  • How do you prevent butter from separating?

I have a candy recipe that calls for cooking 1 cup of sugar in two sticks of melted butter (with some almonds). You cook and stir until the mixture browns and the sugar melts. I've tried salted and unsalted butter, fast heat, slow heat, room temperature ingredients, cold ingredients, stove top, microwave--lots of things, but more than half the time, just when things start looking good, the butter liquids separate out from the solids. I also find that the sugar doesn't always lose its granular texture. What can I do to solve this problem? I don't need guesses--tried and true answers only, please. Thanks.

  • How do you stop a toilet from flushing (Note: this is not a faulty stopper issue)?

I want to fill it to the brim so I can bleach some stains under the rim. But as soon as the water reaches a certain level, the toilet automatically flushes. How do I get it to hold the water temporarily?

  • How should chores be divided between homemaker wife and employed husband?

Kids are raise and gone. Husband works full time and makes a good living. Wife stays at home and does many projects not traditionally thought of as "women's work" (carpentry, hanging drapery rods, minor plumbing and electricity, painting, etc.) along with the usual cleaning, gardening, scheduling, trip planning, etc. Wife sorts the paperwork and husband writes the checks for the bill and balances the checkbook. Wife shares other "business" chores of the household (insurance, taxes, etc.) at LEAST 50-50. The grass cutting is done by hired help. There is no other household help.

Is it reasonable to expect the husband to put his dirty dishes in the dishwasher, put his dirty clothes in the hamper and hang up the clean ones, take out the garbage and change the garbage bag, rinse the sink after he spits in it, etc.? What else is fair to ask of him?

  • Computer start-up problems.?

This problem started about a year ago, went into "remission" and has now returned. Sometimes my computer starts up normally. Most often, though, when I try to start it up, the fan comes on and runs and runs, the router shows no pc activity, and the monitor detects no activity and goes to sleep. I have found that SOMETIMES slight movement of the pc will allow me to start it up without a problem. In the past, when I would unplug the computer for several hours it would seem to start up okay, but this doesn't seem to do the trick anymore. I recently unplugged everything, opened the computer and gave everything a good dusting. The computer started normally on the next couple of tries, but then started with the problem again. I have checked and rechecked all connections. It is not necessary to turn off the computer for this to happen; sometimes I have a problem restarting when the computer goes to sleep.

Incidentally, I have had a problem with shut down for every pc I have ever owned, including this one. I cannot just select "turn off computer" and expect everything to happen as planned; I usually get an error message. Sometimes the only way to shut it off is to turn off the power.

Any help will be appreciated. I am have a little mechanical ability and will be thrilled if this is something I can fix myself. Even if I have to take it somewhere, it will be good to know where to start. Many thanks!

  • Problem opening Word and Excel?

I have MS Office Small Business 2000 and Windows XP. Word and Excel worked fine on my old computer, but now, when I try to open either one I get a window that says "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Small Business 2000." It then says "Acquiring required information" and then tells me to insert the MS Office Small Business disc. However, if I click on "Cancel" very soon after the window comes up, the program will start.

If I want to open a Word or Excel file, I must first follow the procedure above to open the program, and then open the file.

The odd thing is that after Hurricane Katrina my office replaced their computers and the same problem started there. There was no problem until the new computers were installed. I no longer work there and have a short memory so I can't tell you what systems are used there.

    Any help is appreciated!

  • Healthy supper?

I would like ideas of what to cook for supper. It must be low-fat, low cholesterol (very small amounts of cheese, meats, eggs and dairy) and preferably low sodium (although I can adjust most menus for this.) Thanks for your ideas!

  • Where do people from New England or the northeast "summer?"?

I'm interested in visiting a spot on a lake or river somewhere in New England or thereabouts. I'm picturing a cabin that can be rented for a week or so, preferably with acess to a boat and swimming. Nothing outrageously expensive, please. And if mosquitoes or flies or heat are a problem, please let me know (specifically--like what is the heat and humidity range--I live in Louisiana and what is hot to you may not be hot to me.)

    Many thanks for your suggestions!
