What is the price of rice where you live?
I've been used to paying high prices for rice, since living in Japan—$US4-5 per kilogram for the local stuff and a tad more for imports, because we have a 780% Import Duty on foreign rice. When you take out the tax, the price comes out to ¥385 for five kilos, which is less than $US4:00 for the exact same bag of Thai or Indian or Pakistani rice.
In my travels, it seems that the price for 5kg is always less than $US4:00—KL, Singapore, HK, Taiwan, Australia, etc...However, last week, in NYC, I saw Californian rice varieties in 2lb plastic containers (ie, 907g, less than 1kg) for about $7:99-8:99! I nearly fell to the floor. [This was in Manhattan, though...]
What do you think is a fair RETAIL price for a pound or a kilo of rice? Last time I checked, several months ago, the wholesale price was about $80 per ton (or tonne.) Your opinions are welcomed.
