heavy vs Light car in the snow... Pulling towards the slush?

Getting off the highway today my two right wheels went into some slushy snow on the side, and suddenly my car started pulling in that direction and I had to aggressively counter-steer to maintain control.

This seems odd to me, my previous car never did that. My previous car was a compact 4-cyl Toyota and now I drive a mid/full-sized 6-cyl Buick. Shouldn't the larger car have more momentum and be less affected by snow?

  • What to look for in a Subaru?

Unfortunately I've been forced into the car market (as of this morning my current car is beyond repair...).

If I were to buy a Subaru, what should I look for, what should I be concerned about, and what kind of questions should I ask specific to the Subaru brand?

(I may cash purchase a used, or finance a new... I haven't decided yet)
