If your are charged for a small crime and are charged with misdemeanor how bad is that does that mean you will now have a criminal record and will it be harder to find a job cross the boarder

if you get charged with a crime at the age of 18 and they just give you a slap on the wrist and call it a misdemeanor like for example being caught with a small amount of marijuana then does that mean that you have a criminal record and will it be hard to cross the boarder or get a job stuff like that
