  • Pool pump behaving most curiously?

This pool pump is only sucking very gently, not enough to make the creepy crawly do anything useful. However, the outlet is producing a fantastically strong jet of water (which seems a little impossible). It can run like this all night so it isn't sucking air or finding water somewhere else. There is no loss of integrity in the creepy or in its piping and no blockages (I can disconnect the pipes completely, it is hardly sucking at the weir). What is going on?

  • What does a severed animal head mean in SA?

We have found a severed animal head in a bag on our pavement this morning next to a section of our wall that has been knocked down, presumably last night. It is in an advanced state of decay so we are not yet sure what sort of animal it was. Is this a certain type of threat in South Africa?

This is not the first time this has happened. In 2004 a horse's head was deposited on our pavement in a bag. Later that year I and both my parents were shot in cold-blood during a break-in. Is this a harbinger of another impending attack? Are local thugs copying mafia films now?

  • Is the Australian immigration means test negotiable?

I am considering moving from South Africa to study in Australia but one of the main student visa requirements is that you pass the means test to prove that you can support yourself for the duration of study. That means I have to have around A$20,000.00 (for just one year) available in my bank account which, after airfares, tuition fees and visa costs, will be a lot more than I have. I have relatives and friends in Australia so if I can show that they are willing to provide accommodation, might the requirements for the means test be lowered? Are there any other ways in which it could be lowered. I am capable of living a pretty austere lifestyle ;)

  • In MS Excel/Open Office Calc how does one get a list of what formulae are using a given cell?

I made a gigantic spreadsheet calculation two years ago and now I need it again but I want to see if any of the cell info is superfluous. I just need to see if certain cells are being and formulae or not. How do I check this? Manual checking is impossible as there are many millions of formulae. Thank-you.

  • Is there a website on which I could post a book sample?

I would like to post a book sample on a community site to expose my writing to a little critique. Do you know of an appropriate site?

  • Should a gunshot wound still be causing pain 8 years down the line?

Eight years ago this month I was shot in the right lung during a house robbery. The bullet made it's own exit but I had to undergo a thoracotomic incision so that the pleural cavity could be drained of blood. As soon as my doctor thought I was ready, I began frequently exercising the damaged muscles (pectoral, lateral and intercostal) hoping to regain full range of motion as soon as possible. Despite having been quite active for the full eight years since the shooting, some motions are still rather painful (especially lifting my arm straight up). Also, when the weather becomes colder quickly, I feel a strong ache in the entry and exit wounds as well as at the drain insertion point. The best relief I can get for it is to use a hot water bottle but if I am away from the house it can be a great hassle.

Is all this normal after so much time? I was sixteen in 2004 (ergo twenty-four now).

  • Can't play Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam. Can anyone help me?

As you may know, Steam will not let you play a game on your list until it has verified that the game is updated to the latest version provided by it's authors. Left 4 Dead 2 has always had regular updates almost every single week. These updates took a while to download and usually, by the time I could play, the next update was about to be released. But since about two years back, the updates, instead of downloading 400Mb for example, would download the entire game file from scratch (over 12 Gigs!!). There is no way my connection can come even close to downloading that much every week (or every six months for that matter). It shouldn't load the entire game file but it does. What can I do about this? I would hate to think that I can never play my paid for (and expensive) game again. I have already tried complaining on the Steam message boards. They are totally unhelpful.

  • Why can I no longer paste in Open Office Calc?

I am working on a Calc sheet with a large number of calculations and at one point the option to paste started to vanish from the quick menu (Ctrl-V obviously didn't work either). At first, re-opening the file solved the problem temporarily but now it simply will not paste anymore.

I think the calculations may have become too much for my 2 gigabytes of RAM and that this might be causing the problem. I can still paste to other programs though. I am copying columns of information (16000 rows at a time) from a mine scheduling programme and the copy function is behaving correctly.

The problem is not to do with document protection either. I was adding 6 new calc sheets to a 3-sheet set of calcs that I made in January. I subsequently divided this into two files with three extra sheets each to reduce the file sizes but this still did not help.

    Can anyone help?

  • Paul Kruger must go but Kill the Ama-Bhulu is fine?

The ANCYL is again trying to get Paul Kruger's statue removed from Church Square. "Oom Paul Kruger and his generals" should be removed "because they represent the heritage of apartheid and pose a threat to our community and our future". What utter twaddle. However, they seem to think that singing "kill the Boers" and "kill the Whites" is a fine thing for the promotion of racial harmony in S.A.

The ANCYL appears to be comprised of people who cannot be compared to the mentally challenged as this would insult the latter group. Isn't there some way the organization could be dissolved or revamped? And what on the Planet does Paul Kruger have to do with Apartheid?

  • Should South Africa be giving land to "previously disadvantaged" ppl?

Under South Africa's present land reform policies, white farmers whose farms are claimed, are given a matter of a few months to vacate their farms. They are almost always payed less than market price for their ancestral homes and usually receive the money only months or years later (naturally it is common that they struggle during and after the wait). So now the land is in the hands of the native communities who allege it to have been their home in the days of yore. Well and good.

Let us examine the results of the take-overs. In the vast majority of cases, the farms in question are found dilapidated and unworked and unproductive just a few months later. And this despite the numerous and healthy grants and agricultural training assistance rendered by the government's taxpayers. With farms across the country falling into this state, South Africa's food problems will only become exacerbated.

One can argue the rights and wrongs of land 'reform' all day but my question is who exactly is this going to help?

  • Coming to South Africa (crime capital of the World) for the World Cup?

You surely have little to be afraid of because although the pretty average South African murder stat of 2600 local deaths per month will certainly take place during the several weeks of the World Cup, our caring government is trying to ensure a minimal number of tourist murders in this period. You do know that stab-proof vests are being sold here just for your safety right? You can buy one if it makes you feel better but I wouldn't worry as the government says that most of the murders taking place will be the result of gunfire and vehicular collisions, so these little precautions are probably quite unnecessary. In any case, your chances of being robbed/beaten/stabbed/shot/raped/run-over or otherwise negatively affected by the inconsideration of certain individuals, is probably no more than about twice that of the average South African at most, given your 'wealthy tourist' status. Spokesman Whiplash Mahlangu, says that if South Africa can keep the number of tourists murdered during the Cup down to 26 (or 1% of the local monthly carnage) he would consider it 'a job well done' and he urges us to remain positive about the event.

    So, you still coming?

  • Do you know how much Mandela's birthday bash cost us?

I don't wish the old chap ill or anything but every year millions upon millions of taxpayer's Rands are spent on weeks long, country wide celebrations for his birthday. This year over R2,000,000 was spent on his concert in the Transkei alone. And all this while people are starving and freezing to death in this country (forget the fact that the money is actually meant to benefit the taxpayers in some way). This is typical of the ANC's budget policies. Those who pay their taxes get little or nothing for them and those who pay nothing get free houses which they sell and proceed to erect new tin shacks so they can get more free houses.

One can only imagine what his funeral will cost us. How do they get away with this?
