  • How can I help my dog?

I got my dog when he was 6 months old. I knew that the guy who had him was abusing him, so even though it wasn't really the best time (my dad had just died) I took him in as soon as I could. Almost a year later he's still gets scared of men.

At first it was all men. He would bark non-stop and refuse to go anywhere near them, but if they approached he'd quickly quiet, cower, and tremble. He's gotten better. With the help of a family friend and his son (who would come over to let him get used to men), within around 3 months he was able to overcome it for the most part.

He's fine with just about all guys now. But we've noticed that if he sees anyone who looks like his past owner, to this day, he loses it. His past owner had dark hair, a beard, was around 6 feet, a bit overweight (beer belly), and always wore a baseball hat. Any man with even a couple of those features and it's almost like he has a panic attack.

For example, my neighbour stopped by last week - around the same height, unshaven, and wearing a baseball hat. My dog, who is normally very happy to see him - lost it. He wouldn't stop barking, wouldn't go near him, was shaking like a leaf, and refused to leave my side.

    How can I help him?

  • Good names for a male lab/beagle mix?

I've had dogs before, but I've never had the chance to name one. It's a male lab/beagle mix that's black in colour.

Any ideas would be great. :)

  • How can I teach a child with ADHD to read?

He's about 8 or 9 years old now. He isn't on any medication, his parents are against that. But his mother tells me he really wants to learn this, so getting him to sit still shouldn't be much of a problem.

I'm not a teacher, and I've never done anything like this aside from helping my 3 year old cousin with recognizing basic colours. His mother really needs the help though. The school isn't being much of a help and hasn't been all year. They can't afford to get him any private tutoring at this time. She's the only one really helping him with this and would like it if someone he liked would help him too (I used to babysit him). She needs the help, and I'd like to be of any if I can.

From what she tells me, he can recognize certain words but that he reads them wrong. Like instead of 'said' he'll read it as 'saying' or 'says'.

If anyone has any tips for me at all I would greatly appreciate it. :)

  • Can anyone recommend me a good book to read?

I like reading, but I haven't been able to find any good books. I was thinking of Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult, but I'm a little worried it might exhaust me emotionally. I read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and liked it, but I cried through parts of it to the point where I had to put the book down because I couldn't read through the tears. I've also heard good things about John Green's Looking For Alaska. What do you think? What would you recommend?

Please don't recommend either Harry Potter (I'm already a huge fan and own all the books XD) or Twilight (I can't stand it).

  • Too tall to wear high heels?

I'm 5'6. I'll be 18 in September. I bought some high heels today (the first I've ever owned - was a tomboy until about a year or so ago) and they have about a 4 or 5 inch heel. I'm worried I might look too tall in them. I didn't really notice how much taller I was until I got home and was walking around the house in them (trying to get used to walking in them).

Is 5'6 too tall for heels that high? How tall do you think is too tall for high heels?

  • The guy on the news in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?

"And finally, bird-watchers everywhere have reported that the nation's owls have been behaving very unusually today. Although owls normally hunt at night and are hardly ever seen in daylight, there have been hundreds of sightings of these birds flying in every direction since sunrise. Experts are unable to explain why the owls have suddenly changed their sleeping pattern." The news reader allowed himself a grin. "Most mysterious. And now, over to Jim McGuffin with the weather. Going to be any more showers of owls tonight, Jim?"

The weatherman called the news guy 'Ted'. Do you think it's Tonk's dad? He is a muggle-born and they have the same name.

    What do you think?

  • What was your worst experience with a teacher?

I'm doing a report on current bullying and have been doing interviews with a bunch of my neighbours. A lot of them have told me a lot of horror stories about things their children have gone through and things they themselves have witnessed with not just students, but teachers.

So, what's your worst experience with a teacher?

  • What's your favourite perfume?

I'm 17 and have never really been into makeup and perfumes and things like that (was a complete tomboy for a long time). I'm now curious about perfumes and have been asking around for opinions and suggestions. So far, I've heard some good things about Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture, Princess by Vera Wang, and both Curious and Fantasy by Britney Spears.

What's your favourite? Do you have any you would recommend?

  • What's my relation to him?

So my cousin Chantel, who is my father's sister's oldest daughter is going to be having a baby. She's going to be induced today (May 9th) and will be having a boy. :D

I was wondering what I would be to him and him to me. And if I were to have children, what would my cousins baby to be mine and mine to hers?

  • Looking for a Harry Potter fanfiction?

I read it a little while ago and liked it, but I can't seem to find it now. D:

I'm pretty sure it was on fanfiction.net. Harry and Professor McGonagall go back in time to where Harry's parents were still alive. Harry was just a baby and McGonagall was the age she had been at that time. I think it was Dumbledore who said that McGonagall had, "just fainted" when they were brought back.

I believe they were able to bring the fact that Peter was a death eater to light and the Potter's went to live at Hogwarts for a little while. Where I last left off, I think McGonagall was talking to Harry in the hospital wing.

  • Fathers Day Gift Ideas?

I know it's a little ways off, but I like to plan ahead.

I'm not really all that close with my dad. He's a bit of an alcoholic and was abusive to my mom when my parents were together (they split up when I was 6 - I'm 17 now). I usually only see him about twice a year and maybe a phone call once every couple months.

So with that in mind, I'm not looking to spend a ton on the guy, but I'd feel bad if I didn't at least get him something. My problem is I don't know what to get him. I don't even really know him that well.

What I do know about him is that he used to work out a lot, he likes cars (fixing them up, looking at pictures of them, admiring really old ones at car shows), the colour red, he drinks a lot, likes camping every now and then, and has back problems.

So, any ideas? Try to keep it any where from 30 dollars and under.

  • What makes someone a geek?

It's for a story I'm writing. What really classifies someone as a geek? Is it the clothes they wear? Their social skills or possibly lack thereof? Their interests (if so, are there any specific interests that cause it)? A combination of all three? Is there some kind of social standards you have to meet in order to avoid being labelled a geek? And when a girl get labelled as a geek is it for different reasons than a boy would?

How does one end up getting labelled as a geek?

  • Trying to find a book from my childhood, does anyone know it?

I have an assignment for school where I have to name what my favorite book was as a child and write about it, but I can't remember the name of it. Normally I'd just pick another book with a title I remember but I really adored this book as a kid, to the point where my parents tried to hide it from me on numerous occasions to get out of reading it. XD

I remember it was a Sesame Street book. Some of the Sesame Street characters where trying to go somewhere, I think they were coming back from somewhere and were on their way home. A bridge that they needed to cross was broken and so they needed a place to stay for the night. The only house in the area was this big house that looked kind of like the stereotypical old haunted house. It had something like 12 or 13 rooms that each had different theme. For example the theme of one room was purple, and so just about everything in the room was purple. I remember some of the rooms were purple, pink, red, yellow, and blue. I don't remember the other ones though.

I don't know what did it exactly, but they all got freaked out and left early the next morning when the bridge was fixed.

It should probably be pretty old by now, I was 2 years old when my Grandma got it for me and I'm 16 now. Even when I was a kid it looked something like 5 or 6 years old.

I have no idea why I liked this book as much as I did. Looking back on it now it seems really stupid, but I'd still like to know. Both for the assignment and just for the sake of knowing.

I've looked everywhere for it, but can't seem to find it anywhere. If anyone could help me out at all it would be greatly appreciated. All I really need is the title. :)

  • Is my dog okay? What should I do?

We think he’s a Chion (Chihuahua and Papillon mix), but aren’t 100% on it. He’s somewhere around 10 or 11 years old. He’s had this runny nose lately. I thought at first it could just be some kind of allergy, but I’ve had him for many years and this is the first time it’s ever happened, so now I don’t know what to think.

He’s still eating and drinking normally. And long before I got him he’s always barked and got hyper when someone knocked on the door. He still does this, only he’ll break into sneezing. He’s also been doing some 'reverse sneezing' I think it is, after he gets a drink or just random. He has episodes of them, and it has never happened until now. His mucus was a pale green a few days ago, but as of recently it’s been white and kind of transparent.

I can’t afford to take him to the vet until after Christmas. The only thing that I’ve found that seems to help him is when he gets into what I think is reverse sneezing fits, is to rub his sides and make shhh-ing noises. That seems to calm him down. I rubbed his throat to check signs of a 'collapsing trachea'. I've done it like 10 times and the only thing that happened was that he sneezed once and kept trying to lick my hand. :/

He has a heart murmur, though it’s never been a problem. He’s only ever been sick once before, around early March, but he never had anything like what he has now.

When he gets into these fits, it sounds exactly like this, only he'll sometimes make a big snort at the end.
