I am a 30 year old male, unmarried, with no children. I intend to remain unmarried and without children. I came to Yahoo Answers because I was interested in why adoption costs so much. Though I have no intention of adopting, I am a supporter of adoption. I care about children and feel that someone who cares about children can reasonably support adoption, even though it's not a perfect solution. My personal experience with kids is from working with my church's teens and younger kids, but my heart goes out especially to children in third world countries who struggle just to survive. I believe that I am best suited to help children by assisting parents in such places with the care of their children by providing monetary assistance instead of parenting personally. My hope is to use business skills acquired through education and work experience to also be able to help provide parents in impoverished areas with training and/or employment.

  • Would it be better if...?

instead of getting an adopted child to call you mom and dad, you fully disclosed the situation from the beginning? Something to the extent of "We're not your mom and dad, but we decided to love you and care for you as though we were. You're free to call us Jack and Sally"? Not necessarily that exact quote, but you get the idea.

I assume there are likely different answers for different ages of children. All opinions are welcome, but I'm most interested in opinions of those who are critical of adoption.

  • What percentage of those who adopt are unable to have their own biological children?

I have searched for this information and cannot find it on any scale. Best answers have links. :)

  • Have the reasons for abortion changed in the last 20 years?

"Adoption doesn't prevent abortion because abortion is all about not wanting to be pregnant and not about not wanting a baby."

I was skeptical about this line because it seemed unlikely to me that no one ever got an abortion for a reason other than avoiding continued pregnancy. Surely some people got abortions because they didn't want kids!

So I looked for surveys where they ask women who got abortions why they did it. The only one I found was about 20 years old though.

These were the top 3 reasons listed for abortion:

    1. Concern about how having a baby could change her life.

    2. Can't afford a baby now.

    3. Problems with relationship or desire to avoid single parenthood.

All these problems are solvable by placing for adoption? You have to go down into the less frequent problems to run into the ones that it takes abortion to solve. So what's the deal?
