  • Is there a way to change to an old fashioned key?

I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue. Love the car, but hate the factory key. I'm forgetful, so with my previous cars, all I did was make several inexpensive copies of the key so I always could find one when it was time to go to work. My Rogue came (used) with only one key, and to duplicate it involves several hundred dollars worth of circuitry and programming. I cry foul! I live and work in an area where car theft is not much of a problem, and it would be much easier to just have a normal key, not one loaded with specially programmed circuitry which must be perfect and present to turn the car on.

So... is there a way to convert my ignition/steering into something like a "normal" car where all you need is a simple key, one of those metal things with teeth in all the right places, to make it go??

  • overdue oil change -- how to recover?

My Nissan is running great -- so great that I forgot all about its oil changes, for about two years. Walked past an auto shop tonight and thought "duh, it's been HOW LONG??". Checked the dipstick, thick black gunk. Added some fresh oil. Will get the oil changed tomorrow. I feel terrible because I used to be meticulous about this and then suddenly got all space cadet on my poor car.

That said, I've been trying to figure out what else I should do to help my car recover from this abuse. I've been looking online and see videos of people disassembling and cleaning engines coated with thick black goo. As bad as I think it is, it probably isn't quite that bad, since it seems to be running fine and I'm not having any smoke or other problems. Will the fresh oil mix with and soften up the old, thick oil so it will leave the engine more easily during the oil change? Would it be advisable to have a series of oil changes every month or so for while to help clean out the engine, or is that pointless? I've seen some discussions of adding transmission fluid for a short time and then changing the oil again as a flush. Advice, please! Thanks so much.

  • Formula neede for glider problem - physics?

Two gliders collide on an air track, you know the initial mass and velocity of each glider. Simplified case (don’t worry about elasticity or friction, and the track makes it 2D so no angles). Can someone please give me the formula to solve for the two velocities after the collision? Thanks.

  • non-wired internet access without wireless?

The scenario: classroom with wired ethernet port. Quality is excellent but teacher doesn’t like having to plug into the port with the ethernet cord. Obvious solution is to install a wireless access point or router and connect from there. I would like to know what ALTERNATIVES exist to the obvious wireless solution. I remember reading about a solution in which a dongle on the computer’s ethernet port communicated directly with a small base device which was plugged into the ethernet cable. Yes, I realize that this sounds a lot like wireless, but I have to find out about alternatives which do NOT use 802.11. If anyone knows whether such a device exists and what it is called (a link would be delightful too) please let me know. Thank you!

  • Connecting DVI / HDMI to Panasonic TV for monitor?

I’m helping a coworker set up a desktop computer to a nice new Panasonic flat-screen tv; she wants to project from the computer onto the tv for demonstrations (no need for television capability). Computer is fairly new Dell with Windows XP pro (downgrade), and has an ATI video card with a DVI port and an S-video port. Television has numerous inputs, including several HDMI ports, RCA ports, and others… Monitor has DVI connection as well as the standard HD15 cable.

Right now, she has a Y-cable going from the DVI port on the PC which converts to DVI and hooks to the monitor and a long monitor cable (about 20 ft) that goes to the television. The quality stinks. The driver software for the ATI card only sees that it has some anonymous monitor out there so is running at the most generic settings. I think quality could improve tremendously if we were to go from the DVI to the HDMI port with a DVI-HDMI cable. However, not having done this before, I’m eager for insights and feedback. Would love to hear your recommendations on how to set this up!

  • Can you name some colleges that don't have a drinking culture?

A friend of mine is a junior in high school. He has experienced a lot of upheaval in his life due to alcohol abuse by his parents, and he really would like to go to a college where the social atmosphere isn't dominated by alcohol. He is a good student, and could get into a competitive college but probably not "most competitive". Undoubtedly there is alcohol use and abuse everywhere, but we have heard from many current college students that it would be hard to be part of the social life of the college without drinking. Are there any colleges where this is not so prevalant?

  • Does bankruptcy require you to show that you are looking for a job?

An acquaintance of mine who has had several professional, high-paying jobs, has decided to file for bankruptcy. He resigned from his job about 9 months ago (he was asked to leave for cause and chose to resign instead). Since then, he has done very little to get a new job. He says he has sent out a few resumes and done some networking as well as had a conversation with a headhunter. He thinks most jobs out there are beneath him and that he wants something of his level of education and experience, even though he's basically been fired from his last few jobs. He has been living well by borrowing from his parents and living off his credit cards and now it has caught up with him. He spends most of his time at the gym. He isn't paying child support or anything else to his exwife.

He just retained a lawyer to help him file for bankruptcy. He says the lawyer assured him it would be no problem. I'm amazed. Can you really do that? Don't you have to show that you have been trying to get a job or have been trying to live within your means? I'm not sure if he really can get another high-paying professional job with his history, but it wouldn't kill him to do something less glamorous. Is he going to be rewarded for his living irresponsibly all this time?

  • Can I use my existing coax cable with the new TV?

So I am considering buying a new TV for the first time in years. I have been completely ignoring the new technology up to now, but we just got a PS3 and it seems that we have to get with the times and get ourselves a nice flatscreen digital tv. Good enough.

So I've been reading about the HDMI connections and that sounds like exactly what we need to make those games on the PS3 look stunning, not to mention blu-ray movies. However, I'm confused about the cable TV. I currently have just ordinary cable tv coming in through an ordinary coaxial cable. We are not big TV viewers so that has always been just fine, no box, no premium channels, no onDemand, just ordinary cable. It appears, though, that many of these televisions have no coax connection. Am I missing something? Do you have to upgrade your cable tv in order to use many of these televisions? If that's the case, I might stick with my old 19 inch tube TV.

Aside: the one I'm admiring is a Sony KDL-40V5100 but I'm flexible.

  • Do my front tires have to match the rear? Ideas for good tire?

The front tires on my compact SUV went completely bald and I have to get new ones. Back tires are fine. These are 4x4 Continental Contact P225/60R17 98H. The car has less than 30 thousand miles on it and I'm not impressed,. I'm thinking of trying a different brand and/or model tire in the same size, but the guy at the inspection station seemed to think I should stick with the Continentals because that's what's already on the car. I can't think of any good reason why this should be true, so I'm throwing it out here. Any thoughts? If it's okay to use a different tire, do I have to match all the specs, or just some? And does anyone have any ideas about a quality, durable tire that comes in that size? Thank you!

  • Why is neutral wire in circuit breaker box discolored?

I finally figured out that the reason one of my electrical circuits was dead was an open neutral, and I traced it back to the panel. I found some loose connections at the neutral bar, including one for a really loose wire that appeared to go to that circuit, and all is well now that those have been tightened up. But I am concerned because the white casing on the offending neutral wire looked discolored and sort of scorched looking. Is it reasonable to assume that it was a result of it being loose and knocking into other wires in the panel, or something else rendered innocuous by the fix? Or is this something far more sinister? It certainly seems to be working fine now. Thanks!
