Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

Many people believe that our government should do more to solve our problems. After all, how can one individual create more jobs or make roads safer or improve the schools or help to provide any of the other benefits that we have come to enjoy? And yet expecting that the government—rather than individuals—should always come up with the solutions to society's ills may have made us less self-reliant, undermining our independence and self-sufficiency.

Assignment:

Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Government is a representation of the people, furthermore, is a reflection of how we are working as a community. Most of the people play the victim role, “the government has not helped me, had not, and had not”; however, what have I done? The day that people take responsibility of what can each can do, everything will change.

Are we really interested on helping the needed? I believe there are two kinds of people, the ones that “give” and the ones that “take”. The ones that “give” are people committed to the world, the people that make sure the person next door is doing well, the people who is empowered and do not stop just because there weather is not as they like, people who believe in their selves to make the difference . The ones that “take” are people who only talk about how bad the situation is and do nothing, the person that stop their plans because the weather is too hot or is raining, and the negative leaders. Negative leaders are the ones that instead of make the people believe are the “perfect” judges. “The party was lack of space”, “her wedding dress was awful”, “the government is only stilling and doing nothing”, ”I will not do the teacher’s homework is a waste of time”. Have they done anything to make it better? In my own experience this people are the only ones that NEVER help.

We cannot leave all the job of almost seven thousand million people to a few. I believe we can work as a huge team. Government is the leader and they make us work as a team, however the team is not working as a team. We only have criticized them and are worried about our individual situation. Certainly, first is the own person and then after the team, but we have become “first myself, second myself and third myself”. Naturally, with this “team work” we will not get further than where we are.

Most important I believe in giving solutions. I donate money once in a while to Green peace. Is that enough? Not for me. What is in my hands as individual? Look around, check out around you and select the people, who are doing fine in their life, make them believe we can have a better world and make up your team. Then, help the people who are not fine. When you finish with the people, you can keep helping making your team bigger and raise money to improve schools, plant trees where is needed, clean the streets, . If everyone thinks this way, government would work better and get our lives to whole different and better level. One person can be very powerful and make a change, moreover, let’s just take a look to the past: Gandhi, Mother Teresa, or Pinochet. This people in different ways have been very powerful. Under these conditions, Hitler was a mighty person, the kind of person I would define as a “taker”, because in my opinion he was a negative leader. So I invite people to think deeper. Am I being a “giver” or a “taker”?

Since I was little I used to love food, I used to love the field trips because my mom used to give me for lunch whatever I asked. When I learned to use the VHS, I was around 7 years old, I used to watch and record TV food recepies and I asked my mom to teach me how to cook it. Older, in secondary, I loved organizing school events that matter for my class and all the parties, organize the food, the music and money we needed. Make 40 people party at home a make them feel very comfortable and have the right music and the right food at the right time. My life has been full of all this kind of events, like the one when my middle sister got married last year; she hired five ladies to organized the whole wedding and the music was playing for half an hour and everyone were bored it was a disaster; so, I went to the ladies organized them to start give them the treats we have for the people in the dance floor, I went to a friend I knew she knows the right music and ask her for a list, give it to the DJ, change the music and stand by myself in the dance floor with a song I knew my family loved and start doing the song's popular step and suddenly after a minute 10 people were on the dance floor, after 5 minutes the dance floor were packed. After all that, I spend the night, with the ladies who were suppose to organize the party, organizing them, and I had the time of my life...
