  • Please help – wife’s laptop keeps crashing?

She’s a professional and uses it for work and it’s so frustrating. It’s a Dell (forget which model) with a Miscrosoft OS (forget which one). It’s 2 yrs old.

She doesn’t do much on it – other than MS office stuff (word, excel, powerpoint) and browsing the interwebz, she uses it for her work software (which is not huge) – she’s not a graphic designer or anything. And no video games or anything like that either. It even seemed like it was too much computer when we got it but I wanted to make sure it was good and all the Dell models came with oodles of memory anyway.

I haven’t run the antivirus or malware so I’ll do that but let’s assume that’s all fine. It specifically crashes when she is using the software for work (which is locally stored on her laptop – not cloud based).

But the software was fine when first used, is it possible that the data that was put into it caused it to do this?

Any suggestions on what to do? Replace the whole thing or just get a new OS or re-image? Will any of that help or do you think it’s that specific software?

    Thanks.

  • Is it normal to have blurry vision with contact lenses?

I just got contacts after wearing only glasses for years. I find that at times throughout the day, my vision gets blurry when I am wearing the contacts. It happens sometimes when I am looking at the computer screen and it also sometimes happens when I am exercising, or sometimes I feel like I am doing nothing to bring it on.

I called the optometrist and he said that it’s the nature of contact lenses that this happens. He said that the lens sometimes moves out of alignment in the eye and vision may blur somewhat until it moves back into alignment. Sounded logical. But, I prefer my glasses I told him because everything is always clear. He again reiterated that the glasses don’t have the same issue with coming out of alignment. The coverage they provide is whole, but the lens can shift somewhat. He also mentioned that dryness can cause it, but I sometimes get blurry vision in the morning when I just put them in and they are still moist.

Is this right? Do all contact lens wearers experience blurry vision sometimes? I have astigmatism if that matters.

    Thanks

  • How to tell someone your gender in an email?

I have a foreign name so many are not sure if I am a guy or a girl - I'm a guy by the way.

I sent an email to someone who replied and then copied someone else. The reply said "can you help her with..."

I'm trying to think of a funny and lighthearted but friendly way to tell her that I am a guy.

    Thanks.

  • What do you think of this roadbike? Is it suitable for me?

    It’s the Giant Defy 3.

    http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/de...

I know, entry level but don’t be so hasty with the snobbery please.

I ride about 1,500 miles/season (maybe more if I get this ride). This is my second season doing any real riding.10 miles per day commute (roundtrip) and I go out about 3 times/month on rides of about 50 miles or so. I have a bike from 1985 that I love but it’s just too big for me – aches and pains. If it were my size, I would definitely keep it.

The Defy has relaxed geometry because I am so tired of the neck and shoulder aches. And, I don’t plan to race so I don’t need anything super sporty so this seems like a nice compromise. I may enter a hill climb competition but other than that, will just do mostly fitness rides and maybe some centuries.

So what’s your opinion? Is it good enough for me or will I be disappointed with the components after a few months? Remember, my ride now is a 1985 downtube shifter bike with old componentry on it and it’s held up fine so far – but I did have to make adjustments every few months.

  • What type of flat screen should we get?

We are moving and are in the market for a flat screen – either plasma or LCD.

We are looking to stay at around the mid 40” in size and have a budget of around $1k but want to stay as far below that as possible (without compromising quality too much) because we also need to get the TV stand and any associated equipment.

We usually watch basic TV (also trying to decide between cable or satellite) and some movies on the weekend.

I already have a pretty decent home theater receiver (Harmon Kardon) with 2 high end bookshelf speakers and matching subwoofer (2.1). I do not intend to outfit the rest (will not be getting more speakers) for now.

    Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • Cable or satellite TV?

We currently have that triple play thing with Comcast (cable, phone, internet) but are moving, which has caused e to re-assess. We will be getting a flat screen (either LCD or plasma – haven’t decided yet) and were wondering if we should get cable or satellite.

Seems that satellite has better HD offerings but we are in Boston, where weather can be an issue – I’ve never had satellite so I don’t know how much it is affected by weather. Also, keep in mind there is a discount for the triple play because we are bundling everything. So we would have to get just the phone and internet through Comcast if we went with cable.

Any opinions? Anyone who has had both and feels one is better than the other?

    Thanks.

  • How much will we pay in taxes – approximate %?

This is the first year my wife is a 1099 person. Assuming an income of $70k and deductible expenses of $15k, what would be the approximate % that would go towards Federal tax? We are in MA so if you have info on State tax, that would be really great too, but I guess Federal comprises the bulk of it right?

We recently learned about the self employment tax (how frustrating that our gov’t taxes us for working for ourselves – shouldn’t that be encouraged? Why not just impose a commuting to work tax or tie wearing tax too). Anyhow, I understand that complete accuracy is not possible but a ball park percentage would be helpful so we know what to expect – I mean are we looking at 10% or 50% of her income to go towards taxes?

    Thank you.

  • Will keeping a heavy item in my car damage the suspension system?

I have a treadmill that is about 200 pounds in a Subaru Forester. I am waiting for a buddy to come by and help me get it up some stairs and into my humble abode.

Until this buddy gets there, it sits in the car. Should I be concerned that the constant weight will ruin the suspension system (or anything else)? If so, how long do I have before damage begins?

    Thanks.

  • Adults – does it sounds like my coworker wants my Mayo?

I did not get many answers the last time so I am reposting in hopes of some thoughts:

No, the question is not about food. My apologies to any uptight ladies I’ve already offended. But hey, loosen up a bit.

I’m in my mid 30’s, she is in her mid 40’s. She has always been pretty darn friendly to this author. Lately, she’s been talking and touching me more than usual. Maybe it’s the spring-like weather.

Today, she came into my cube and called me in the hall. There was a sizeable roach out there and she wanted me to help. We giggled a bit and I teased her. It seemed to me that she was making a bit more out of it than she needed to – meaning that I don’t think she was as uncomfortable as she let on. She gets behind me to hide. Then I start walking over to the offender and she holds my arm with her hands, walking over with me. I of course flex to give her a taste.

I get rid of the roach (no, I did not kill it) and come back into the office. We then start talking and she tells me about when she was younger and she went out clubbing with her friend – they went back to her friends place, she went in to use the bathroom and roaches scurried about when she turned on the light. My thought was, why the superfluous info. about clubbing? She purposely chose to preface her point with a statement about going out to a dance club - where people wear skimpy clothing, are flirtatious, and seeking to connect with one another.

She dresses a bit young for her age and in terms of class, I would say is on the lower end. But, she also looks like she’d be a fun romp and open to some of my deviances (we all have them, don’t be judgmental, it’s not like I’m into peeing on her or anything extreme). Or at least I’d be able to convince her to try, which is fun in itself, if she hasn’t already.

Some background – I’m married with a young kid. She’s been divorced for a long time. We work in the same office but our functions are different. I am more high level in terms of job depth and in about 2 years will likely move into a more senior position. She will probably not report to me directly - I will not have responsibility to review her performance or make termination decisions but will be able to assign her tasks and oversee some of her work.

Lastly, note that I do not need or want advice on marriage or morality. Please do not tell me to get a divorce if I want to mess around. That is not what this is about so don’t take the easy way out and satisfy your need for moral lecturing by focusing on the wrong issue – stay on task.

Any thoughts about the situation with my flirty co-worker?

Last time I got a question from someone who was frustrated that I mentioned that I was married and then asked people to not comment on that. So just to explain, I offer the marriage info because I think it plays a roll and is a consideration. But I didn't want the question to degrade into that area, and knowing that this type of information makes people's mouths water to give lectures, I felt the need to be explicit on what to concentrate on.

So it can be a consideration but not a focus.

    Thanks.

  • Is our lease obligations over when another lease is signed?

We are moving out of our apt a couple months before the lease expires but we found someone to take our place. The new family had been accepted by the apt owner and they are about to sign the lease.

The owner wants us to sign an Early Termination Agreement (ETA). We are not completely comfortable with the wording so haven’t signed it yet. Rather than go back and forth bickering about wording, is it even necessary to sign it? Does it protect us in any way?

Really, all we want to know is if our obligation to our lease ends when a new one is signed. If so, the ETA serves no purpose correct?

    Thank you

  • Should I get together with my co-worker?

I am in my mid thirties working in a professional office staffed with 10 people that is part of an organization of over 20k employees.

There is a co-worker of mine who is in her late 40’s. She’s been coming on to me recently and I am pretty secure that I can get her in the sack. She is divorced (for a long time), while I am married with one kid – no moralists please, I don’t need help with that.

This would be pretty convenient for me – no, or little time off work (there is a hotel next to my building), not much sneaking around (wife will just think I am working normal hrs so I don’t have to tell her I am working late or make any other excuses), etc. She is decent looking, not great, but thin. She is a bit low class but that works well in the sack and it’s not like I’m looking for a lifelong friend to share my dreams and fears with. Just a bit of regular conversation and then a lot of yum yum.

There is also the issue that I stand an OK chance of being promoted in a year or two. This wouldn’t make me her direct supervisor really (indirect maybe) – I would be the assistant director. I would be able to give her direction and she would need to execute but I wouldn’t be responsible for her annual review – so I couldn’t fire her or give her a raise. We have vey different job functions and titles - mine is already senior to hers.

So, what do you think? Should I lollygag her? I think she’d be a lot of fun in the sack but am just not sure if it is a good idea because we are in the same dept. and, what’s more, who knows if she can keep her yap shut. I don’t want her smiling all seductively at me all the time. But again, I am reasonably sure she would be a whole lot of fun and open to some kinkiness.

I appreciate all answers but I DO NOT need advice on morality so please keep it at a low roar if you absolutely must mention how this will destroy or affect my marriage and all that blah.

  • Why do people put things over their mouths when they are protesting?

Sometimes it’s masking tape or whatever and sometimes they write a word or message on it. I don’t get why they are covering their mouths though…I know I am missing something obvious.

  • I broke my lease, will I have to pay?

I am breaking my lease with 2 months owed on it. The rent is pretty hefty ($2400/month) so it represents a total loss of $4800 for the owner. There was no security deposit.

My question is – how likely do you think it is for the landlord to try to collect? By “try to collect” I don’t mean send me nasty or threatening emails. I mean a real collection effort in a legal sense, how likely is it that he will go to the trouble and expense to pursue me? I am in MA and he lives overseas (in England). Also, when I move, I’ll have my mail forwarded but it’s not like I’m going to give him my new address.

I am trying to work it out with him by getting the place rented before I move but if I don’t, do you think he will pursue the issue with me or drop it?

  • What can I do about my tenant breaking the lease?

I have been renting this space for about 5 years. The previous renters were fine. This time I have renters who signed a lease but have recently told me they are moving out – 2 months prior to the lease expiration date. These 2 months represent $5k of rent ($2,500/month).

What can I do? Is it worth it to get an attorney involved to collect the rent? How much will that cost me? The renters told me yesterday that they are moving out at the end of March, which gives me 1 month to rent the place (but they are still there).

Is there anything I can do to get them to pay me? And again, would it be worth the effort to get an attorney involved (it is $5k after all).

    Thank you.

  • Do mortgage brokers try to get you to sign with the highest possible rate?

We dealt with a mortgage broker who we eventually dropped. At first he gave us a terrible finance option and we said no, a few days later he came back and said he can make it better and did, we were tentative, he then came back and said he can do even better and did. We said OK. We then checked with some traditional banks who had better terms AND a better rate (which was confirmed and locked in so it was true). Does a mortgage broker make more $ by selling you a mortgage with a higher interest rate or with worse terms, such as an ARM?

  • Removing and re-using a spoon from my trash?

I'm in my office and just finish breakfast that I ate at my desk while working. When I was done, I threw the spoon I used in my own personal waste basket. The waste basket was completely empty and the bag gets changed every evening so it was a new bag.

I then had a hankering for a fruit cup and rather than wasting another plastic spoon, I removed the spoon I threw in the wastebasket. The spoon wasn't deep in, it was sitting at the top of the bag because it didn't slide down into it yet.

Is that gross or is it OK?

  • Are we at risk if the property appraisal is incorrect?

Subject is a condo in an eight unit building. Appraisal states that all 8 units are owner occupied. In reality, there are 4 units that are owner occupied, with the other 4 being rented.

For financing purposes, it is advantageous for the appraisal to represent that 8 units are owner occupied but I am unsure if we, as buyers of one of the 8 units, are at risk if, in the future (after closing), this is detected.

Anyone who has insight on this? Thank you.

  • Should I yum with a co-worker? Part II?

I am reposting this because of the disappointing answers I received in the first round.

Understand this people: I am not frightened of my wife finding out. This would be for fun and the other woman wouldn’t go off and tell – so that is a non issue. Also, I don’t intend on leaving my family and I am obviously comfortable with the actual act of cheating, so it’s not like I’m going to be swayed with the “fix your marriage” thing, OK – just consider me a blind idiot and let that one go. Actually, for the sake of answering, let’s assume I am single. Here is the original post:

I’m in my mid 30’s in a professional work environment. One of my co-workers is in her late 40’s and divorced (for a long time). She flirts with me and it seems like she’d be open to some nookie if I responded in kind (which I haven’t). I can read the signals of our conversations so let’s assume I am right about that for now.

Couple of issues. First, I am married with a kid. But my relationship lacks the sexual stimulation I need so I’m extremely frustrated (please, I don’t need advice on spicing it up or talking it out with the wife - this isn’t about how to fix that part of my life). The other issue though is that I have a very real shot at being promoted in about a year or two, which would make me her direct supervisor. It’s a large company (over 20k employees), but a small office (10 employees).

She’s not great looking but definitely not too bad either. Thin but looks a bit flabby here and there (I’m no superstar but do keep a good diet and exercise a good amount so am in pretty descent shape for my age so it’s no wonder she wants my flavor). It would also be so convenient to have this at work – much less sneaking around, no extra time of work, etc. I can usually tell a little bit how most gals are in the sack by their manner. She seems like she would be about average…but receptive to getting kinky.

So, I don’t know…should I? So far I have resisted and thought better of it, but lately, I am feeling the urge.
