  • Devout Christians- what would you think about ghosts?

I'm writing a fictional novel where the main character is dating a man who is a devout Christian. His father is also a pastor. The main character is being haunted by a ghost (not her house, but her herself). She goes to her boyfriend's father for help... and here's where my question is.

What would a Christian pastor do for someone who is being bothered by a ghost?

  • Looking for adult paranormal romance novels that aren't full of "smut"?

I usually love to read YA like Mortal Insturment Series, and Twilight, but I'm looking for something in the adult category.

I loved "The Host" and Kelly Armstrong's "Women of the Underworld" books, and I'm looking for more books like these.

Whenever I go into the romance section in bookstores, I'm overwhelmed by the covers boasting busty women with half naked men hovering about their cleavage- I'm not looking for those kind of books. Steamy scenes are ok, I'm just not looking for erotica type books.

    Any suggestions please? Thanks

  • Question on word count?

I'm trying to figure out how many words my manuscript is. I'm using MS word 2007, and at the bottom of the screen it says I'm at 79,000 words. Is this accurate as far as what a publisher would use? Also, what's the average length of a novel (I'm only 2/3 done and I'm not sure if it's getting to be too long)

  • What do you think of this title...?

    Nepenthe (pronounced ni-pen-thee).

It's an ancient greek drug that took away the feeling of greif and sorrow. The genus of plant named nepenthes (named after nepenthe) is a carniverous plant that lures in it's prey and then eats them.

I like this title because it fits well with the synopsis of my book, but I'm scared that it's too much of a mouthful and too easy to forget. My question is- What do you think of this title?

My book is about a girl who believes that she doesn't have the right to grieve the loss of her fiance, because she feels responsible for his death. She meets a ghost who gives her a huge adrenaline rush (which helps her pain), and she becomes addicted to his high. The ghost becomes obsessed with her, and when she realizes how dangerous the ghost is, he won't leave her alone.

Other titles I've thought of are:

    Beyond

    Seeking Oblivion

    Emotional Coma

    Nepenthe Addiction

    Haunted Coma

    and then there's just Nepenthe.

Can you let me know which one you like (or any of your own that you come up with?)

  • Any recommendations for a book on Grammar?

My grammar needs help! Does anyone know of a good how-to grammar book that I can get in Canada? (I'm writing a novel) Thanks.

  • Writers: Do you get your work peer edited?

I've finished writing a book and I would love to have someone read it and tell me their thoughts, but I'm a bit leery about just handing it to someone, even if I know them. Has anyone had problems with "idea stealing"? (Then again, maybe it's vain of me to think that my ideas are worth stealing lol!)

  • What forms of contact does a prisoner have?

If a woman had been sent to a correctional centre (in Canada) what kinds of contact with the outside world does she have- Email, telephone calls, or just post letters?

(It's for a fictional novel I'm writing. Thanks!)

  • If someone was arrested as a murder suspect...?

    Here's the scenario:

A girl is present during the murder of someone and the only other person at the scene dissapears after the incident (not even she can locate them). She calls 911 when the victim is dead (strangled) and an ambulance shows up, revives the victim who later dies at the hospital.

What would happen to this girl now that she is a suspect? Does she go to prison until a court hearing and if so, what type of prison would she be in and for how long?

Thanks! (this is all for a fictional book I'm writing)

  • What are non-denominational Christian leaders called?

I'm writing a novel, and one of my character's is a devout Christian. His Dad is a Pastor, but I'm not sure if "Pastor" would be a correct term. Also, where would his Dad go for his training. (Seminary?) Thanks- I want to get the terms right.

  • Writers: Anyone use a word hoard?

I'm finding that I have a hard time keeping a good amount of diverse descriptive words in to use in character conversation so that it's not a page full of

    "...." he said

    "...." I said

    "...." he said

etc. etc. Is there any resources like a website or something that gives word hoards out there?

  • Writers: Description of fear and what makes ghosts scary?

I'm trying to give a first person description of what it feels like for my character to find a ghost watching her in her living room. Things like:

A sharp demanding jolt tore through my stomach sending out a tingling sensation to my fingers but I couldn't move. He was staring at me with invasive eyes. The protective walls of my house that were meant to keep out intruders meant nothing. I was defenceless and exposed with no hope of retreat. He had the power of being able to watch me whenever he wanted without warning, and I was shaken to the core....

Anything else to add that would capture what it would feel like to find a ghost staring at you in the middle of the night? Thanks!

  • Kaitlyn shortened to Kate or Kait?

My main character's name is Kaitlyn, and her father and another main character call her by her full name. She prefers to shorten it though and so far I've been spelling it Kate. My sister says that it would make more sense if I spelled it Kait though. What's your opinion?

  • What would an ant say to a popsicle?

Any ideas? It's for something that actually makes sense in the context I'm trying to use it for... (a comical relief type of thing in a very serious situation)

Do you have a "quote" or a section of a paragraph, like a description, or use of imagery, etc that you've written and feel that it's just pure genius?

  • What's your favorite aspect of writing?

My favorite part is when my character takes over the story and does something completely unexpected. I end up sitting at my lap top howling with laughter making my poor husband think I'm either really vain for thinking that I'm 'just that funny' or completely nuts. (Naw, he's a good sport but sometimes the raised one eye brow I get from him is cute)

  • How old can characters be in YA novels...?

I'm writing a YA novel, but my main character is 23 and has just finished university. I've noticed in most books in the YA section that the main characters are usually 16 or 17.

My question is, will the character be hard to relate to for my YA audience since she's probably going to be older than the reader?

  • What YA books have a ghost as a main character?

I'm aware of the Mediator Series, and I'm looking for any other books out there that have a ghost as a main character in them I'm NOT looking for wicked scary Stephen-King type horrors though. Thanks!
