  • Atheists: if you had to worship something as god, what would you chose?

    and why?

You must choose something, abstract or concrete, and believe it to be an omnipotent, conscious entity worthy of your worship.

I`d choose the sun; its warm, brings light, and is the ultimate source of biological energy.

And no lame stereotypical atheist answers like "something with evidence" or "science."

  • God cannot be omniscient and give humans free will?

If we accept the condition that God is omniscient, he must know exactly how your life will be before he creates you. If he does not, he is not omniscient.

God creates each human knowing exactly how they will make each decision they ever make. If a human deviates from this life course, God was incorrect and therefore is not omniscient.

Because each human has a life history known by God that they by definition must live, humans have no free will.

I feel my logic is sound, but if you see a flaw please point it out.

So is god omniscient, or do we have free will?

  • was Jesus haploid?

Jesus was male, so he had to have gotten a Y chromosome from somewhere, and mary`s egg can supply only an X.

    Did God provide the sperm?

Did God use mary as a surrogate for himself in human form?

Was Jesus a haploid female in disguise as a man?

Was mary a male afflicted with XXY who had a botched circumcision and took on the identity of a female when he grew breasts in puberty? and then meiosis produced a sperm with an X and Y but with only one copy of other chromosomes, and God gave Mary a uterus for this jesus sperm to behave like an egg and grow into baby jesus?

  • reccomend some good novels?

Id like a good novel to read, I haven't had time to read much recently but my schedules freed up a bit

My favorite novel is Brave New World, I absolutely loved it. If you can recommend something else good by Huxley that`d be great.

I read call of the wild when I was 11 or 12, I really liked that one too.

a couple years ago I read the hunger games. It was all right but I didn't like the writing style; I like prose to be at least a bit poetic.

I gave paradise lost a shot, and parts of it are some of the most beautiful things I`ve ever read, but there were too many biblical references and I got tired of looking stuff up. I even tried giving the bible a read but honestly its a bore and been translated so many times that the poetry is lost.

I love the poetry of whitman, keats, shelly, and byron as well.

Basically what I`m looking for is a well-written, sort of philosophical novel.

  • white residue on potted plant soil?

There is a white residue on the top of the soil on my plants, I assume a mold or some type of fungus. I wouldn't mind as I really doubt its of any harm to humans, but I`ve noticed a few small flies around the plants. It turns out they're fungus flies, feeding on the soil fungus.

I only see a couple flies at a time, but flies are annoying and I dont like them. Ive hearrd I could get rid of the flies by watering the soil with soapy water, then rinsing the soil a few times with water to remove the soap. I assume this works by killing the fungus as well as the flies.

But fungus is good for soil, and my plants have been growing extremely well since Ive noticed the white fungus on the surface. I don't want to kill all the fungus in the soil, is there any way I could get rid of the flies or even just the surface fungus without killing the other fungi in the soil?

Also, a spider just moved into the corner of my bathroom near my plants, so I think that this will probably keep the fly problem to a minimum anyway.

    thoughts/advice?

BTW the plants are sansevieria trifasciata and some sort of bamboo if that helps.

    Thanks

  • fruit flies on potted house plants?

Ive noticed a few (no more than 2-3 at a time) fruit flies on my 2 potted plants I keep in my bathroom. Ive had plants become infested with these guys in the past so I`m a bit worried.

I see a few ways I could go about dealing with this, I`d like some feedback on which you think is best.

    1) I put a layer of gravel over the soil, I`ve heard this works.

    2) I`ve heard putting a cup of vinegar out attracts and kills fruit flies, I could try that.

    3) nicotine is a chemical produced by some plants as a pesticide, I could sprinkle the tobacco from a cigarette (I`d use 100% organic additive free American spirits to avoid potentially harming my plants with additives).

As for 3, I`m worried about nicotine harming the plants. essentially, plants produce defense chemicals to harm pests, but the chemicals also slightly harm the plants themselves. (Google optimal defense theory for more info)

My plants are sansevieria trifasciata, native to tropical west Africa, and some type of bamboo, native to Asia I assume. if there are no plants in their ecosystem that produce nicotine they would likely have no pathway to detoxify nicotine.

on the other hand, I dont know much about the mechanism of nicotine toxicity other than it is a neurotoxin, so it could be altogether harmless to plants

Anyway, thanks for your feedback, I`d especially love to hear if anyones tried using tobbacco to kill the flies.

  • ant problem?

I moved into a first floor apartment and I have a bit of a problem with ants coming in through cracks in my window. On the exterior there are a ton of ants crawling on the brick wall and coming in and out of cracks in the bricks. I sprayed raid ant killer along the edges of my window and set bait traps outside, what else can I do to kill these little *******? I don't give a damn about using harsh chemicals, I`d spray them with agent orate if it was legal.

  • Did I damage my tonsil removing a tonsil stone?

I was sick a few months back and saw a big gross tonsil stone, so my brilliant self decide to remove it with the pointed side of a disposable flosser ( basically a plastic toothpick).

Now, every few weeks or so I see a massive stone in the same place, and I remove it again and again because I'm afraid it will give me chronic bad breath if I leave it.

I fear I may have made a crater in my tonsil which allows this monstrosity to keep forming.

every time theres about 3 stones (I think, its possible Im breaking apart one big one) in this pocket in my tonsil, each about the size of an apple seed, maybe a little smaller.

So what should I do about this?

  • Vitamin A while taking isotretinoin (accutane)?

I recently began taking isotretinoin, 80 mg per day. Being a vitamin A derivative, I know taking supplements containing large ammounts of vitamin A can be dangerous. However, my multivitamin contains a small amount of vitamin A, 70% of the DV (3,500 I.U). To put this in perspective, one medium carrot has almost 3 times that amount of vitamin A. Since I wasn't told by my dermatologist to avoid carrots or other foods high in vitamin A, I assume the small amount in my multivitamin wont be dangerous. thoughts?

  • have any bodybuilders tried a push/pull day split?

I`ve been bodybuilding for almost 2 years, with great results. I`ve been using the standard week long chest day, back day, etc. split. But it seems that research shows that a muscles growth cycle only lasts 2-3 days, so I`m thinking of using a 3 day split.

Heres my plan, comprised of mostly supersets:

    day 1

    flat bench press/ dumbell fly

incline bench press/ dumbell frontal raise

dumbell laying tricep extensions/ dumbell overhead press

squat/ leg press/ leg extensions (circuit)

caple tricep pull downs/ chest cable crossovers

    day 2

    deadlift

bent over row/ barbell bicep curls

    seated row/ cable pull down

    lateral raises/ upright row

bent over lateral raises/ dumbell bicep curls

lying leg curl or seated leg curl/ romanian deadlift

    day 3

abs and calves, I`ve had a day specifically for abs and calves for a few months now with fantastic results, so no real Q`s about this.

my only concern is that I wont be able to do all the isolation exercises I normally do, because of time restraints.

I`d love to hear any thoughts on this program ,as opposed to a standard week long bodybuilding split.

  • Is this an eating disorder?

I'm 17 yrs old, male. I think I may have some type of eating disorder. I am disgusted by food, and I hate eating because it makes me feel disgusting. I also love the feeling of hunger, and hate being full. Im not obsessed with food, and I almost never think about food, so I don't think I have anorexia. I do force myself to eat because i know a lot about nutrition and excercise, i want to get into bodybuilding. I write down everything i eat so i know I get enough protein, etc. i obsessively exercise, spend hours at the gym. I don't do much cardio because I already run on a calorie deficit almost all the time. When I get stressed or depressed however I stop eating and go on ridiculous runs where I push myself to the brink of passing out. I know I have an amazing physique, broad chest/shoulders, skinny waist, insane abs, because everyone tells me so, but whenever I look in a mirror I see myself as fat. I don't really binge eat (rarely I will while on drugs).

I was wanting to know if this is a specific disorder, or if it's even a big deal.

  • i run almost to the point of self harm when stressed?

when i feel stressed, exercise is pretty much always how i cope. but when i feel really stressed, depressed or anxious i'll go for a run where i just sprint until i feel like im going to pass out, i see spots, and my lungs feel like they have collapsed. then i jog until i catch my breath and repeat for usually 4-5 miles. i feel much better afterwards, although i always have horrible stomach pains and diarrhea for a few hours after (dehydration?). the feeling i get during the run is pure euphoria, the closer i get to that feeling of being on the brink of total exhaustion the better i feel.

i was wondering what the psychological reasons for this might be.

my hypothesis is i am exerting total control of mind over body at a time when im so stressed i feel i have no power over my life.

but id love to hear what more knowledgeable people think.

  • Could this be an inguinal hernia?

i was doing squats, and i felt a burning sensation in my left lower ab/pubic area, on the outside of the ab, next to the upper leg. basically about 4 inches below and 2 inches to the left of my bellybutton.

its an isolated lactic acid type of burn, it happened a few reps into my 2nd set.

a few days ago the same thing happened in the same spot, but instead of a burning sensation it was pressure.

i cant feel a bump or anything, and its only happened when i do squats, both times i stopped when i felt it.

i was using a smith machine, and i always focus on using proper form when i do squats, but i don`t use a belt.

i`ve been working lower abs a lot lately, could this maybe just be a strain/soreness/etc. in the muscle?

  • workout plan, what do you think?

m a high school senior, and I've been running cross country and pole vaulting all 4 years, so im in pretty good shape. now I am finally done with sports, and i`ve always been interested in bodybuilding, so i made this workout plan:

    day1- chest,shoulders,(calves/abs)

    day2-upper leg,(calves/abs)

    day3-back,arms,(calves/abs)

    (calves and abs alternate everyday)

rest day after 2 cycles, (on 6 days off 1)

the workouts are relatively intense, weights ranging from 18-20 reps to 3-5 reps. and lots of exercises to failure.

I also have a pretty good nutrition plan, tons of protein, whole grains, unsaturated fats, etc.

    any comments/improvements on this routine?

  • why do i all of a sudden feel like i have a cold?

i felt fine all day, but i went for a run (just around 4 miles, less than i usually run) and when i got back i felt like i had a ton of pollen in my nose. its been around 2 hours since i ran, i still feel the same and ive been having to blow my nose every few minutes, the mucus is clear, by the way. i took some allergy medicine (loratadine) about 90 minutes ago and it didnt do anything.

i also havent really eaten today, so im thinking virus (because of the clear mucus) that my weakened immune system is now unable to fight? but the symptoms really shouldn't appear this suddenly, right
