  • Can someone interpret this dream for me?

I had a dream that I came out of the closet and my family and everyone was really supportive. That's pretty much it.

  • Please read and critique?

I posted this a few days ago, but I added more to it. I would also like to somehow note my respect for other philosophers but I don't know how to begin...

    I would appreciate harsh critique!

A meaningful philosophy should be one whose objective is to edify its pupils. It should be uplifting, inspiring, and applicable to daily life.

Although I am not well-versed in philosophy, as I am only in the rudimentary stage of my education, I have found that, at least for myself, the most useful philosophies have come from Philosophers such as Lao-Tzu, Buddha, and Socrates, just to name a few. Their wisdom has proven to withstand the test of time; they were true ‘lovers of wisdom’. They asked great questions and provided powerful answers.

This spiritual philosophy has affected how I look at every aspect of life. Isn’t that how it should to be? Every day that I wake up is a new opportunity to improve myself, to apply the teachings of these great teachers. I look at each day as ‘Life practice’, a fresh opportunity to cultivate a new quality in myself, until it becomes my true nature; Qualities such as patience, kindness, forgiveness, non-judgment, etc. It’s a noble battle indeed. What philosophy could be more meaningful than those of self-improvement? Life is, as Henry David Thoreau put it, “An experiment untried by me.” There are far too many complacent souls who wander the earth like robots programmed by society, myself included. After all, unlearning 20 years of programming is no easy task.

In this vast universe, on this dust speck of a planet, the minds of its people become encapsulated by false beliefs thus making them blind to the truth that surrounds them. Isn’t it funny how most every human being feels that the universe revolves around him? Who is right? All of them? None of them? What makes us so selfish? Are we born with it, or is it learned? Who is the teacher, and how can we stop him? With all of the wise teachers throughout history, why does evil prevail? History has repeated itself time and time again; yet, we continue to make the same mistakes. As for me, with hard work and determination, I hope to escape these patterns by applying their wisdom to my every day life:

In the ‘Tao Te Ching’, Lao-Tzu said, “Learning consists of daily accumulating; the practice of Tao consists in daily diminishing. Keep on diminishing and diminishing, until you reach the state of non-ado. Non-ado, and yet nothing is left undone. To win the world, one must renounce all. If one still has private ends to serve, one will never be able to win the world.” Before diminishing is even possible, however, one must first be able to let go of what is being diminished. Otherwise, you will be worse off than when you started. Letting go is a great feeling, but only if you are willing and ready.

We are not just talking about getting rid of things, but rather, more importantly, we are talking about our attachment to things, and not just our attachment to things, but people, thoughts, ideas, emotions… even our own identities that we have worked so hard on. And as a result of getting rid of said attachments, we are free of desires, we are free of “private ends to serve”, as Lao-Tzu put it. We can genuinely do for other people, as we have no ulterior motives. That, in and of itself could abolish selfishness. How much better would this world be if altruism were a common quality shared among all people?

Lao-Tzu also speaks very highly of virtue. He mentions it many times in the ‘Tao Te Ching’, he speaks of it as though it were a kind of shield, protecting you from the dangers and evils of the world. Speaking of virtue, it reads, “Wasps and poisonous serpents do not sting it, nor fierce beasts seize it, nor birds of prey maul it. Its bones are tender, its sinews soft, but its grip is firm.”

“Know thyself”, said Socrates. Know thyself; what does he mean? He also believed that the life of your soul is more important than the life of your body and that ignorance is the root of all evil, or, more precisely, no one knowingly does evil. Perhaps understanding what he means by “know thyself”, we could further understand the other two concepts. I do not claim to know exactly what Socrates meant, however, I do have my own personal interpretation; understanding who we are, in turn, gives us a better understanding of good and evil. So, who are we? We are, in essence, our “soul”, and what exactly is the soul? Our conscious awareness. Not necessarily our thoughts and desires, but the awareness behind our thoughts and desires. If we fail to recognize this awareness, then we fail to recognize many things. We cannot discern between good and evil; therefore, if we do that which is looked upon as evil, we are doing so unknowingly. On the other hand, if we are in alignment with this awareness, we not only wouldn’t, but we couldn’t do that which is harmful to our souls, and to the souls of others.

I believe that us people do the best we can. We do what we

  • Ever since I added Windows to my Macbook it's been acting weird...?

Okay, so I attempted to add Windows to my Macbook, I partitioned my hard drive and everything. While it was installing, my computer froze so I let it sit there for a little hoping it would eventually work, but then I got impatient and just reset my computer. Windows was only partially installed so I just decided to restore my hard drive back to the way it was originally. Now when I turn on my computer I have to hold down the option button, otherwise I will be directed to a black page that says to insert some kind of disk. It has also been freezing up, or sometimes when I close it (my macbook), it wont start back up again when I open it! I am getting really frustrated!

How can I get it back to normal???
