New Special Education teacher in NYC?
I will complete a dual Masters degree in Special education/general education K-6 next May 2013 in NYC. Does anyone know what the job market is currently like for new special education teachers? I have a feeling that everyone is now specializing in special education to become more marketable. I really want to work with students who have learning disabilities and emotional disorders because it really is my calling. I know that the hiring freeze is easing and that special education is still listed as a shortage area. However, I have no idea what the actual job market looks like on the field. Are they hiring new graduates for spec education positions? Can anyone give me some feedback on what the market really looks like?

I'm about to start a Dual Masters degree program in Early childhood education (grades 1-6) and Special Education. I know that there was a hiring freeze in New York in 2009, however, on the DOE's website there is no mention of this freeze this year. Will it be easier to get hired in 2013 when I'm done with my studies? The website also states that special education teachers are in demand, but are these at the elementary school level?

I have a 3.4 gpa (double majored and minored) and have always been a B student in sciences. I am also volunteering at my local hospital. What are my chances of getting into the program? It seems that you have to have a 4.0 gpa and As in all pre requisite courses to get in.
4 AnswersHealth Care9 years agoHow can I become hired as a SEO analyst?
A year ago I decided to go into SEO as I was unemployed and was developing an interest in working in a web related role. I have advanced degrees in business but they are from outside the US so it seems as they don't really count to employers. I have really been pushing myself hard, learning to develop sites (ok so they are static , HTML, CSS and some JavaScript, for the time being, but I am aiming to learn to build more dynamic ones by next year) and doing a certificate in web development, in addition to reading like crazy about SEO and practicing on my site. However, I hardly ever get asked to an interview, and if I do (I apply for entry level positions, part time ones etc) it seems that I am not technical enough or not experienced enough, for an entry level job! I am even volunteering. What do I have to study more of or learn to do in order to be taken seriously?
4 AnswersSearch Engine Optimization1 decade agoRelocating to Portland Oregon?
Hi Everyone,
My husband and I are considering where to buy our home and settle down in a few (really few) years time. As you can see we are planners:) A bit of background info to make your answers more targeted. I am an MBA graduate, black and with a lot of experience living abroad, my husband is biracial French (black-white) employed in the IT sector. We are both in our late 20s.We’ll be relocating from NY.
I had long dreamt about living in Seattle because it is environmentally conscious and a bit nerdy:) However, looking at the high home prices in there, I don’t think we’ll be able to buy something that will please us in the next few years.
As a result, we are looking into Portland, Oregon. So here are the questions:
1.Will our kids, who I’m sure will be pretty international in outlook because of their diverse origins, feel at home in Portland?
2.We want to have friends of different races, what are race relations like in Portland? Will our kids be boxed in say, blacks stick with blacks etc (as I observed in Georgia and down south?)
3.What are the employment opportunities like there? I will be working in online marketing and my husband in Java development.
4.This is an odd question, but please don’t misinterpret my intentions, I speak four languages (including Japanese) and I have met people (again in a small town in Georgia who were surprised that someone black can be highly educated), from your experiences are highly educated minorities visibly present in the workforce?
Thanks in advance for your answers. Oh, and before I forget, my husband speaks English but he has a french accent, don’t know if that will work against us in any way…..
1 AnswerPortland1 decade agoShould I get an Associates or Masters Degree in Health Administration?
Hi Guys,
I hope you can help me out on this. Qualified people working in the healthcare field are free to tell it as it is too!
I just finished up an MBA and a Masters in Strategic Marketing, but am moving back to the States next year because as a native English speaker in France (husband is French—but he can make the move with me as he works in software) since 3 years despite my qualifications, I just couldn't advance in my career—after a year and a half I finally landed a position as an intern, but with no job offer in sight
I am aiming to get into the health care sector as it looks promising in terms of careers and career progression. So should I go ahead and do a Masters in Health Administration or just do an Associates since I already have general business competencies? I’ve read that the industry is pretty competitive and that a Masters in Health related studies only qualifies you for an entry level position –which is fine by me! I just want to start working again! Am willing to pay my dues!
I would be doing it online from University of Phoenix(expensive!!!) while I hopefully will have a small job in NY or NJ to pay my bills and my tuition (per credit of course!!)
Do people in the field take an Associates degree seriously? Position I am aiming for first before climbing my way up: Assistant Administrator.
Thanks for your help!

3 AnswersHealth Care1 decade agoNew York or Philadelphia?: Moving to US next year?
Hi Guys,
I hope you can help me out on this one. My husband and I are moving to the US next year June 2010 from Europe. We are a relatively young couple with no kids. My husband is a computer programmer and I have a Masters in marketing.
We are trying to decide where to go. We will have no friends (planning to sublet in the beginning), no car and no US credit history. At the moment we are thinking about somewhere up north, with public transportation with some job opportunities—we’ll take whatever we can get in this recession.
My first idea was NY because of the public transportation, but it appears that there are 19 people per job offer and looking at craigslist I don’t see a lot of offers. Then there is the high cost of living, am so afraid to run out of cash before finding a job!!!
I did some research and Philadelphia is supposed to have cheaper rents. Does anyone know what it is like living/working there? Do u recommend it more than NY during this recession for our backgrounds? I guess I just need ur on the ground experience—don’t hold back tell it as it is, I would really appreciate ur response. By the way, if u have any questions about Europe happy to be at ur disposal. No worries!
