I have been working as an independent contractor since June, so I have income that has not had federal tax withheld. I filled out form 1040ES and if I did it correctly based on my tax liability from last year and taxes that will be withheld (married filed joint with traditional wages/taxes) I do not believe I have to make estimated payments. However, our income is higher this year than last, so I did the math on the 1040A return and came out with tax owed. So even if I don't technically have to pay estimated quarterly payments, can I still pay some rather than owing on the return and paying a penalty then. Am I correct in assuming I won't be penalized for my estimated payment being late (due Sept. 15) since I don't really have to make it?

I have a credit card I use regularly with a pretty low limit (1500) that is almost maxed out. I have another with a higher limit (4000) and a higher APR that I rarely use. They higher card is offering a balance transfer with 0% if paid off by February (with a 3% fee on the transfer). Is it worth it to clear some space on my every day card and save on the interest. I typically pay 200-300 per month towards the balance anyways.
