How to Reduce Glare in Antique Varnished Oil Painting?

I have an antique oil on canvas painting with a varnished surface that produces a lot of glare. This makes it difficult to see the painting unless you are in very dim light or standing at just the right angle.

Is there anything I can do or apply to the painting to reduce the shine?

Photo attached to show an example of what the painting looks like from most angles hanging on the wall.

Growth Found on a Beer Bottle Cap. What is it?

The pictured substance was found growing out of a beer bottle cap. It protrudes about 3/4" up and is attached to the bottle cap, which has been sitting in a dry spot on a table for about 5 days.

I am curious as to what it could be. It doesn't resemble mold or anything I've seen at first glance, so I thought I'd post the picture and ask.

  • What is the Best Windows 10 Program for Printing Quality Photos?

What is the best way to print quality photos on Windows 10?

I no longer have access to Photoshop, so I am relying on free software on this computer.

The most advanced options I can find for printing is within printing preferences in Gimp:

    Fastres600

    Fastres1200

    Photo paper (glossy)

    Photo paper (matte)

I don't want to waste my photo paper on these settings because it results in poor prints.

Other built in programs (MS Paint, Windows Photo Viewer) do not offer any suitable settings for choosing specific premium paper types either).

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thank you

  • How to Transfer Adobe CS5.5 from Old PC to New?

I received Adobe CS5.5 as a gift in late 2012 while I was in college. I no longer have the disc, and I do not have an Adobe ID account.

I do have my full serial number, but Adobe phone support was unable to help me even with that because I have never had an Adobe ID. Unfortunately I can no longer get in touch with the person who bought me the gift originally.

What is the correct way to work around this? All of the Adobe programs work great on my old Windows 7 laptop, but I need to transfer the software to my new Windows 10 Lenovo.

    Please help

How to Get the Original Windows Movie Maker on Windows 10 (version 2.1.4028.0)?

How can I install a working version of the original free Windows Movie Maker on my new laptop running Windows 10?

I have this version of WMM on my older laptop (Windows 7). It is version 2.1.4028.0 and works great with a simple interface. I have been using this version since c2004 and want to continue to do so.

I have transferred the program files via USB drive to my new computer. It will open and function, but can't seem to play any video clips.

How can I download a working copy of this free Windows classic?

  • How to Revert to my Previous iTunes Version?

I updated iTunes yesterday and do not like the new format. I would like to revert it back to the previous version I had installed on my laptop. Unfortunately I do not know exactly which version it was. The icon was blue and the layout was much simpler.

I am sure there is a simple way to achieve this, but I could not figure out how with my research.

    I am running Windows 7.

    Thank you

  • Best Place for Free Dispersed Camping Near San Francisco?

I want to avoid booking a hotel and find a place to camp for a group of 3 people for one night. All of the established campgrounds seem to be fully reserved.

Ideally we'd find a spot to set up a tent around 11:00pm (no camp fire) and pack up in the morning.

    Any suggestions that are legal?

  • Which Inexpensive Mini DVD Camcorder has a hot shoe + Threaded Lens?

  • Toothpaste / Toilet Dilemma?

I accidentally dropped a newly opened tube of toothpaste in the toilet with the toothpaste cap off. The toilet was recently flushed. It’s not my bathroom or toothpaste.

Should I tell the owner? Offer to get an entire new tube of toothpaste because of this? Not tell them? Just rinse it off? I don’t know the best protocol here.

  • Strange spark of light with popping noise in house?

While sitting at my desk today I saw a small spark of bluish white light flash in mid air near the ceiling. It was accompanied by a popping sound. Very similar to a light bulb burning out, but there are no lights, or electronics near the area.

    What could this have been?

Black Shadows in my 35mm Photos?

I need help diagnosing a problem I have been having lately with my Nikon F3:

As you can see in the attached photo, an inconsistent black shadow has appeared in several of my exposures. I have ruled out the camera strap, and the shutter does not stick.

This happens without flash, across multiple lenses. The shadow sometimes appears curved, coming into the center of the frame only, or diagonal.

Help! I don't want to risk ruining more photos.

    Any ideas?

  • Is it possible to modify a Nikon F3 to add a needle light meter?

I am having issues with the +- light meter in my Nikon F3. The classic needle meter has always been my favorite, so it would be the best of both worlds to have that meter in my favorite SLR.

    Any ideas?

  • Help Finding Journal w/ Numbered Pages?

Can someone assist me with finding a journal with the preferred features I need? Internet searching has been exhausting and I have not yet found a match.

    Features:

    Hardcover journal.

    Numbered lined pages.

    Smaller than 11" H x 8 1/2" W in size,

Preferably around 9x6, or 8x5 in size.

It seems numbered pages are a rare feature in journals and notebooks, yet incredibly useful.

Those with numbered pages by Boorum and Pease are nice, but too large, and very expensive!

    Thank you for your replies.

  • How to kill Wood Boring Beetles in painted wooden antique?

I have an old wooden pillory that has wood boring beetles inside. (Yes, a pillory). I first noticed them when I heard scratching noises coming from the piece. There are small holes, as well as larger exit holes in the wood.

I have had this pillory for over a year and I still hear the scratching noises.

Needless to say, I need these beetles gone. The noise is annoying, and it creeps people out (aside from the fact that it’s a pillory being fairly creepy to begin with).

Exterminators are quoting me over $500 to gas it. Heat treatment is also too pricey.

Since the wood is painted, I'm told “Boracare” will not work. I repeatedly squirt termite foam deep into the tunnels. No effect. I left it outside a few nights in the freezing cold last winter - no effect!

I believe they are a species of Powder Post beetle, most likely Bostrichidae.

I'd love to hear some inexpensive treatment ideas!

  • How to fill holes in wood from wood boring beetles?

I have a valuable wooden antique piece with several deep holes made by wood boring beetles. What is the best product to fill the holes, and what tool do I need to squirt the product into the holes? Most of the holes are less than 1/4 inch in diameter. I have tried caulk but it is too thick to penetrate deep enough.
