  • Affraid of becoming like father?

Hello everyone, to start, my parents are divorced. My father used to verbally and physically assault my mother, he could be really dominating her sometimes and even got her into the hospital. I stopped living with him since I was 11 and broke all contact at the age of 13. I'm not stupid either, I know I'm probably affected by him. So here is the problem, I have a girlfriend right now, I never feel the need to be so aggressive to her (neither was my father in the beginning). Are there any real chances of me turning out the same way as he did? According to my mother I used to be really aggressive too but it all got under control and my youth turned out way different than his (big interest in studies, no need for aggression, non alcoholic etc...). Or is my personality already set at the age of 11?

  • Spending too much attention on my girlfriend?

I have been dating with my girlfriend for around 2 weeks now, I really love and care about her and it looks like we have known each other for a long time. But we are currently in a long distance relationship due to the (of course) distance, when we were together we literally spent every second together. But I feel like I am spending too much attention on her, I text her the entire day and check every minute for a reply (it can take up to a couple of hours), am I being too overly attached? I already asked her twice and she says I am not, I really enjoy talking to her and being with her (that's all I want to do at the moment, she's constantly on my mind), she says she likes the attention, I am not sure about that. Should I back off or keep it this way?

  • Learn Physics on my own?

    Hey everybody!

Has someone here been able to learn physics/particle physics... on his own? I really would like to study it on a university later on, but my school is going slow as hell on all the subjects and I feel like I'm getting nowhere without taking action. So has anyone got any good sites, books...?

    Greets,

  • Electron configuration issue?

Hi everyone, in my chemistry class at school we learned that the first 2 electrons in the K shell always orbit in pairs, and all the other electrons following too, always in pairs of 2.

Can anyone explain me why this happens please?

  • Photons and orbits and stuff?

Hi, I've got 2 little questions:

    - Can an emitted photon from one orbit interact with an orbit from another atom at another level?

    - Why does an electron move up when it has absorbed a photon? Does its size change? And what happens to that photon?

  • What's Euclid's 'mod' thingy?

I see this 'mod' function appearing a lot in some equations and I don't know what it stands for and is used for, as far as I could get I discovered it was made by Euclid but that's all. Any help is appreciated!

  • How come things can move?

Is there like some kind of sub-partical explanation, how come if I hit an apple it will move for a while? Yes I know Newton's laws and stuff like that, but how can they maintain that force until it's stopped? What in the object itself is pushing it away?

  • Find stressed syllables in English?

Hi, for my English test tomorrow I'm required to find the stressed syllables in some words, as I have problems finding them, do you know any tricks to find them? I don't have any problems with pronouncing them right but it's just 'necessary' as the school says.

  • Question about atoms?

Hi, I was wondering about some things which my teacher didn't know.

If you like do electrolysis, you get H2O --> H2 + O2, but why is it O2? Didn't it start with O at the first place?

  • Biology: manipulating cells?

I saw a documentary on National Geographic about "biohackers", as I found this very interesting and have a couple of questions (google tells me like nothing):

    - Is it possible to manipulate and build our own cells without expensive equipment etc.?

    - Is it legal to do it?

    - What material/knowledge is needed for it? (maybe some books, sites?)

  • Do or don't girls prefer intelligence?

Is it just a myth and is everything based on the looks, or is it true? Maybe they prefer strong guys but think like they want intelligent ones so they can fool their own brains and think they are smart?

  • Why do girls still prefer douchebags?

I was just wondering about this, isn't it better for evolution to pick out smart and intelligent guys? Like those "douchebags" don't get a good job, nobody likes them, etc... The same for guys, why do we prefer good-looking girls instead of smart? It would benefit our future children and make a higher chance for a better and more succesfull life?

  • What should I do right now?

I met this girl a time ago (but she lives too far from me to visit) and we used to skype a lot, she hangs out with almost only guys all the time and looks kinda like a slut to other people, but she's so innocent when I talk to her! The contact is a bit dying away and I don't know if out would be better to keep talking or just stop the contact (because it kinda hurts a bit, I like her but I'm not sure of her, we were like really close)So, what should I do?
