  • What should be the resistance of an intact line fuse, 15A, 250V, 326?

The wife overused the microwave, and everything went dead on it. I was hoping for a bad fuse in the microwave since that should be an easy, cheap, quick fix. I pulled the line fuse and tested it with the multitester, and it showed infinite resistance. I'm figuring the resistance of the fuse should be 1.0 ohm or less, maybe at most 10 ohms, but nowhere near 1k+ ohms the meter reads (needle doesn't move and it works). Can an EE confirm? Thanks!

  • Is Flying Pig a Boston qualifier this year?

How can I find out for sure? I can't find it anywhere on their website, so please don't suggest looking there unless you know exactly where it is and can tell me how to navigate to it.

  • Why do farmers take federally subsidized crop insurance but fight fed subs health insurance for the rest of us?

Seems a bit like hypocrisy to me. I was raised on a farm, so don't feed me the stuff about how hard they work. Everything's done from behind a steering wheel now, even baling hay and picking up rocks. And don't give me the boo-hoo about how hard it is to make a living, either. The little guys have almost all been driven out (like my family was) and the guys that are farming over 1000 acres are sitting on millions of dollars. I'll trade places with those guys any day.

  • On an airliner, is the luggage compartment pressurized or heated?

My racing bike came back from Switzerland with some cracks in the paint. Since an airplane is a tube, I would think the luggage compartment would be pressurized, the whole fuselage pressurized. But I bet it's not heated. It gets below -40 on that transatlantic flight, maybe that made the paint cracks?

  • Embarassing situation, she tries to flirt with me right in front of her husband. What to do?

I actually feel bad for the guy.

He seems nice, he's always at work with her so I think he's unemployed. They both seem to be in their early 20's. She works as a lifeguard at the lake. He is always there with her while she is at work, and he watches her like a hawk, and I think with good reason. She's on the borderline of hottie, you can tell that when she was in school a few years and 20 pounds ago she was probably getting a lot of guy attention.

Me: I'm a triathlete, and I go to the lake to get in swim practice. Sometimes I ride my triathlon bike there or run during the breaks. I am quite a bit older than they are, they probably don't realize that, but I look their age and my physique is better than her husband's. Quite frankly, it's clear he doesn't work out to the extent I do. Probably because he always has to be watching over her.

Problem is, she practically throws herself at me right in front of her husband. Today she was asking me how far I ride my bike to get there and telling me inappropriate things like "you really have balls" for doing triathlon training. I feel bad for the husband, I'm not welcoming the behavior and I can tell he's at his wit's end. The last time I came to the lake she came running up the beach to talk to me like she was a 7th grader in heat. He came loping up behind. It was awkward.

Anyway, this is the only lake big enough in the area for me to swim at. I don't have other swim options.

I try to basically let the attention fly by and act like I don't get it or see what she's up to. But her behavior is getting more outrageous each time I come to the lake. I think this causes friction between them and I don't want to be a problem. Her behavior would be out of line if he wasn't around. With him right there it's ridiculous. Seeing as I don't have other swim options, what should I do or say?

  • What was the name of the movie on sundance channel yesterday?

One of the 2 main characters was an orthodox Jew named Rachel, and the other was a muslim woman. They both were 4th grade teachers and became friends. Cheesy story, but it was still charming.

  • Is marijuana legal in Switzerland? Prostitution?

I'm going to Switzerland this summer, and a coworker was teasing me about all the stuff I'd be trying over there. Out of curiosity, what's perfectly legal there that tends to be illegal here? I think my coworker has Switzerland confused with Holland.

  • Swimmers or Ironman triathletes: Is there a way to help the goggles make a better seal with my eyes?

I need the things to not leak for an extended period of time, because an Ironman swim can take over 90 minutes to complete. I've thought about trying to put a thin film of Vaseline or Bag Balm around my eye and on the goggle rim to see if that will improve the seal. What will work AND not irritate my eye? Would paraffin work if those two get too slimy?

  • On the college application essay, should the prospective student be expected to spell "college" correctly?

If I was on the acceptance committee, those applications would go directly to the recycle bin. I'm not a spelling Nazi, really, but if you can't even spell "college" right, then maybe you don't belong. You should at least know where you're going, right?

  • Will I get a warm welcome in Switzerland or are they stuffy and rude? Will they be friendly to travelers?

    Details:

    1) I will be in Switzerland to do an Ironman triathlon; here in the US people treat you really well at an Ironman event just because you are an athlete. Will it be similar there?

    2) I will mostly be in Zurich. Maybe also Basel for a day trip to cycle into Germany to swim and a day trip to cycle from Visp to Zermatt. I anticipate these areas may have different sorts of people.

    3) I speak no French and passable German. I am willing to approach people with questions in German. I will be using the trains and bicycle lanes in street traffic.

    4) I have a tendency to grab up rude people and beat the $H!+ out of them if they decide to be rude punks for no good reason. I treat people kindly and with respect unless they give me a reason not to. So I'd like to know where to avoid. No way I could visit Paris.

  • What's a clever thing to say to old women who stare at me at the pool?

Please think of a snappy statement I can make to them based in the following?

I am a triathlete, and I go to the YMCA to train. If I have to get in the pool when the old women are in there doing their geriatric classes, it's not that they peek. They are unbelievably rude. They will ALL stop what they are doing, and stare at me until I get in the water. If I get out of the pool while they're there, they ALL stop what they are doing and stare at me until I'm back in the locker room. It's not just rude, and annoying, it's gross. I was raised not to stare, and here where I live now old people stare. But it's especially creepy at the pool.

The young women and girls might peek or might not pay attention at all to me. These aren't cougars, I mean they're not far from geriatric diapers and oatmeal. Gross!

What can I say that is rude enough but not so rude to get me in trouble?

  • Why is a man who has raised his kids considered evil to divorce his wife?

Let's consider Man A and Man B. Man A divorces his wife of 5 years with kids aged 1 and 3 years. Man B raises his kids and provides for his family and then divorces his wife of 22 years with kids aged 18 and 20. When Man A gets a divorce it is considered unfortunate in the community, but Man B who stuck it out and raised his kids and then divorces his wife is reviled in the community. Isn't the fact that Man B was there for his kids and helped and supported them to adulthood worth merit? Why is he considered so villainous? How is what he did more objectionable than what Man A did in bailing up front? Why is Man B considered to be such a traitor?

  • Will a water soluble protein with a mass of 30,000 or so stay in the supernatant when centrifuged at 1760rpm?

This is plant protein. Here's my plan:

Crush some plant material with mortar and pestle.

Put the plant material in the blender with a bit of water. Blend on high 30 seconds.

Freeze slowly to break up remaining cell walls to release cell contents.

Thaw and centrifuge at 1760 for 5 minutes. Recover the supernatant and discard the solids.

Freeze dry the supernatant to recover dry plant proteins, including ones in the 30,000 range.

Is there anything in my procedure which will destroy the proteins or which will not work?

  • What is the large building lit green at night on 23 at Ann Arbor?

I was by there last night and it's a huge building lit green with long green tubular lights. Very huge building, like a university building or a Ford or GM plant. Large parking lot, but empty. I don't think it's one of the campus buildings, but I don't know for sure. I was just curious what it was, it would be helpful to know so in the future if one of my passengers ask. If you're from Ann Arbor area, you've seen it, can't miss it. The building is East of Route 23 and runs roughly parallel to the highway. Who knows what building it is?
