Music suggestions for new program?
Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you had some good skating music suggestions! Right now I am doing Art on Ice (Edvin Marton) and am really sick of it, and I probably will not compete with my current program again. I am looking at a lot of music by Escala (my favorite is Childen). More than anything I would love to skate to Requiem for a Dream/tTower/ Lux Aeterna, but it is way over used. If you know of something similar to that, something dramatic, exciting, and maybe dark, please let me know :) btw My dress is light to dark blue and not sure the level competing but probably 2 min music.
Thanks :)
5 AnswersIce Skating8 years agoSkate issues again-breaking down?
Hey there,
So I bought my first pair of Jackson Freestyles back in late august. They have always hurt when putting pressure on them (soles) and I recently got them stretched, the blade adjusted, and invested in some arch supports since I have wide, flat feet and pronate. The pain went away for about a week and then it came back even worse the past few practices. Not only do they hurt, for the past few weeks I have been having to re-tie my skates since they become loose around the ankles. I have had a hard time landing certain jumps like the flip, lutz, and combos because I feel like there is not enough support. If I tie them really tight, that just creates even more pain. Also, I am have trouble spinning- I have little control on my scratch, little control and slowness on the back, my sit is a disaster and my camel is sloppy and slow. Before each spin was solid, fast and high in revolutions. I am starting the axel soon and I'm not sure how long these skates will last for. I plan on getting Jackson Premieres but I cannot afford them right now, for I was originally saving up to get them at the end of the summer. So I guess my question is, are my skates really dying on me or am I simply going through a learning plateau? Thankss!
3 AnswersIce Skating9 years agoHeart burn or anxiety? or what?
Hi, I've been wondering about this for a long time. When I was about 8, I woke up in the middle of the night with an intense, sharp cramping in the center of my chest. I didn't tell anybody because I thought I was transforming into a fairy( no joke lol). I'm 14 now and I've had this occasionally since then. It comes on suddenly and is a burning in the center of my chest, often traveling to the left side of my chest and I can feel pain in my left upper arm. It is usually excruciating to take deep (or even normal) breaths or to even move a muscle, so I just end up standing there for a few minutes until it passes by. It usually just happens out of no where, like just walking/standing around my house or sitting in school, but I've noticed it can be induced by stress.I get them when I think a lot about them a lot. When a family member died, I had a lot of really bad attacks. During the past few months, I have had a few where the pain was not sharp but dull and lingered for 30-90 minutes. I was convinced these attacks were anxiety attacks until tonight. I had just eaten a medium-sized, average meal and a few minutes after I had sharp pains in my chest and left arm. No stomach pain or gurgling or acid relfex or anything like that, but now I'm thinking it could be heartburn. I have never told a doctor about this and I'm aware that I should.
Thanks!:)
1 AnswerPain & Pain Management9 years agoHelp with loop jump take-off?
Hi guys,
I have been working on my loop, and have been taking off with the inside 3 turn and landing it pretty good. But I am having troubles with the backwards outside edge take-off and not landing it as cleanly. I always land it off ice just fine. Any tips?
Thanks : )
5 AnswersIce Skating9 years agoBack spin help? lost...?
Hey guys :)
So I learned my backspin a month or two ago, and I had it really good. I think the max number of revolutions I've gotten is 6 or 7. The past 3 practices or so, I seem to have lost it. The best I could do is an unbalanced 3 rev. My coach worked some on it with me, but it didn't seem to help. I seem to be on the back of my blade, as it keeps scratching and getting jammed in the ice. I also keep falling backwards. But, I feel like I'm leaning forward. I try really hard t stand straight and keep a solid core.
Thanks :3
5 AnswersIce Skating9 years agoI need help with my spiral?
Okay, so I know that this is asked a million times on here, but I'm gonna ask away :) I also do not remember if I asked a similar question before, sorry if I did....
I took an off-ice class during the summer that included flexibility, strength, yoga etc. I actually ripped my good hamstring ( my main spiral one ) so I had to mainly stretch my other hamstring. The exercises worked out really well for me, as I got my full split and a great spiral after two months of training (almost zero flexibility before this). Then one night I had not warmed up enough (please do not comment on this, it was the stupidest thing I've ever done and I hate myself for it ) and I went down into my full split, held it, and ripp again. This time it was a minor pull, but now I still have 2 ham injuries that I have been going to physical therapy for. My first injury has been healing up really nicely, and it has been very rarely sore. But the past two weeks, it has been more sore. Sore enough that I could not even do a proper lunge, and I could not even do my usual higher than 90' spiral. I am deciding to rest it until my next competition, which is next friday and I need to do a good spiral. I don't know if I should stretch it at all between now and then?
I guess my question is just to see if anyone else on here has ever dealt with hamstring injuries, and if so how long it has taken you to heal, how you dealt with it etc.
Thanks guys :)
2 AnswersIce Skating10 years agowhat type of spin is this?
okay,
so I see a lot of juv and intermediate skaters doing this spin. I never here anyone talking about it and I have no clue what it's called. It is usually followed after a sit spin, where she/he bends over while keeping their legs straight, one slightly out to the side, almost as if to touch their toes. They bend over sort of like this: back---> /| <--- legs. One holds the free foot, some even wrap their arms around their legs. I'm not posting a video because I couldn't find one. So anyone have any ideas?
thanks! :)
5 AnswersIce Skating10 years agoStarting Ice Dance class?
Hey guys, I'm going to be starting Ice Dance classes for 40 minutes every week for 5 weeks. It's for people have barely or never ice danced before. So I guess my question is, what should I expect? What will we learn? How much will I get out of it after 5 weeks? thanks :)
1 AnswerIce Skating10 years agoquestion about curly hair?
Hi guys. I have dark, veryyy curly hair ( I am caucasian ). It is often extremely frizzy and uncontrollable in its natural state. I straighten it way too much and I wanna stop, but I also want to look good, cute and neat. Any products that you recommend for this? As in limiting frizz and keeping shiny curls tamed all day? I have tried many products. I use the garnier sleek and shine system (shamp. and cond.) and the milk/ cream stuff. But it only lasts a few minutes. I have never tried hairspray, any good products? Also, I see a lot of girls with curly hair with almost wet-looking, extremely shiny, frizzless, though "helmet-headed" hair. What type of product do they use?
Thanks!!!!!
OH and btw when I go to the beach my hair is perfectly curly. I know that Moroccan oil has this affect, but its rlllly pricey.
6 AnswersHair10 years agohow would I go about with my pet portraits?
Hi,
I have been doing many portraits of my own animals ( drawing, acrylic, oil, pastel, and charcoal ) and I have been seriously starting a pet portrait business. I'm not being conceited or anything but my work would be sell-able ( as in it is not bad at all ). How would I advertise, and what is a good price range? I have exhibited at art stores before ( for exhibitions/contests ). I really want to make some money ( that's not the whole point of doing this, I love art ) by November. Would this be possible? Also I live in Middlesex county, Massachusetts.
Thanks for your help :)
1 AnswerPainting10 years agoHow long will it take to get back?
Hi guys,
So during the summer I either tor/ pulled my left hamstring. I did not get it looked at until last week, and I am now going to physical therapy twice per week. This injury is almost healed, and when it was really bothering me it only hurt to do spirals and lunges. I did lose some flexibility and it was my good spiral leg. After this, I started stretching my other leg a lot. I am able to do a full split on that side, and have been able to for a little over a month now. I ALWAYS warm up and do more minor stretches before going into splits, and it never hurts. But this Friday ( like 3 or 4 days ago, today's Monday ) I warmed up and everything and when I went down to the floor, I heard/ felt a grinding, ripping sensation. It hurt a lot and I could barely put any weight on the leg. It has hurt since then, especially while running ( I have tried just to test ) sitting, reaching to the floor ( as if to tie a shoe ) going up stairs, etc. I tried skating last night because I had synchro practice, but it was painful just to skate around the rink. Back crossovers hurt a lot so I got off the ice after a few minutes. I had physical therapy today and I explained the new situation. The PTist said that it was a 1/3 upper hamstring pull ( I thought I ripped a ligament or something, so I'm relieved ) but I would have to wait at least 1 or 2 weeks before I skate again.
So, if it were to take longer, would I have to quit the synchro team? Also I have my first competition ( I only have the song picked out, I was supposed to start working on the program this Thursday ), should I forget about that too? I know it is going to take a long time to fully heal, let alone do a spiral without cringing. Will all of the flexibility training I worked hard at go to waste, and will I lose all of my flexibility? Should I just quit now? Has this happened to anyone before?
Thanks for listening to my blabbering :)
1 AnswerIce Skating10 years agoHaving a lot of trouble with my spins?
Hiya :)
About a month ago I was doing really good scratch spins, with some back and sit spins. I was getting around 13-14 revolutions on the scratch, which is really good for me because I am a generally awful spinner and could barely do a solid one-foot spin in June. My technique was right and I had worked for a long time on it with my coach. Then my old skates totally broke down ( I had bought them a month before used). I bought new ones but couldn't use them for another week and a half because i went on vacation. They are now breaking in pretty good and things are coming back to me, and the "breaking in pain" went away, and I am able to bend my knees more. But the one thing that is not coming back are the spins. I can barely do a simple 2-foot spin!! My scratch ENTRY is fine, but I can barely hold an open spin for more than a couple revolutions before loosing balance. a third of the time I fall. Also as I spin, the pick scratches the ice ( which didn't happen before, I try not to lean forward). So is it the new skates and do I have to wait for them to totally brake in? Or is it me? I have a private tomorrow afternoon so I may update depending on what my coach says. Would it help to practice off ice, like on a spinner? My coach said that she hated hers and now my mom won't let me get one (even the different brand so much!!! <33
Thankyou so muchh!! <33
6 AnswersIce Skating10 years agoWhat should I do? (Injury, and tryouts)?
Ok, so tomorrow I have a long, 7 hour day of figure skating camp, including lots off off-ice work. 2 weeks ago, we were showed soo many stretches for splits and such (I had already been working on them, this was like x3 though), and continued over-working on them when I got home. Now I regret that I did this stupid action, because I pulled a muscle in my left thigh. It is feeling sooo much better, as it hurt to walk a week ago, but I am still having a hard time with spirals and lunges. I took a break from those, but today I decided to try them again. When doing my spiral, it was barely painful but I still had a hard time lifting it to a 90' angle (I could get above before this happened :/ ). Instead of continuing I worked on my bad-but-physically okay side. Lunges- forget it.
The dilemma is that after camp, I am trying out for the synchro team, and spirals and lunges are a huge part. Should I just explain to the team coach about my issues? Also, how long do you think it could take for my hip to completely heal?
thx :)
5 AnswersIce Skating10 years agoAre these Realistic goals?
Hi :) I know that you guys don't like these types of questions, but I'm just curious how far you guys think I can get in this sport.
I am in the USFSA program. I restarted skating this February ( I got to basic 3 two years ago), and it took me a few months to actually get comfortable. I had a group show in April, which required the learning of spirals and lunges when I was still stuck in basic 3. I could not do either until the night AFTER the show, when I started getting comfortable on the ice.
I honestly don't even know what level I am. The last one I passed was basic 3 ( I passed it twice -.-) back in May, but I haven't tested since then because the rink I have membership with closed for the summer in mid-April, and I have been at a different rink. I have been doing a lot of private lessons, practices 4 or 5 days per week, plus camp once or twice per week. I currently have all of the elements from basic 4, 5, and 6. The only thing I haven't worked on in basic 7 is the ballet jump, and I am not strong on the mohawks yet. For basic 8, I have not yet tried the mohawk sequence, and I have no idea what a Mazurka is. I can only keep the crossed-leg position on the upright spin for about 2 revolutions. My moving inside 3-turn definetly needs improvement.
I'll be 14 next month, and once school starts ( going into highschool, so I'll be busy with studying), I'll hopefully get to skate 3 times per week. My home skating club has such limited ice time, due to hockey : tuesday night for an hour, saturday afternoon for an hour and sunday morning for an hour. I will rarely skate on saturdays because I see my dad two saturdays per month, and he doesn't want to waste his only time with me watching me skate at a low level. There is 2 hour public skate on sunday, when it is the most crowded. I might be able to get some walk-on times at another rink during the week, I'm not sure yet.
Anyway, thank you for listening ( well, reading lol ) to my blabbering:) My original goal for this year was to pass basic 8 by the end of the year. Now, I would really like to pass it within the next couple months. I want to pass it by the end of the summer, but I know that is not very rational. Also, do you think it is possible to pass Freeskate 6 ever and get into further levels (like landing doubles etc.?) If so, what is the average range that one can get through Freeskate 1-6? What are some other good goals I can set for myself? Do you think I'll ever be able to compete outside of basic skill competitions? ( Like the New England regionals, no further than that, I am not going to the Olympics duh :P)
Again, I know that you guys cannot tell me where I will be. I just sortof want to know if it is possible within the next couple years.
ThankYou sooooooooo much :)
5 AnswersIce Skating10 years agofigure skates? (jackson)?
Today I just got my THIRD pair of skates THIS year.
I have had sparkling new size 7 Jackson Mystiques for about a month now, and they have been very comfortable, and i had no trouble breaking them in. Today when I went for a practice skate, and the bottoms hurt for about a half an hour, which has NEVER happened in these skates. It happened in my last ones (same except size 6) as I was outgrowing them. When ever I put the smallest bit of pressure/ weight on my feet, the pain was worse. Also, I was pronating a lot. The last time this happened was 2 years ago, during the first few weeks of the learn to skate program ( just beginning.)
I am currently between a basic 5 and 6. Today was not a very pleasant skating experience ( I know, there are off-days but something was just not right.) The thing is, I skated 2 days ago and everything was fine. They were laced good, too, the same as always. Why would this happen?
I brought my skates to the local skate shop. The owner tried and suggested a lot (stretching them, removing the insole padding ( extra ), as well as explaining what was probably happening ). He finally resulted into selling me a used pair of Jackson Freestyles, saying that they would give me more support. He also adjusted the blade to help with the pronating. He told me to try them out, and if they didn't work out, I would have my old skates back and maybe stretch them.
Do you think that these will really help? Was it even necessary to upgrade now? He said that I might as well.
Also, these skates smell badly lol. (of course, they're used) Should I air them out or something?
thxx :)
5 AnswersIce Skating10 years agoskatefit and goal questions?
Hiya :)
So, for the past few weeks my skating has been slightly declining. My skates hurt a lot on the bottom for about a half an hour, but then I was fine. Next time, It took and hour. I went for a public skate tonight, the pain started after about 3 minutes on the ice, and didn't dissipate for an hour, and even then it still hurt a little. This time it hurt everywhere, and it was unbearable at first. I had to leave early because I kept loosing balance and falling, and my feet were really uncomfortable. This has never happened before and I've only had the skates since January or February, but since I'm 13 I'm clearly still growing. Anyways when I took the skates off ( I wear skinny socks) there were markings left on my skin from the skates. They are clearly getting too small. The thing is that I brought them into the skate shop about a week ago and the manager said that I had plenty of room but needed insoles.
I am going back on tuesday ( closed sunday and monday) and either getting them stretched or buying new skates. I guess I'l just see how that goes. I have a lesson on thursday and I really don't want to miss it since I haven't had a lesson in a couple weeks ( that rink has been closed, I've been public skating.) I'm somewhere in between a basic 4 and 6 now ( i'll be in a basic 5 class, but I'm solid in some basic 6 elements but still missing the 3-turn) and if I were to but new boots, which type should I get? I have the Jackson Mystiques now, and I saw some sites that said Jackson Classiques were good for basic 4- fs2 or something like that. I'll be skating 2 or 3 times per week in the summer and fall and hopefully progressing quickishly lol.
That was my other question- progression. I started skating when I was 11 and skipped last year, so I had basically started over this year (Jan. or Feb). The only thing missing from basic 4 is the 3-turn, which was never even brought up in the basic 4 class ( kindof my fault lol I should have asked. maybe the instuctor didn;t think I was ready?) I'll be in a basic 5 class, and I've worked a little on backward crossovers, side toe hops, back edges and one-foot spins. I had to do a show ( synchro ) earlier and had to learn lunges ( okay), spirals (good) and bunnyhops ( not good but not bad). Anywho, do you think that I might be able to get at least to freestyle 1 next year? Also, what about future competing? Even just local basic skills competitions? I would love to try at the New England regionals but I don't really see that happening... I'm kind of just dreaming away here lol :P
Thankyou for listening to my babbling :)
1 AnswerIce Skating1 decade agotree is dying of inchworms?
yupp.
So we have a 40 or 50 year old maple tree in northeastern US. All of its leaves had sprouted, and were nice and green. But a few days later, the the leaves developed the typical eaten holes in the leaves. No big deal, every tree has bugs. BUT, about only one week later, the tree was completely defoliated. And I mean there was not a speck of one leaf anywhere on the tree, like in the winter. The only sight of green were the inchworms themselves, which, a few days before, were hanging by their silk from the branches, in an unbelievable amount, like christmas tree ornaments x10. Today, the trunk was inundated in inchworms- there must have been hundreds. We hosed some of them off today.
thanks!
1 AnswerGarden & Landscape1 decade agois this a normal mutation?

I live in Massachsetts, US.

1 AnswerZoology1 decade agowhen will we learn this?
Hiya :)
So I'm still kindof beginnerish. We're working on bunnyhops, spirals, lunges and forward crossovers now and I can do all of them... and I'm really anxious to get further lol :) So, when do you think we will start backward crossovers (we already did backward pumps) and waltzjumps? I suppose I should ask next class but I'm just being curious.
Thanks!
5 AnswersIce Skating1 decade agoWhats a good place to find a formal dress?
Alright, so everything end of the year is coming up. Formal dance, graduation, etc...and that means dressing right. What are some good places that have good dresses and are somewhat inexpensive? I know Macy's is good. I'm looking for a short, strapless dress that has forms of black, purple, dark blue or dark red. Possible rose designs... I'd probably be a size 6 or somewhere around that.
thanks :)
