Hi I'm a 20 year old guy and my parents are justifiably uneasy about me going out. The reason is because my major (chemistry) and my intern schedule rarely give me an opportunity to enjoy life at night. As a result I tend to go overboard by their standards. (getting home at3am, noticeably drunk). My mom has reasoned with me by saying that i have to be back at 12:30at the latest and questioning whether I drank or not (which I tell her if I have out of honesty).

But, as a 20 year old in NYC I feel as if I'm missing out on a lot because of this compromise given that people in my age group go out more than every other Saturday night between 9 and 12:30 at night.

I've e tried just going out and texting them later telling them that I'll be late but they get angry. I know I'm over 18 and am legally an adult but, My mother consigns my student loans and she's threatened to refuse to sign them as leverage.

I'm out of ideas. What can I say to my parents to let me go out like a normal young adult in this city?

Hey I'll be going to an after prom party tonight at around midnight, but according to this crime chart the area is less than safe. I'm planning on taking the bus because i don't have a car and it's the city. Since I'm probably just gonna wear my prom suit I feel that I may stand out in the area. (what the hell is a kid in a tux doing around the 'hood' at midnight?) So What would you suggest I do so that nothing happens to me?

Hey I'm a chemistry student at BU, and I saw the research of these other professors over at MIT and harvard. And I really wanted to learn about their research and work in their lab. Is it against policy to ask to work in their labs because I don't attend those schools?

it would be a la can of beer at 5.6% alcohol by volume yields 19.8ml of alcohol, sooo to make a 0.5% we need 4 liters of sprite. its ridiculous, but would that qualify as drinking if you pour a beer into 4 liters of sprite?

I'm a 19 year old guy in college, studying chemistry. I'm not a nerd exactly because I party hard, but I do love the sciences. Now I'm not sure why i haven't been able to get laid, I'm not built well, I'm really skinny, and I wear "hipster" clothes for a paraphrase of my style. Being that I'm that old already, do you think I should just go to a frat and screw the first girl that comes my way? Or be patient and make sure the girl i lose it to is virtually perfect in every way?

personally I'm leaning on the later idea because, that way if i do end up talking about it I won't have two ailments, being 1. lost it inordinately late, 2. she wasn't right for me

Hey I'm a freshman at BU, and I was wondering since there are a bunch of people graduating every year, how can Boston or other cities sustain jobs for all of them. My idea is say 100,000 people graduate from college every year in Boston. i seriously doubt that there are 100,000 jobs created in Boston alone that could compensate college grads appropriately. Not to mention that in boston Alone BU and other graduates have to deal with getting outshone by people from Harvard and MIT. Because of this I feel a little worried about what the future holds for me because I don't want to move away from the city. My only option for now is to continue and get a doctorate degree after I graduate, that way since there are way fewer doctorates than bachelor degree graduates.

An extension of the question above is what happens to people that graduate from even lower ranked city colleges, like community schools? How can they stay in the city if their chances of being selected are beneath that of most 4 year colleges?

After talking to some people I feel like I might have not grown up like normal people. I'm hispanic american, but my parents are emmigrants from Dominican Republic. My dad is a politician in the 'democratic' party of my country and my mother used to be an engineer but is now a special ed teacher. I have 4 sisters one of which is a half sister that I don't talk much to.

My relationship with my dad has always been one of scrutiny. He felt, despite his best efforts that my talents have been wasted. I agree with him to a degree that I didn't pull myself academically until junior year in highschool and since then it's just been easy A's in 'hard' classses. I always liked to experiment with creating things which neither my mother or father were encouraging of. Therefore I got a job as a DJ at school to fund my experiments. (i've everything from making rum, to building guitars, customizing computers.. other thigns that interest me).

My relationship with my mother has been one of trying to disprove her judgements of me. She feels that because I under performed in my first half of highschool that I don't deserve to be in the college that I am in. She urged me to conform to limits people set me, which I strongly disagree. I'm taking in a lot of debt because of the salary I know I'm gonna have when I'm older by going to a good school. while she wanted me to go to a state or city school for free.

I don't like telling either of my parents about my life. despite having lived/living in their house all my life. Not because of privacy or anything, but because I know if I told them they wouldn't want me to do it, for some extraneous reason, and I feel if i didn't tell them I could do what I want and assume that i have a good enough judgement to not do anything illegal.

My relationship, with my sisters was kind of rough. I am somewhat dissapointed in them because I told them to question life more. To think about why they do things and to find better ways of doing things if they truly understand something. They prefer living in the societies ideal, which I totally agree with but disagree when things start seeming illogical. "e.g., they love mac because it's aesthetically pleasing but in for the same amount of money you could get a much better computer and just install mac if it really matters that much".

How do you feel my relationship with my family is different from the norm and how do you think this has impacted my development as a person?

I'm not sure, I feel like I don't belong anywhere. I'm a freshman in college and I seem to just float around at parties by myself. I know typically close to everyone and if not I at least get acquainted with everyone. My difficulty lies is the idea that I haven't been really able to make friends I can have serious conversations with. Which isn't bad at first, but i feel pathetic realizing you don't have anyone you can truly open up to. Coming home I also noticed that all my friends have all had girlfriends, relationships etc. While I have not. Not sure why, I keep up with fashion, and I'm not out of shape, I feel it's because because i keep things too casual and never make a real connection with anyone. But this really bums me out because I want to have meaningful relationships, but I'm discouraged because for some reason I can't muster up the ability to do such a thing.

For those who really don't want to read the above:

1. I feel said because I have not met the same pars as my peers

2. Why?

a. I don't have close friends

b. I haven't been in a relationship

why should I care?

a. all my friends have had them and I wonder why I am delayed

b. I feel that becoming sexaully active a later age puts me at a disadvantage in the futuer

c. I lead an odd life and I haven't met anyone that goes through the same things

2. How can I change all this that I feel is wrong

a. disclaimer, I don't feel bad about the life I lead

b. I feel it's a hindrance to making friends.

(example: my roommate hates me with a passion because I stay up all night doing work instead of sleeping like normal people)

Hey, So I today I went up to a grad student that I met a party and asked him what I should do about research. I asked him because he knows some of the faculty that conducts research at my college. I noticed that the more I asked him about research and how it works he became less friendly. (which i didn't understand maybe he was tense because it wasn't exactly his position to talk about research or give advice not to mention that we had first met in a social setting rather as the traditional teacher/student). After he had changed from a nice person to a really distant person. I tried to lighten the mood by asking about his new years. He said brushed me off and told me to bounce. I did. I later sent him an apology, but i doubt he accepted it. I'm praying he doesn't tell other faculty of the awkward talk we had potentially black balling me from doing research at the University.

Do you think I'm potentially banned from researching?

Hey, So my sister is really unmotivated to do well in math. The reason is b/c its not coming easy to her. And I told her that when something doesn't come easy, and you have to learn it on your own is to pretty much go crazy figuring it out taking literally every approach. However, shes not one to dedicate herself to something like that. And I tried to romanticize math by saying that if you don't spend time getting frustrated and trying to understand and seeing your errors you won't improve. Her problem is that if it gets frustrating she just gives up.

Basically what I'm asking the yahoo community is how can i help my sister go through the frustrations of math. And learn to appreciate the sweet victory of getting the right answer.

Hey I'm a colelge student and I decided that the most effective time to get my work done would be at night. so I've been sleeping from 4pm until midnight and working straight until class. This might seem weird but it worked for about two weeks. now I feel really tired whenever I do it. so much that I can essentially go into a 20 hour sleep cycle ( by going to sleep at 4pm and waking up at midnight working for about 2 hours then going back to sleep until 2pm. This is really bad because I want to take advantage but i lose focus when i do work this late. I've thought of doing things more conventionally by just studying after classes but I end up talking to people on the floor and my friends. so i start homework at ~9pm and go to sleep at around 2pm (and its not even focused work). so how can I become an effective nocturnal person?

Hey I live in a dorm now and I have tons of work so i usually find myself noticing that I haven't showered in 2. 3 days sometimes and I only shower when I go and see people or party. I would also shower but the only decent shower I would use is 4 floors away and the ones are my floor are infamous for absent of the smallest trace of hygiene. but my question is how can I get myself to shower if I really have little incentive to do so?

Calc 1 or any math hw/test grading / Teaching assistant work

Lab Stock room ( not really a fan of this job)

Asking my teachers I have a good relationship with them. (for lab I'm not the most meticulous but that's because I know that won't really affect results)

For math I'm cool with the teacher. And my hw is really clean cut and correct.and I'm no doubt getting an A unless I really really mess up the final

I know professors aren't inclined to give jobs to undergrads especially freshmen,but I have a few okay arguments:

1. I'm doing well in the class

2. I go to office hours and I don't cut class despite how well I'm doing

3. I have 2 years of tutoring experience

4. I work at mission hill as a counselor and coordinator

5. I don't really want to do it for the money, I want to work for the experience. I would work at or below minimum wage.

The lab manua is walking us through titration. And it always say to warm the solution so 50-60 C before titrating, and to titrate the warm solution?

Also, What is a blank titration and how does it work?

Hey so I know this girl and we're friends and stuff. We talk a lot and see each other a few times a week. I'm not sure if there's like sexual tension between us. She does talk to me about how she doesn't hate her ex but finds him annoying. on the flip side she once said that she misses the physical part of their relationship. So I'm thinking she might still be hung up on him.

She once asked me to see some guy with her b/c she doesn't like the idea that whenever she hangs out one on one with a guy, the guy thinks its a date.

Now this is where it gets tricky:

I wanna end up going out with her. She's great and I like her etc.

but she doesn't like getting blatantly hit on etc.

If I went up to her and said " we should totally go out" it would kind of be a contradiction of what she talks to me about. "like guy friends that try to make it more than that"

So my question is:

Would a girl that talks to you and trusts you with different stories about how she hates it when guys are obvious, weird and annoying be receptive of changing the already great friendship into something more?

hey yahoo whats up. So i met this girl and we hung out a lot. like I chilled in her dorm from like 9pm to 3am. And it was great, just fun talking. We traded numbers and we talk, have dinner, and hangout etc. like everyday. I've only known her for like a week. We already have our own inside jokes. Now I'm thinking everything's going great, the right circumstances we could like hookup etc.

But she tells me that she's going to movie night with some fail of a man that's unsuccessfully been hitting on her. I'm like w/e, not really my problem.

She then tells me that she ran into her ex-bf the other day and that she missed "the physical part of their relationship" and that she felt she was better off without him. She also said that she acted different but not in a mean way around him. ( idk, I'm thinking she still wants to get back with her ex) . After she tells me this, she asks me if i want to hangout with her tomorrow, b/c she canceled with that guy that hits on her.

I'm kinda confused. on the spectrum of platonic--> romantic where am I falling? and if i'm platonic how can i shift it to a more romantic situation smoothly?

I was accepted at both Boston University and RPI. BU gave me a crappy financial aid but I went along and accepted their admissions offer because I really wanted to go there. But it wasn't till too late that I relized since my parents refuse to pay for any of my university that I won't be able to pay for BU unless i start pulling 50k a year when i graduate ( which isn't happening since i'll be applying to med school). rensslear gave me a really nice financial aid package i only have to pay 14k a year. which my parents said they would be okay with paying half of. I already Denied RPI's offer and accepted BU's. Would it be possible to try to ask RPI to let me in, and tell BU i can't pay?

Hi. I've been looking for a job for about a month. I'm looking for work that is really early morning that starts between 4-6am. and that I would be done by 12-2pm. What kind of jobs would be great for me? I've looked at starbucks and 24 hours stores but their online application websites are giving me results. I was hoping that maybe a bakery or somewhere similar would hire me. Being from Riverdale, most of these small stores are family owned and I don't know or think that they would hire me. another thing that i'm not sure but maybe hurts my chances at work is that i don't have experience but most jobs that I've seen require at least some experience. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to find work. so yahoo how do u find a summer job in NYC preferably in the morning?

I'm a fast, focused, keen, and innovative when it comes to work as well as life. but I'm clueless on to how I can get someone to hire me.
