im a regular guy from a regular town. I think a lot. I'm 19 years old and a sophomore in college. I've been through a lot, but haven't been through a lot more. I play 4 instruments, am a DJ, run a charity organization and a publication, and work out 3-5 days a week... and I do too much for my own good. But I love it : ) I usually put a lot of thought into my answers, and do the best i can to offer you the best advice i can think of. I am really interested in helping people out, so if you have any follow ups, or questions, or even wish to just update me on how your situation is, I would LOVE IT. Shoot me an email, any time. I'd love to hear about anything you have to tell me = )

  • High Frequency Telephone Recording Background Noise?

I guess the title explains it - I am trying to record from a telephone using a generic RadioShack telephone recording control. However, whenever I record there is a very loud high frequency whine behind it the entire time. I'm not exactly sure why - everything is connected as in the instructions, and there is nothing that would interfere with the signal nearby.

Can anyone help me out with this one? I'm just not sure what is producing this sound or how to get rid of it...

  • Electric field inside closed circuit?

I'm doing a lab for physics where we have a positive and negative terminal pinned onto carbon paper, and we use voltmeter probes to test the charge in various situations, and measure equipotential lines and force lines.

You can see a lab almost identical to it here: http://www2.truman.edu/~edis/courses/100/lab9.pdf

In one situation, we have the positive terminal on a silver conducting line drawn onto the paper. The line forms a closed shape. The other terminal is outside the shape. When we tested it, the voltage was varying outside the shape, but constant inside of the shape. For the lab, we need to explain why this is the case, but we are stumped... does anyone know why?

Since it is 2 dimensional, apparently we cannot use Gauss' Law

    Thanks!

  • Questions on Loudspeakers and Amps?

Ok, so I just asked a question about this, and got great and very helpful answers. The context is that I am a DJ looking for nice speakers. Thanks so much! I wasn't expecting anyone to know. What I asked was:

    1. What's the difference in volume output between 400 watt and 600 watt speakers? Apparently it's minimal - one or two decibels. My follow up question to this is what actually makes the difference in terms of sound output? If a 200 watt power difference between speakers is minimal, why not get 200 watt speakers? Or even 100 watt? They are a lot less expensive, and according to answers I got before, would have a similar output.

    2. What's the difference between sensitivities of speakers (example, would a sensitivity difference of 10 between two speakers matter in terms of sound output)? The answer to this was again that it would hardly be a difference - less than one decibel. In this case, *what statistic of the speakers can I actually look at to determine their volume output?* Does the physical size of the drivers or the cabinets matter? How can I know how loud a speaker will go?

    3. If I drive an amp close to its full continuous power fairly regularly, will it be blown, or is this ok? The answer was that distortion greatly increases as you approach the amp's max that it can handle, so I will know when this happens and be able to decrease the volume. Sounds awesome. Any more input on this would be appreciated as well.

Other interesting things that people said included that 400 watt speakers should be able to "cover anything short of an airplane hangar", and that more sets of less powerful speakers are better than once set of more powerful speakers - are these statements definitely true?

And one more question - does the age of a speaker or amp matter, or is it only the actual usage that matters? For example, if I were looking at a component that was, lets say, 5 years old but used heavily by a gigging DJ, and a component that was 10 or more years old, but used lightly by a kid in his living room. Would the 10 year old one still die faster, just because it was older?

Thank you so much again, you guys are the absolute BEST!!

  • Questions on Loudspeaker Power?

How can you know how powerful your speakers need to be to cover a specific venue size? I'm a DJ and am now looking at speakers between 400 watts and 600 watts. How big is the difference between these? Are the 600s significantly more powerful, or is it not a big difference? It's very important that I have enough power to cover sizable venues as a DJ, and I want to make sure I'm never short on volume.

Also, I know sensitivity is a big factor. Between 400 and 600 watts, will a difference in sensitivity matter, for example, if the 600 watt one had, let's say, 95 sensitivity, and the 400 watt one had 101? How do watts compare to sensitivity in terms of judging the volume output of a speaker?

Finally, if you used an amp that had a lower continuous power rating than your speakers, and drove it at or near its max continuous power rating, would this be bad for the amp? I know the speakers would be fine, because they would have lots of headroom, but I'm worried about the amp. For example, the 600 watt speakers I'm looking at come with a 385 watt amp. To even make good use of the speakers, I'd be driving this amp pretty close to its max regularly. Is this ok, or will the amp just die, and I should look into a higher powered one?

I hope someone can answer these really technical questions - if anyone actually knows the answer to these, they would be my hero forever!

  • Men's Fashion Stores?

So I've been looking for good stores with styles that look crisp and modern and that I like, and so far the only stores that really have fit my criteria have been

    1. American Eagle

    2. Express

    3. Guess

However, this is a pretty limited selection, and also guess is reeeally expensive - does anyone know of any similar stores that aren't insanely expensive and have the same type of sharp modern mens style?

    Thanks so much!

PS Not looking for actual formal wear, I'm a college student, so I wouldnt wear like a suit, tie, khakis, a vest etc. on a daily basis. Looking for more like casual-formal mix

  • one on one vs. group behavior... please help me!!?

My girlfriend often says that i act different when im just with her than when im with her and other people. But I haven't noticed doing anything different - obviously I dont like make out with her in public and im not like all over her, and same vice versa, but I feel like thats totally normal.... is it not?

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the psychology and/or sociology associated with one on one interactions vs. group behavior - or where to find info on it.

I feel like anything different I do isn't out of the ordinary - I mean, obviously i cant put all my attention on her when im in a group - that wouldnt be normal, and i wouldnt be part of the group. But I dont ignore her, I treat her like my girlfriend - I sit or stand close to her, I talk to her, I pay more attention to her than others (but not all), and I'll hold her hand in public, cuddle with her, etc.

I'm just wondering if I'm doing something weird unconsciously or whether she is paranoid...

  • taking initiative *best answer*?

ok guys heres my question. When i refer to "taking an initiative" i mean sexually, like kissing them or touching them, etc. - like initiating some kind of sexual activity from making out to sex or in between.

So - personally i hate taking the initiative myself (im a guy) because i always feel like its sketchy, and am not sure whether the girl wants it or not, and i wouldn't want to go too far without them wanting it. I also sort of feel like its one of those aggressive sexual predator guy things, and guys are stereotypically labeled as wanting sex all the time and girls dont. Also it may seem like you are just looking for pleasure and dont actually care about the girl, and thats so far from true at least for me. So i dont want to seem like overbearing or anything.

So i was wondering, is this the right thing, to hold off a little, or do girls like it when guys make a move? I LOVE it when she makes a move on me. I'm just looking for general opinions here i guess.

  • how to cheer a girl up? *best answer guaranteed*?

Please read the whole question and answer thoughtfully, i will pick a best answer - promise = )

Sometimes my girlfriend is not happy, and i really love making her happy, and consider it my duty, even, because I care about her and dont want her to be sad. But sometimes im stumped as to how to cheer her up.

Usually when shes unhappy, shes not talkative, doesn't respond much, and is kind of bitter and sarcastic, and a little mean to the things i say. I know she doesn't mean it, and its only temporary, but for girls, and for guys, do you know any ways to counter this and cheer a girl up?

    -------------------------------------

IM MOSTLY LOOKING FOR WAYS THAT ARE POSSIBLE WHEN YOUR NOT WITH HER - like over the phone, or online, or something. Usually i can make her happy when were together.

I know its different for everyone, but even any examples for specific people would help, and any general things that cheer people up. I just don't want an answer like "its different for everyone"

    thx!
