  • How many cars sold in the US are subject to the "gas guzzler tax"?

I know which models are subject to the tax. That is here: http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/guzzler/420b08016.p...

The question is how many cars are sold of these models, and how much of a fraction of total car sales is it? I suspect that it's very small. Most of the cars listed are high-end sports cars. Trucks, minivans, SUVs are exempt.

  • Shop for mortgage before or after shopping for a house?

We are about to buy our first house, and I have read lots of books on home buying and mortgages. But there is still one thing that I don't quite understand and I can't find an answer for.

Ought we to first choose a lender, and then go shopping for a house? Or, should we first pick a house and make an offer and get it accepted, and then choose a lender?

I know that we should get pre-approved for a loan (we already are), but the pre-approval doesn't require us to work with that lender. How are we supposed to shop around now when we don't know yet what house we are going to buy or how much it will cost? Won't the terms of the loan (e.g. the interest rate, origination fees) depend on the cost of the house? If so, how can we shop for a mortgage before knowing how big it will be?

  • Get the contact list to show up on the main screen in Windows Mail?

    Hi,

I want the contact list to show up in the main screen in Windows Mail in Vista. I have read a lot of posts that ask the same question, and people often respond that it impossible to do this in Vista. However, I know that's not true, since I have had my contacts in the lower left of my main Windows Mail screen for the past few months. But this morning, all of a sudden, they are gone! Does anyone know how to get them back (or, for that matter, why they left in the first place)?

And yes, I know that I can also click on the Contacts icon on the taskbar to open Contacts directly, but I prefer to have the list in the lower left of the main screen always. Thanks.

  • How can I disable the low battery alert on my cell phone?

I have a Motorola Razr v3. When the battery is low, it beeps about every minute. When this happens in the middle of the night, I get woken up and upset.

Note to people getting ready to post a snarky comment: yes, I know that this isn't a problem if I keep my phone charged. However, **** happens and even the best of us occassionally forget to charge our phones, and being woken up in the middle of the night is a punishment that I deem too severe.

I also realize that I can turn the phone off at night or set it to vibrate. I would prefer to not have to do this, since if I do get a call I might want to be woken up for it.

I am quite surprised that this is the standard setting on my phone, since it's so damned annoying. I am even more surprised that I can find no way in the owner's manual or on Motorola's support site to do this.

  • Where can I find the average annual mutual fund performance over the past few decades?

Here is what I need. For each year from 1982-2003, I want to know what the average rate of return for mutual funds was that year. I could probably find the growth in the S&P 500 or the DJIA, but I would prefer mutual fund info. For example, in 1997 the average return of all mutual funds might have been 12%, while in 2001 it might have been only 2%.

Bonus: I would like to know the performance each fiscal year (June 30 -July 1), not each calendar year, if possible

Double bonus: In addition to the mean, I would love to have other information on the distribution of returns, e.g. the median return each year, the 95th percentile return each year.

    Thanks!

  • What is the name of a novel I read about a serial killer chasing tornados?

And it's not "The Breathtaker" by Alice Blanchard. In the book I'm talking about, it is very dark and disturbing. I think the killer also kidnapped children. He had some sort of traumatic experience with tornados and chased them and killed people. It also might have had something to do with Native Americans, e.g. the killer was Indian or he was killing Indians, but I also might be confusing it with Sherman Alexie's "Indian Killer" (which it's also not). I read the book about 5-8 years ago, and it was pretty new when I read it, I think.
