  • Why do most recommended MIT math books have low Amazon ratings?

I'm trying to put together a self-study course to mimic the MIT undergraduate math program. They typically list the textbooks on their site for each course, each of which is almost always at least $200. When I check the ratings on Amazon, they're usually fairly haphazard, leaning toward the negative. Many of them are from MIT students too. Common complaints are that they're badly worded, contain errors, abstruse, etc.

I also notice that many of them are written by MIT staff...

So, they're written by MIT staff, recommended by MIT staff and happen to be very expensive. Have I answered my own question?

  • What does "ja wohl" do in this German sentence?

I just found this German sentence:

"Ich muss es ja wohl tun."

It means, I think, "I must do it." So it could have said, "Ich muss es tun."

So what is the "ja wohl" for?

I'm guessing it says something like "indeed". If so, why "ja wohl" and not just "wohl"?

  • Which of these laptop graphics cards is the best?

I'm choosing a laptop based on the cpu and the graphics card. So I'm getting your opinions on which is the best graphics card out of these:

    AMD 6520G

    Intel HD 3000

    Intel HD 4000

    ATI Radeon HD 7520G

    AMD Radeon HD 7420G

    AMD Radeon 7340 discrete-class

    AMD Radeon HD 7340M

    Intel UMA

AMD Radeon HD 7420G discrete class

They're all pretty low-end. But which would you choose?

  • Is it possible to get college credit through a test without attending?

I've been self-studying mathematics for years and I have no interest in attending college. However, I wish there was some way I could obtain accreditation to certify my mathematical competency. Is there somewhere I can go, and possibly pay a fee, to take a test and receive credit?

  • What does this German sentence mean?

  • Should tries be worth more?

The effort to score with a try seems disproportionate to the number of points awarded to it. The aim of the game really seems to be, "let's pass and ruck until the other team messes up and we'll score by penalties."

But even if tries were worth more, the situation would remain the same. Perhaps there should be less penalties. I don't see that ever happening, but it would be a solution.

I'm just looking for the opinion of others on this.

  • What can a player do when opposition has past try line? (RUGBY LEAGUE)?

I know that in rugby, you have to touch the ball to the ground on or past the try line. Let's say a member of the opposition has past the try line but hasn't yet touched the ball to the ground. Is there anything that can be done?

  • Is this German sentence correct?

I found this sentence in a book and I'm not sure about it:

"Und neben ihr liegen vier kleine Katzen."

I would have thought it should be either

"Und neben ihr lag vier kleine Katzen", or

"Und neben ihr sind vier kleine Katzen."

    Why is it "liegen"?

  • What can I do with a bunch of 2gb ram chips?

I work in a place that throws this stuff out all the time. It seems wrong.

So let's say I have 50 2gb ram chips. What's the most useful thing I could do with them? Is there a motherboard out there that will hold them all? Then maybe I could run a huge ramdisk on them. That's the only thing I could think of.

Surely, there must be a use for them, other than running a very simple desktop.

  • How long should Calc 2 and 3 take to cover?

Tonight I made a list of all the topics I have to cover to finish calc 2, calc 3, DE and linear algebra. There were about 250 topics. If I spend a week on each of these, I'll be done in 5 years. That's insane. I'm 31 now, I could be dead by the time I'm done. Who knows.

I study on my own; I don't attend classes. How long should/could it take to cover calc 2 and 3 thoroughly? How long do colleges usually dedicate to it?

And how can I deal with the anxiety of facing an enormous list of stuff like this?

  • Can anyone recommend a crawler and a scraper?

I need to get stats off a website and doing it manually is out of the question. I know C but I'm reading that Python is more appropriate for scraping. For crawling, I've no idea.

If someone could point me to a tutorial, or if there are free tools around I would like links to that.

  • Why do names of planets in Star Trek nearly always have the number 4 in them?

In Star Trek TNG, they're always talking about planets with the number 4 in their names. What's that about? For example, Alpha Laputa IV, Cardassia IV, Sirius IV, Torga IV, Adelphous IV, Algeron IV, Altair IV, Alture IV, Althos IV, Antos IV, Archanis IV, Archer IV, Arcturus IV, Atifs IV, Atrea IV...

...and those are just some of the 'A's.

There are planets with II and III in them too, but mostly 4s. Any reason for this, or did the writers just think <planet> iV sounded cool?

  • Where can I find a switch attached to a light sensor for indoor lights?

I didn't think this would be that hard to find, but Google just shows me motion sensors, and diagrams for circuits that have their own led lights attached.

I want my indoor lights to come on when the light levels reach a given level inside.

Is there a device I can buy to do this?
