  • 1997 Kia Sephia 5-Speed will not downshift into third?

The car shifts up through all the gears fine, but will not go down into 3rd at all. Second and first are possible, but only with a bit of grinding. The car has about 60K miles on it.

Any ideas on how I might fix this?

  • Sigma Slot Machine Error Message: "RAMS WRONG"?

I have a 1992 Sigma Patriot Plus slant top slot machine and today when I turned it on, the message on the LED panel says RAMS WRONG. I haven't had any trouble with it previously. I do not have a manual either.

I have tried reseating all the connections on the mainboard and even reseated a few of the EEPROMS. I do not know if there is a hardware reset on the machine anywhere.

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Ipod weirdness?

I just did a restore on my ipod (60gb Video), wiping it out completely and formatting to HFS+ from FAT32. The problem I'm having is that under disk use in iTunes, it's showing almost 10gb dedicated to video, but there aren't any watchable videos on my iPod.

I disabled the syncing of movies, podcasts and TV shows, and when I browse any of the video categories on the iPod itself nothing shows up. So, what's up with this?

  • African sumac tree falling over?

I've got a tree that was planted as a nursery sapling last year and its trunk is like a wet noodle. It won't stand up on it's own without a wooden stake to support it. The tree seems healthy otherwise.

I have a wooden stake taped to the trunk which keeps the tree upright, for now, but what do I have to do to ensure the tree grows a strong trunk?

  • Flying with baby formula?

I just checked the TSA site and they say that flying with formula or breast milk is not a problem. The problem I have is that formula goes bad after 2 hours (according to the package) and I want to travel with bottles of water to mix the formula into at mealtime.

Anyone got any experience with flying with babies and water? They only specifically mention breastmilk and formula on their site, not water/juice/etc...

  • Which retains cold better Ice or Alcohol?

I always keep things in my freezer to provide some thermal mass to retain the cold and keep the fridge from having to work so hard. Would bottled water retain cold better than bottles of booze because it freezes or would the booze do a better job because it doesn't?

  • Grinding burrs of stainless spoons?

My girlfriend went through a period of throwing spoons down the garbage disposal this summer, and they all got nicked and scratched up. I used my Dremel to smooth them back down again, but I'm worried that they might rust now.

Is stainless only stainless on the outside, or will the smoothed out surfaces develop rust now?

  • USB 2.0 Perfomance on the Mac?

I'm using a macbook and I've noticed that the USB 2.0 hard drives are insanely slow on this computer vs. when I use the same drives on my XP machine. Initially, the drives were formatted FAT32, so I thought maybe OSX was choking on that bottleneck, and I reformatted to OSX Journaled, but the fact remains that the drives are painfully slow.

    Of note:

I'm copying things like MP3's and DIVX files

I'm not using a USB hub

Even formatted for OSX, perfomance is about the same as FAT32

The drives are 7200rpm Seagate and WD and both get the same results.

The drives work tons faster on my XP machine, but I haven't installed BootCamp to get an idea of perfomance on the identical hardware.

My question is: Is USB 2.0 perfomance deliberately crippled on OSX and is there any workaround? (And do you suppose they might fix this in 10.5??)

  • Automatic weapon maintenance?

I've heard that it is important to rotate cartridges out of stored magazines. I have a Springfield XD40SC with three magazines, and I've been rotating cartridges from one magazine to the other, but is this actually important? What benefit, if any, is there to letting the springs relax?

  • Preserving dead animal tissue?

What is the best method of preserving dead animal tissue for display when the emphasis is on price? I am thinking a mason jar of formaldehyde would work fine, but I don't know where to get the chemicals. Plastination and freeze drying are not options due to cost.
