Do roofers ever work without harnesses?
My buddy does some roofing on the side and says that roofers don't use harnesses unless the pitch of the roof is very steep, or if the roof is wet. I told him that he is an idiot, but he disagrees. Who is right?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs9 years agoCan I turn down my insurance company's attempt to total my car on a comp claim?
My 1997 Jetta just got some tornado damage... all cosmetic surface damage. I've recently replaced the clutch, chains, and A/C compressor, and I love this car, and I'm sort of nervous that they're going to total it. I filed a comp claim today, and the estimate came out to $1200 (roughly 65% of the "threshold" for total loss according to the body shop). The KBB on the car is $3100.
I was surprised to hear from my insurance company after they got the estimate, telling me that they may consider it a total loss, and will send out an inspector to check out the car. If they do try and tell me its totaled, can I just tell them to go away, and I'll keep it/fix it myself? I own the car outright, no bank loans or anything. I'd rather cancel the claim and walk away with nothing, keeping my tornado beaten, mechanically near-perfect car.
I also don't want to deal with having them total it and then buying it back, with a salvage title. Huge pain in the ***, and I'd have to get it re-inspected.
5 AnswersInsurance & Registration9 years agoFridge fan is blowing, but compressor not kicking on?
Noticed today that the drinks in the fridge aren't as cold as they should be. About halfway between room temp and "fridge cold." The freezer seems to be okay.
I haven't heard the compressor kick on in a while, but the fan is still running. I took the panel behind the fridge off and vacuumed everything out really well, it was pretty dusty.
Any thoughts?
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs9 years agoAre taxes paid at settlement of home purchase tax deductible?
Bought my first house in August this year. Paid a $1280 property tax bill via escrow in November, and got a form 1098 from the bank stating that I paid that amount.
However, my hud-1 shows that at settlement, there was an adjustment for taxes paid by seller in advance, of about $1150. Part of me thinks the seller is claiming that amount as a tax deduction, since he actually paid the tax, but another part of me thinks, "I paid the seller that amount, I should get the tax deduction." Can anyone help? The weird part is that the hud-1 shows that the prepaid taxes that they're adjusting for cover the period 8/1/11 - 12/1/11. Aren't property taxes paid in arrears? Why would he have prepaid taxes?
1 AnswerUnited States9 years agoNo power to all rooms on breaker, but breaker not flipped. WTH?
I flipped my master bath light on this morning, and heard a click, then no power. Lost all power to my bedroom and bathroom. The rest of the upstairs works. There's also a smoke detector that is beeping now because it is running on it's drained 9v rather than electric power.
So I go into the basement and find a breaker labeled "MBR&2nd Flr Smoke Det." I checked the other 2nd Flr breaker and it successfully turned on and off power to the 2nd bathroom and other 2 bedrooms (so I verified that one is working fine).
The 'problem breaker' however, was not flipped. I put my 3 year old on the phone while I was in the basement flipping the breaker back and forth, and he says "it's on!" So I run upstairs, but the power had already cut back off (and the ceiling fan was spinning like it actually had turned on for a couple of seconds).
No idea where to start looking for the problem. I am a weekend warrior do-it-yourselfer, and have changed light switches and ran new outlets in the past, so I just really need to know where to start on this one.
6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs9 years agoSharp onion bathroom smell... stings nostrils?
Our apartment bathroom (ground level) usually smells horrible. We keep it VERY clean, and there is no visible mold or mildew anywhere, not even the shower or washer/dryer.
The smell actually stings my nostrils sometimes (when it's at it's worst). It doesn't smell musty or like sewage either. It's best described as an onion-like smell. The maintenance people came over and of course said they couldn't smell it. They cleaned our drains for us and that didn't change a thing.
We can't pinpoint where it's emanating from, but it doesn't seem like the drains. It actually smells like it might be under the sink, but nothing is visible.
Really starting to hate it and we have a 2 year old in the apartment. Does anyone know what this could be?

2 AnswersBaseball1 decade agoWhat rate should I laugh at for an auto loan?
I have all my accounts in good standing (about 5 years since I got my first bit of credit), never had a late payment. Had a small personal loan that I paid of, and I have 4 credit cards open with a total balance of over 10k.
If the bank tries to offer me a 10% loan, is that way too high? Is 6 or 7% what I should be aiming for?
I don't know what would be a rip off, I don't want to get taken advantage of.
Oh and I just got my VantageScore, its 720.
5 AnswersCredit1 decade agoI gave my 2 week old baby adult saline, is this bad?!?
I went to Target to get the baby saline and they didn't have it, so I asked the pharmacist, and she says "oh yea the adult kind is the same, just in a different bottle." So my wife and I gave him a couple drops in each nostril, and now we're reading online that its a lot stronger than the baby dose.
He's crying intermittently, but seems okay. Any reason for alarm?
9 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoHow do you think a company like Black and Decker can improve sales, with the poor housing market?
I have a project for business strategy and I need to survey people for ideas. I have several, but want to see if other people could come up with something new.
Black and Decker makes tools and fasteners, and are currently struggling since the construction market is struggling.
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoDo you have to disclose damage to CarMax when selling them your car?
I just saw on their website you have to sign a Damage Disclosure Statement. Anybody know what that is?
I have a beat up car that I was planning on "sprucing up" and trying to get as much as I could out of them.
2 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoWhat is a good way to style my hair, straight and thick?
I have very thick, very straight hair. I've been buzzing it with a 1/8 guard for about 2 years. I'd love to have hair again but I don't have any idea how I'd do it, just because its so straight, if I let it grow long it looks like a helmet, and I don't like to spike it up.
