Computer monitor eye strain?
Background: I have a problem with the muscles in my eyes. An eye will wander if the muscles get fatigued. I do eye pushups to help this condition. I get eye strain when using a computer. It's not the typical eye strain that people talk about and is not cured by taking breaks, blinking, adjusting brightness and glare, etc. It's caused by barely perceived "flicker" on the screen.
My 23" LCD monitor has a default "refresh" setting of 60hz. At this setting I can barely look at the screen because I can "see" flicker (but others don't see it). I reset my refresh to 75hz and this helps, but I still get fatigue quickly. The way my computer works is that at the highest screen resolution setting (1680x1050) the refresh can only be set to 60hz. I currently have it at 1152x854 @75hz This is the highest setting I can get for the better refresh but this is not ideal because everything is stretched horizontally.
Here's my question: :
I'm looking for either more optimal computer/monitor settings to alleviate the eye strain, or a suggestion for a better monitor that allows the highest refresh AND resolution setting to allow comfortable use of the computer. Has anyone with a similar eye muscle problem found a solution?
2 AnswersOptical1 decade agoHow do you evaluate telescope or binocular optics?
Other than price and brand, how do you tell a good quality set of binoculars (or telescope) from bad quality? I'm speaking in terms of optical quality. Without allowing emotion or ego in to your answer, how can I really test the difference between Chinese (Leapers, Tasco, etc) and Japanese or German (or whereever else) binoculars and telescopes?
2 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoIs it possible to strengthen your eyes?
By "strengthen" I mean improve blurry vision.
Assuming there is no eye injury or other condition making it more difficult for the average person, are there any exercises a person can do to improve eyesight?

As an American Caucasian I can't tell by looks if a person is from Canada or America, but I can usually recognize a difference in someone from the UK or Europe by their facial features. Is the same true for people from Asian countries?
1 AnswerOther - Cultures & Groups1 decade agoCan the Toyota Tercel driver's seat go back any further?
I have a 1992 Tercel 2 door coupe and I need it to fit a 6 foot 1 driver. The driver's seat doesn't go back far enough so apparently knees are hitting the steering wheel. Is there a way to make it go back further, either an accessory kit that extends the rails or some other mount adjustment?
4 AnswersToyota1 decade agoWhy do diesel truck drivers leave their engines idling for long periods?
Is there a legitimate reason why diesel trucks (Not semi tractor trailers) you know the box truck, tow truck, even large work truck, to leave the engine idling when the driver exits the cab? I don't mean in cases where the lights are on for a long time or where the driver is using the AC/heater while parked, I mean I see trucks sitting unoccupied idling for long periods of time.
If there is a legitimate reason for not turning off the diesel engine what is it?

Will a 12 gage rifled shotgun slug (one ounce through an 18" barrel) kill a wild pig/boar? I'm talking a pig up to 400 pounds and closer than 50 yards.

After reading the article today about which phones emit the most radiation, all I can find are warnings about radiation exposure to your head. What about when it's not in use? I keep my phone in my pocket, am I exposing myself to the same (possibly harmful) radiation?
My LG Rumor emits some of the highest levels of radiation according to this article: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/telecom/2...

Why is it so hard to find out if a game is multi-player only or has single player maps? It's almost never on the box or on the web site.
Does Battlefield 2142 have single player maps to battle with bots?

47 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoNikon D60 image quality setting, can it be set higher than 72dpi?
I just got the camera and notice that I can adjust the file size but not the image resolution. On my little Canon Elph I was able to have images at 300 dpi for great resolution and clarity. Is it true that I can only choose how large the photograph is in physical size and can not change the image resolution quality?

22 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoCan I cancel my car insurance right after an accident?
Long story short, a relative totaled her car rear-ending another vehicle. She had the bare minimum liability insurance through Geico which should be sufficient because the car she hit was barely damaged (no medical injuries either).
Question: Once the other party she hit files the claim can she cancel her auto policy? No reason to keep paying for insurance on a car that will never be driven again. I am assuming as long as she was insured on the date of the incident, all expenses (within the scope of her coverage limitations) stemming from that incident will be covered, even if more claims come up later.
BTW her car is totaled because it's a very old Volvo that will be too expensive to repair. All it needs is a front panel, hood, and radiator but she won't have the money to do the repair.
2 AnswersInsurance & Registration1 decade agoNeed Norwegian poem translated?
This is a poem on a postcard from early 1900's:
Jarlsberg.
The picture on the card is a painting of a young man plowing a field.
2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhat is your pet peeve about people?
Mine is when people use an expression incorrectly, as in when people say "I could care less". It's supposed to be "I couldn't care less". Do you think people like to make themselves sound like idiots on purpose?
OK that's two questions, sorry. How about it, what's your pet peeve?
19 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoWhy do people ask questions here instead of using a search engine?
As I look through the questions posted here about 75% of them could be solved by a simple web search. Why do you think people ask questions here instead? Do most people not understand how to use a search engine? Or do they not really need an instant answer, preferring to read a list of mostly wrong replies over the course of a week until hopefully that one person actually gives them a correct and helpful answer?
