  • Can I fix this NEC 1550V monitor?

    I have a NEC MultiSync LCD1550V.

I plugged it in and it won't give me any video. The green power button flashes on-off-on-off in about half second intervals, and there's a very quiet click like the monitor is trying to do something but can't quite do it. *Sometimes* when it clicks or flashes, the screen also gives a very subtle flash of light too. I've tested the cables on other machines and they're OK, it's definitely the monitor.

I opened the monitor up to visually check the capacitors, and none of them look like they're blown. I found a forum post or some such online saying that the monitor is in "protection mode," but it didn't say what that means. I found - and lost - another webpage which gave at least one option of how to fix protection mode (besides unplugging & replugging, and short of replacing the capacitors), but now I can't find that page again.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? TBH, I scavenged it from a neighbor's trash; so it's entirely possible that it's beyond hope.

  • What partition(s) would be good?

Old computer running XP which I'm using to mess around with for educational purposes, not necessarily to be "the" computer. It's got a 40 gig HDD on which Windows is loaded and is more than 3/4 full. I've added a 320 gig slave HDD I was planning on installing Xubuntu (Linux) on.

My thought was to partition it into three 100 gb (or so) each: install Xubuntu on one, have another available for another Linux distro and a third for ??? Does that sound like a decent idea? Better ideas out there?

  • How can I websearch making capital letters count?

Like for example, if I want to search for YouTube with a capital Y *and* a capital T. I get hits for YouTube, Youtube, youtube, youTube, YoUtUbE, etc. Even when I use quotes around the word or use the "exact phrase" field. How can I search so that I only get results that use "YouTube"?

Again, YouTube is just an example.

  • Can I run an old Mac game on a PC?

I recently picked up a used copy of "Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time" game from 1995, and didn't notice until I got it home that it was the Mac version. Is there a way to run it on a Windows/Linux computer? If yes, how?

  • Is it a good idea to move the wheels to the back legs of a walker?

My senior mother has been using a wheeled walker to get around for the past four months or so. It has two wheels on the front legs and no wheels on the back, just a couple of glides over rubber tips at the bottom. The glides are starting to wear out. She has suggested moving the wheels from the front of the walker to the back, because that's where more of her weight is being placed when she holds the walker. Is that a good idea? Or a bad idea?

I figured if it was a good idea I'd be able to find a bunch of web posts talking about it, but since I haven't found that perhaps it's contraindicated.

  • Galaxy Tab - Google location service. Yes or no?

What's the upside/downside to having this enabled?

Portable computer newbie. Got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi. It's asking me whether I want to use Google's location service. I can't skip this and decide later. It doesn't really explain *why* I'd want it - at least not in a way I understand - and the manual just says "read Use Google Location service screen information and enable either or both of the Google location services."

    The text on screen is:

"Google's location service uses Wi-Fi and mobile networks to provide apps with your approximate location without using GPS. You can change these settings later with the Location & security and Google Search settings.

"Use Wi-Fi and mobile networks to determine my location. This allows Google's location service to collect anonymous location data. Collection will occur even when no applications are running. [check box].

"Use my location for improved Google Search results and other Google services. [check box]"

NOTE: I can't ask the people I got it from. I won it in a sweepstakes, so it's not like they're my technical support team.

  • What's wrong with my mopping technique? What am I doing wrong?

Mopping the kitchen floor. All I've used is hot water, S p i c 'n' Span, and a generic version of Mop-N-Glo. Plain water is the most common usage, followed by water and powder SnS dissolved in it, and only very occasionally Mop-N-Glow. When I finish I thoroughly rinse the mop until the water runs clear.

In the past year I've gone through several mop heads on two different mops. First mop was a Libman rollermop. The mop head that came on it only lasted about 5-6 moppings (if that) before it disintegrated and fell off the attachment. Replaced with another mop head I bought at the same time as the mop, it happened again only faster. I thought that it could be one bad batch of heads, I bought a new mop head. That one only lasted one or two moppings before it fell apart. "Well," I thought, "it's obvious that Libman mops are no good." (Only I didn't think it nearly as politely as that.) So I bought a roller mop from Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart mop did the EXACT SAME THING after only one mopping and an emergency spill cleanup!!! I thought that perhaps not hanging it up to dry might have been the problem - but I did that with the Wal-Mart mop and it lasted an even shorter time. Apparently it's me and not the mops. So what am I doing wrong?

Our old mop was a Roll-a-Matic roller mop. The mop heads lasted for YEARS. The only reason I switched is that nobody carries RaM mop heads around here - everybody has their own brand, and none of them fit on any other mops.

I'm trepidatious about washing the floor again, simply because I can't afford to buy a new mop head after every use. They say on the package that you should change the mop head after 50 uses - but as I indicated above, I can't even get *five* uses let alone 50. Aargh!

PS. Y!A won't let me use the word S p i c even though it's a perfectly innocuous word in this context.

PPS. For some reason Y!A wants to put this in the "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered" category. WTH?

  • Buying glasses from club store; prism glasses online?

    1. As I understand it one can use the pharmacy in a club store (like Costco or Sam's Club) to fill prescriptions without having to join the club - basically because pharmacies aren't allowed to turn anyone away they can't make you join if you only use the pharmacy there. Does that go for optical departments too? I have a prescription, I just need the glasses.

    2. Is there an online store that sells glasses with prescription prism lenses? I was going to go with Zenni Optical but according to their FAQ they don't sell prism lenses.

  • Where can I watch/download "Dark Justice" online for free?

Yeah, I hate these questions too. But anyway.

This was a show from 1991-1993, part of CBS's "Crimetime After Primetime." I haven't been able to find much info about the show online, let alone video. I'm particularly looking for the episode "Needy Things" from season 2. Thanks!

  • How do I make mailing labels in OpenOffice.org?

I have an excel (spreadsheet) file of names & addresses. I want to make sheets of mailing labels. How do I do this in OpenOffice.org? There is a way, I know because I managed to do it once before, but I have no memory how. Something to do with databases I think. Please explain as though to a child, step by step A-B-C-D. Or if you could point me to a website which has instructions that's good too as long as it's explained step by step. Everywhere I look they seem to skip parts as though that's too basic to explain, but that's the part I'm having trouble with!

  • what's this numerology called?

My former gf was very into a specific type of numerology, where one's personal number was calculated by the number of days in the year before and after one's birthday. For example someone born on January 1st would be a 1-4 (1 for 1 day before/as of your birthday, 4 for 364 days after=3+6+4=13=1+3=4), February 2nd would be a 6-8 (Feb 2=33 days=3+3=6, 332 days after =3+3+2=8), etc. Everyone is a 1-4, 2-3, 3-2, 4-1, 5-9, 6-8, 7-7, 8-6, or 9-5. According to her being a 7-7 is best, somehow. Leap years are dealt with by figuring the 1st number only. Other than dealing with leap years it doesn't matter to this numerology what year one was born in.

She never specified what subset of numerology it was, just "numerology" as if it was the only numerology there was. She's dead now so I can't ask her even if I wanted to and if she'd answer in any kind of specifics, which knowing her she probably wouldn't.

  • why shouldn't one use Grecian Formula 16 on beards & mustaches?

My beard & mustache are a much lighter color than my head hair. I don't want to invest in a more expensive hair dye for them. According to Grecian Formula's FAQ:

Q: What about my beard or mustache?

A: No. Do not use on any facial hair--including mustaches, beards. eyelashes or eyebrows. May be used on sideburns.

What would be the problem with using it on beards & mustaches?
