  • Can a low high-school GPA affect a college-student's internship opportunities?

    I am a college student at a university with a 3.51 GPA. I transferred to my university from a community-college with a 3.23 GPA. However, my high-school GPA is a lowly 1.6!

    I recently filled out an internship application in which I was asked for my high-school information, including GPA. Will my low high-school GPA negatively impact my chances at getting this internship, even though I have a very high college GPA?

    It seems to me that my current GPA might possibly show how much I've improved over the years...

  • Determine the position of the object as a function of time?

    The velocity of an object is given by the expression v(t) = 3.00 m/s + (5.00 m/s^3)t^2, where t is in seconds. Determine the position of the object as a function of time if it is located at x = 1.00m at time t = 0.000 s.

    The answer is: 1.00m + (3.00 m/s)t + (1.67 m/s^3)t^3 ...but I have no idea how to get this answer. Any help in understanding this would be much appreciated.

  • How many different ways can five elements be selected when repetition is allowed?

    This is a Combinatorics question.

    In how many different ways can five elements be selected in order from a set with five elements when repetion is allowed?

    It can't be just 5!, I'm not sure how to approach this, any help would be much appreciated.

  • Why is 1 not a subset of {1}?

    This is a Discrete Math question.

    So, obviously 1 is not equal to {1}... and I know that {1} would be a subset of { {1} }.

    Is it because just "1" being a subset does not have brackets?

  • What happened to "Coast to Coast AM" in Atlanta GA?

    As of very recently, the radio station AM 640 seems to have been bought out by "ESPN Deportes", an all Spanish radio format...

    So, can we still listen to Coast to Coast AM in Georgia? And on what station? (AM or FM?)

  • Does being modest and humble give me an advantage as a computer programmer?

    I find that there are a number of people in my field are often very arrogant, quick to anger, and seemingly have little interpersonal skills.

    I have read that an important quality that companies look for in computer programmers are strong interpersonal skills, such as: the ability to work well with others, the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others with different skill sets, and that code should be written in a way that is simple and easy to understand.

    I can identify myself as having such social skills, not out of arrogance but because respect and tolerance are virtues that I constantly strive for.

    So all of that being said, does this give me an edge over the competition? Or should I strive more to "fit in" with my counterparts and adopt an attitude of arrogance when needed?

  • How much knowledge is acceptable for an entry-level programming job?

    Specifically, I am interested in working for my university doing this. As of now, I have a fundamental understanding of HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, XML, XSLT, and am improving my knowledge of OO with Java (just wrapped my head around polymorphism vs. implementations)

    So:

    - What specifics might an entry-level job expect?

    - What kind of programming interview questions might I prepare myself for?

    - And what kind of personal coding might be acceptable for a demonstration? (I have a nifty Google Maps webpage I've been working on, as well as some school projects, and some minimal internship work)

    Also, I have read that many now look more for good work-ethic qualities in interviews, rather than knowledge of obscure programming topics... I hope this is true, because every time I search for programming interview questions I am shocked by how little I seem to actually know (for instance, this question -- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2444359/what-is...

  • Can I move a question to a different country's Yahoo Answers?

    A few times now I have been surfing within Yahoo Answers, and clicked on a search result asked in a different country.

    Then I ask a question myself without realizing I'm in the wrong country, ha.

    My only solution has been to just delete my question, and then copy-paste it into my relevant country of the United States, in which I unfortunately then lose an extra 5 points...

  • Is it difficult to work your way through college with paid internships?

    - Is it common for paid internships to pay enough to live on, and work with your school schedule at the same time?

    - And that being said, do such internships work with full-time students?

    It would be nice if I could quit my crappy job, and do work relevant to my field of study.

    I am a computer science major.

  • What programming languages should I learn, and why?

    I am working towards a computer science degree, and even in my spare time I am looking to build the best skill set I can in general. As of now, I have a pretty good working knowledge of these web-related languages:

    - HTML

    - CSS

    - Javascript

    - PHP

    ...and also of XML, XSLT, and some OO with Java. I've also made use of the Google Maps API, and as of now am studying Android in my free time.

    I am interested in Python, though I'm not sure how relevant it is in the current market. Also I want to learn more OO, and it seems like C# might be good to focus on because C# .NET seems to be such a big deal. Hmm, and I am very interested in studying VBA ("Visual Basic for Applications") for automating MS Word and Excel, though I'm not sure how relevant that is either.

  • How do you compare the velocity and acceleration of 2 cars?

    David is driving a steady 23.0 m/s when he passes Tina, who is sitting in her car at rest. Tina begins to accelerate at a steady 2.80 m/s^2 at the instant when David passes.

    - How far does Tina drive before passing David?

    - What is her speed as she passes him?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    So, I'm pretty sure it has something to do with using these formulas:

    - s = v * t

    - s = (u * t) + (1/2 * a * t^2)

    ...but I have no idea how to make sense of the t values. I have determined that (23 m/s) / (2.8 m/s^2) equals 8.2143 seconds, the time it takes for the accelerating car to reach the same velocity as the constant velocity car...

  • (Javascript) Is there a way to force a linked file to open in the operating system?

    I am linking an mp3 file in HTML like this:

    <a href = "/mp3s/myAudio.mp3">Click to Listen or Download</a>

    However, this is automatically opened in a new tab with Quicktime in Firefox... I don't want it to do this, so is there a way to force the operating system dialog window "Open file with..." "Save file..." ?

  • Could a storm cause RCA cables to hold a charge and stop working properly?

    After a crazy storm recently, my Wii (hooked into the DVD player, and out to the TV) stopped displaying video. However, the DVD player was still fully functional, and the Wii was still displaying sound (but NOT video)...

    So, I unplugged all of the wires. As I was doing that the RCA cable tips going out from the TV accidentally touched the RCA cable tips going out from the Wii (at this point nothing connected to the DVD player). When the two white cable tips touched, it made a buzzing sound in the left speaker. So I started playing with it, touching the two red cables to get a buzzing sound in the right speaker...

    Then when I touched the two yellow cables there was a faint static flicker on the TV screen. After playing with it for a minute or so, the Wii display screen began to show in the static. So I held them together for another minute, and then the video from the Wii was working fine, and has ever since.

    So, I'm wondering -- can RCA cables hold a charge build-up that could prevent one or more of the audio or video parts from working? When I touched the video cables together, did I discharge the cables? Also -- is doing something like that potentially dangerous or potentially harmful to the equipment?

  • Facebook -- why isn't "profile html" working?

    I want to add some widget code to my Facebook page, and this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnflKtuCkjE suggested I use the "profile html" app.

    However every time I click on it, it just redirects me to my profile home page instead of displaying any HTML editor.

    Do I have some security setting enabled that would block "profile html" from working?

    And if this thing just doesn't work, does anyone have any other app suggestions to use if I want to add a widget to my profile page? (a widget from my stackoverflow.com account)

  • How challenging is developing for Android with Java and the Android SDK?

    I rate myself as a lower-intermediate Java programmer, as I am very well versed with its' syntax and understand objects, but I have trouble with inheritance, polymorphism, and I frequently have the confusing error of "non-static variable cannot be referenced from a static context." I am usually able to fix the aforementioned error, but I encounter it so often that I am sure I am missing a key-concept with Java.

    I have become quite good with "loosely typed" and "object based" languages such as Javascript and PHP, and would rate myself as higher intermediate in these languages.

    So, basically I have a good foundation in programming, but I am having some trouble as of now with object-oriented programming.

    I am determined to get better at this, however, and I intend on developing an Android application for my own achievement and practice. There is a chance I may get a job at my school as well, in helping to develop an Android app for them.

    So, is developing for Android with Java approachable as someone whom is still learning object-oriented programming? Is this feasible to "learn as I go" on a job developing an Android app?

  • Can someone clarify how socialized medicine could be detrimental to the U.S. economy?

    It seems a self-evident truth, a ineffable human right -- everyone's need for access to health care... However, there is a constant outcry from the right regarding this issue, and I find it to be very difficult to understand why.

    So, I am very much interested in hearing what those on the right out there think about this issue, and also in understanding what the economic impact of socialized medicine actually means.

    Can income tax not be raised by some minimal margin to accrue such revenue on the whole required to enact public health care policies? Could pharmaceutical and health insurance companies not stand to invest in the future health of the nation?

  • What does being "one with everything" exactly imply?

    Upon observing myself and others, I can see that we are essentially the same in human capacities such as emotion, reasoning, and understanding (or lack thereof of these qualities). In other words, most of the time I find that it is easy to "put myself in another's shoes." So, might the experience of "one mind" be the awareness that we are like templates, and that in this way to know oneself is to understand others?

    It seems, though, that there is meant a deeper concept in such New Age / Eastern mystical statements regarding oneness... There is still a lack of connection in having to know something internally to then observe it externally in another person.

    There is often a loose argument about "energy" being the bridge between us all, the etheric substance that makes oneness possible. Though I often think along these lines, I still find it to be something separate, something that does not constitute oneness in itself. Similarly, "love" is a common argument for enabling oneness, but yet again it would have to be required separately for interconnection to exist.

    I think that Occam's Razor can be applied here, even in spirituality and philosophy, that the simplest solution may be the best. Taoism seems to simplify the complexity of this subject matter by determining it to be ineffable, that the "way you can go isn't the real way", that "the name you can say isn't the real name"... To me I understand this to be something that has to be experienced, and that thinking about such things separates you from the experience of it.

    But this does not explain how to go about experiencing such a thing. Common phrases in response might be "just be", or "just let go." Where I understand that the act of "letting go" is to see beyond our own ego, I am frustrated by the vagueness of this solution.

    Any thoughts out there, similar experiences, words of wisdom, etc..?

    And of course -- What did the Buddhist monk say to the hot-dog vendor? "Make me one with everything..."

    There is an unassuming link at this site: http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core ...that has like 50 or more different .jar files. WTF, which ones am I supposed to download and import? Is there not a single downloadable file somewhere with all of the relevant .jar files?

  • Should I join the International Dean's List Society?

    I got a letter of invitation from the IDLS which states that "as a member and having attained this lifelong honor, you may list your membership in the Society as one of your significant undergraduate accomplishments."

    It also states that as a member you have access to "our scholarship programs, one year unlimited access to personal and career development in the IDLS Online Learning Center, and our study abroad program and grants."

    There is a membership fee of $48.00 to join.

    Are they spammers, or maybe did someone at my school put me on their mailing list? Anyone ever heard of this? Is it worth joining? (does it really look good on a resume, are their offers worth it, etc..)

  • (Java) Why can't I compare getActionCommand() with a matching String value?

    I am making a calculator as a Java applet. I have successfully created the layout, as well as registering the actionListener to all of the JButtons.

    So, in my class that implements ActionListener I have this code for all of the number buttons:

    String buttonClicked = e.getActionCommand();

    // for number buttons

    for(int i = 0; i <= 9; i++)

    {

    if(i == Integer.parseInt(buttonClicked) )

    answer.setText(answer.getText() + e.getActionCommand() );

    }

    ...which works correctly. So, why doesn't this code work:

    if(buttonClicked.equals("/") )

    {

    answer.setText(answer.getText() + e.getActionCommand() );

    }

    ...are we not able to compare Strings with the getActionCommand() String contents? Or am I maybe not importing something that I should? I am importing this stuff as of now:

    import java.awt.*;

    import javax.swing.*;

    import java.applet.*;

    import java.awt.event.*;
