If I have multiple functions plotted on a single graph in mathematica, how can I add a key/legend?
I have a plot with multiple functions all plotted on it (to see the differences based on minute parameter alterations). How can I add some sort of legend or key to the plot to identify which color line corresponds to which function?
4 AnswersSoftware9 years agoWhat exactly is a Fourier Series?
I a junior level mechanical engineering student, and am currently working on a lab report. We have to use the Fourier series to determine where harmoics will appear in the frequency domain, given an input signal frequency, amplitude, and the sampling rate.
I have spent the past hour on wikipedia and wolfram and am no closer to understanding what the Fourier series even is, let alone how to use it to identify harmonics. Could someone please explain to me, in laymen's terms, what the Fourier analysis is/does and how I can use it to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!
2 AnswersEngineering9 years agoChristmas light help: One section of Icicle Lights won't light up; confirmed all bulbs are securely attached.?
One section of hanging Icicle lights in a strand refuse to light up. On both ends of the strand, lights are working; it is simply one section in the middle where about 4 "icicles" in a row are all dark. I double checked to make sure all the bulbs in the section are snug, and they are. Any ideas to what could be causing this or how to fix it?
1 AnswerDecorating & Remodeling9 years agoHow to I tell excel to use the value directly to the left of the current cell?
I am making a spread sheet in which an entire column has the same formula, except one piece is instead from whichever cell is in the current row but one column to the left (effectively, cell K12 wants the value from J12, K13 wants the value from J13, etc). Is there a simple command I can use to tell it to use that, or do I just have to go through to every single cell and change the row value for it?
1 AnswerSoftware10 years agoThermodynamics Entropy Question?
I apologize in advance, I hate when people ask for someone to answer homework problems for me but I cannot for the life of me figure this one out.
Consider a thermodynamic power cycle that receives energy by heat transfer from an incompressible body of mass m and specific heat c initially at temperature T(H). The cycle dicharges energy by heat transfer to another incompressible body of mass m and specific heat c at a lower temperature T(C). There are no other heat transfers. Work is developed by the cycle until the temperature of each of the two bodies is the same. Derive a symbolic expression for the maximum theoretical amount of work that can be developed (Wmax). Your expression should be in terms of m, c, T(H), and T(C).
I think I have developed the formula for Wmax, which should be: -Wmax = mc(2T(final) - T(H) - T(C))
The problem is I cannot figure out how to find T(final). I am pretty sure I have to use entropy equations (since that is what this unit is on) but I am having a hard time conceptualizing what exactly entropy is and does. Please explain your work.
Thanks in advance!
1 AnswerEngineering10 years ago[First time custom desktop] Could someone go over my build and let me know if everything is compatible?
Here is what I have so far for my build: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail...
I was hoping someone could go over it and make sure all the parts are compatible and that I have all the cables/connectors I need.
Feel free to critique the build and give me feedback as well; since this is my first build, any and all advice is appreciated.
Please note, this is primarily going to be a gaming rig, though I do plan to do some CAD and FEA on it (I'm an engineering student).
Thanks!
2 AnswersDesktops10 years agoDifference between Intel and AMD Processors?
What is the quality difference between Intel and AMD processors? I see that, when comparing two processors of similar clock speed and core-count, AMD tend be significantly cheaper. Is there some aspect of AMD processors that makes them of significantly lower quality than Intel?

Thanks in advance.
1 AnswerEngineering10 years agoHow can I fix a red light on the xbox power supply?
Please note, I do NOT have the RRoD. If I leave my xbox plugged in, often the power supply light will turn red. It has been getting steadily worse over the past week or two. Is this something I can fix by simply replacing the power supply, or is it a problem with the xbox itself? Thanks!
1 AnswerXbox10 years agoWhere can I find a creepy image of a hanged man?
I am looking for a photo of man hanged by a noose from a tree. The kicker is that it has to be creepy WITHOUT being graphic. I would like something either obscured, in shadow, unfocused, etc; it needs to be something a 10 year old can stumble across and not be scarred for having seen.
Sorry this is so oddly specific, but that's the whole reason I can't find one.
Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersPhotography10 years agoDoes anyone know of a good brief guide to reading electrical drawings?
I'm a mechanical engineering student currently working a co-op where my boss is an electrical engineer. He often asks me to find information from electrical drawings but I have almost no experience with them, and am struggling to learn how to read/interpret them. Does anyone know of a good, short online guide for reading electrical drawings? I'm already experienced with reading mechanical drawings, it's just the electrical I have trouble with.
1 AnswerEngineering10 years agoNeed relationship advice (story)?
So a few months ago I met this girl, I'll call her M. I was at a cancer support group (thankfully that whole thing is over, but that's another story) when I met her for the first time. At first I didn't really like her, but over time she started to grow on me. Then one day, a few weeks later, she tries to kill herself (I think she was in a lot of pain; she doesn't really like to talk about it). Anyway, she called my house after swallowing a bottle of pills but I wasn't home. My roommate, however, was, and went over and saved her life. Long story short, they started dating, which ended up being more awkward than I thought. I guess I had developed feelings for her, so it was really awkward seeing the two of them together. Still, I had gotten used to it, until I realized that my roommate was actually me and I shot myself in the mouth to kill him. Now a bunch of buildings are blowing up and I'm holding M's hand. What do?

1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoWhat are the pro's and con's of attaching a grounding cable to an insulated bucket truck?
I need to put together a brief report detailing the pro's and con's of using a grounding cable attached from the truck to the grounding cable on the pole when working on power lines. Please include sources if possible. Thanks!
2 AnswersEngineering10 years agoComputer cannot connect to facebook or google?
My laptop refuses to connect to either facebook or google. When I attempt to go to either website, I get a "unable to connect" message displayed. This is true regardless of which browser I used. All other websites I have tried work just fine; it is only facebook and google that will not load.
I have reset my router, disabled firewalls, and run a virus scan, and none have fixed the problem. All of my roommates have been successful in connecting to both websites, and they are on the same router as I am.
3 AnswersFacebook1 decade agoQuestion for voltage divider circuit?
I have a voltage divider circuit with a Vin = 10Vpp connecting to two resistors, R1 and R2. Both resistors are 10kilo-ohms. Frequency is 1592 Hz. What is Vout and the phase at R2? Please actually show steps. Thanks!
4 AnswersEngineering1 decade agoAre there any soft heat conductors?
I was wondering if there are any soft materials that are good conductors of heat. I don't mean liquids, I mean soft solids, like a spongy or rubbery material that can conform to other shapes. Thanks!
1 AnswerEngineering1 decade agoDifferential Equations Quesiton?
A 9 lb weight, suspended from a spring having spring constant k = 32 lb/ft, is perturbed from its equilibrium state with a certain upward initial velocity. The amplitude of the resulting vibrations is observed to be 4 in. What is the initial velocity, and what are the period and frequency of the vibrations?
I know supposedly the initial velocity is -1/9 lb/ft, and the period is 6(pi), but I don't know how to get to those answers and I have a test tomorrow. Please show me steps to doing it, and explanations would be appreciated. Thanks!
