  • Need Advice - please!?

Just need a sounding board - feeling a bit lost - posted this earlier but only got one reply -

Background - My first marriage failed badly, the last straw was when she became pregnant with another man's child. I was devistated, but after a long time moved on remarried and have been happily married ever since. This was in the early 90's.

Fast Forward to 2003 - she found me via email and we chatted back and forth for a few months, then she dropped a bombshell that the child now 11 years old may be mine. There is a remote chance that this is correct, but so far no paternity test has been done. We live several states away from eachother now and communication has been sporatic and sometimes not friendly.

The child is now almost 16 and is having issues - I have spoken with him via email a few times and on the phone maybe a dozen times. I am reluctant to try to bond due to distance and since paternity hasn't been established I have fears that should I try to become a part of his life it may all be for nothing should he be proven to not be mine.

My ex has told me on several occasions that she is filing paperwork with the state to get child support - I have been honest and forthcoming with contact information but over the last five or six years have got nothing from any state to establish paternity or start child support.

She calls me out of the blue over the weekend and says he is in a psychward because he feels that he doesn't know his father, and I am just so damn lost.

I should add that my wife knows everything and is supportive of any choice I make. My children with my wife (current) don't know, but as they are young I felt that telling them something like this might not be the best idea until I know for sure.

I would love to do a paternity test, however most cost $100 - $200 and for results to be court admissible, a chain of sample custody and proof of identity is required. I have considered this, just for my own peace of mind.

I guess I just want some opinions on what I should do.

  • Welding Concern on the frame of a Motorcycle?

A couple weeks back I hit a "gremlin" in the road, I use the term gremlin as I didn't see what I hit and could not locate it after the fact. whatever it was it shredded the rear tire and scraped up the underneath of the bike. Just of the tire fixed, but the shop won't weld on the frame some an undisclosed reason (I asked they couldn't give me a good answer).

Anyway - I need to get a pin (spring attachment area) welded to the frame to hold the end of the spring that connects the jiffy stand (kickstand) to the frame. So the question is:

When welding on a bike is it better to use oxy acetylene or ARC (TIG/MIG) welding - I am curious because I have never welded on a motorcycle before and I am concerned that an ARC welder might mess up the electronics - I have a friend who can do both but I wondered has anyone ever done this - any suggestions will help -

  • Harley Davidson Sportsters Jiffy Stand?

Hit a road gremlin that took out the back tire and scraped up the underside of my bike - I am fine considering taking it into a shop to look at the rim just as a precaution, but the jiffy stand I should be able to do myself.

The bike is a 2003 HD Sportster - the jiffy stand got a bit scraped up and won't spring back into place. I got a new spring for it but it is still not working the way it should. The manual I have doesn't give a good diagram and I have searched on-line for a picture but can't locate one. Anyone out there with a similar bike be able to take a picture of the jiffy stand and specifically the spring and let me know. Any other suggestions or links would also be helpful.

  • McCain at Sturgis? Does this change your opinion of him?

    http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/08/...

Well isn't that unique? I would love to hear your thoughts on this? Is he trying to appeal to bikers in general or just the Harley crowd? If you are a sport bike rider and Harley hater, does this change your perception of McCain as a presidential candidate?

  • Maytag Refrigerator?

I have a Maytag Ice2O french door bottom freezer/refrigerator. The front panel lights are all blinking and the ice dispensor exit is opening and closing. It stopped for a bit and now wont dispense ice or water. The filter is less than three months old (changed in early June). The water pressure is fine in the back, nothing else seams to be wrong.

I have sent an email to maytag, but it may take four or five days to get an answer. If anyone knows what might be going on or has a suggestions please let me know. When it starts doing it again I am going to take video of it.

  • 2003 H D Sportster 883XL, running sluggish better to clean or get better carbs?

It is right now all stock with no modifications - I am slightly mechanical so if cleaning is an option and it is easy to do I may give it a try - or should I replace with a better carb (screeming eagle or simlar)?
