What is the price of rice where you live?
I've been used to paying high prices for rice, since living in Japan—$US4-5 per kilogram for the local stuff and a tad more for imports, because we have a 780% Import Duty on foreign rice. When you take out the tax, the price comes out to ¥385 for five kilos, which is less than $US4:00 for the exact same bag of Thai or Indian or Pakistani rice.
In my travels, it seems that the price for 5kg is always less than $US4:00—KL, Singapore, HK, Taiwan, Australia, etc...However, last week, in NYC, I saw Californian rice varieties in 2lb plastic containers (ie, 907g, less than 1kg) for about $7:99-8:99! I nearly fell to the floor. [This was in Manhattan, though...]
What do you think is a fair RETAIL price for a pound or a kilo of rice? Last time I checked, several months ago, the wholesale price was about $80 per ton (or tonne.) Your opinions are welcomed.
Well, I certainly got some good answers to my question and it's been interesting and helpful to read all the comments. Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and giving me those data and links.
When CostCo Japan opened up, they sold Thai jasmine rice for $US19 per 5kg. I suspect they were stopped from undercutting Japanese rice farmers, as the imports never returned to their shelves. The import duty was only 490% back then, but it's at 780% today.
I've switched to basmati because it has the lowest Glycemic Index figures of all varieties. The cheapest I can get is $US27.00. The "premium" Lal Qilla basmati is $US67. I might try it, just to see if it's that much better, but I won't tell my wife how much it cost! I'm choosing the "best" answer because I was looking at the situation purely as a consumer and had forgotten about the producers who are 'doing it tough' in most countries around the world. No-one else seemed as out

I pay $7 for 5kg bag here in Sydney from Costco. We all want cheap rice and food in general, but I wonder about what the farmers are selling at wholesale.
I've watched documentaries where suppliers haggle with farmers to get the cheapest deal, so that low prices are past on to consumers. It ends up a good deal for consumers but not for the poor farmers who are struggling to survive.
It's hard to say what's fair unless we know what the farmers are getting and how much profit the supermarkets are making.

Well it depends on the quality of rice.
Here in Singapore Basmati rice can range from $16~$26 for a 5 kg bag.
While rice from China or thailand can cost $7 ~ 12 for a 5 kg bag.
So it really depends on what you are looking for.
So; if see something priced not right, move on to a shop where you get it at the price which is right for you.

There is no such thing as "Fair Price" for any commodity including rice. In the case of Japan it sounds there must be strong political forces that precludes importation form continental Asia. In Manhattan, price of rice contains information from the land market in this city. Markets are interrelated, most of the times, in very complex ways. Nevertheless, the best concept of "fair price" I can devise is that of economists' "marginal cost". In Colombia a Kg of 1st class white rice is about US$1.24 and a kg of 2nd class is about US$1.41, but it depends where you buy a bag, i.e., there are sharp differences in pricing when you buy the same rice bag (quality, brand) in a bijou delicatessen than when you buy it at a low income market in the same city. no longer so affected coz i dont consume rather some rice. I in straight forward terms consume 0.5 cup of rice two times an afternoon, each and every now and then no rice in any respect. although if I even have paintings that desires actual strenght i improve the quantity of rice i consume to income sufficient capability.

@Jake
Well, thank you for that update. So it's almost $2 per kilo, now, even in bulk quantities? That's expected, I suppose...
I posted this question several years ago, and I haven't lived in Oz for over 20 years...when I left, Aussie (and all imported rice) cost about AUD$0.82 for a 1kg bag, about $1.40 for 2kg, and under $4 for 5kg. That was a long, long time ago, however.
My many Asian friends in Oz used to buy 50kg drums of rice and that used to cost them about 50¢ per kilogram. How times have changed! Thanks.
