  • Running away to be a writer?

My parents, mentors, teachers, coaches, and siblings are all think highly of me because of my accomplishments.

If I decide to attend college, then I can accept the full tuition scholarships they are offering me.

If I decide to go to the military, then I will get some of the best jobs no matter which branch I choose. Plus, they can help pay for school, housing and other expenses.

However...I was thinking lately of just running away and becoming a writer...

I know, it's so vain of me to think in such a way when so many others would be so happy to be in my position. It would be unfair to them if I just threw it all away.

But...it's just so confusing right now...my dad is saying that college loans will make me work for someone else my whole life because I can't pay it off. The military route would be better, he says, because everything would be taken care of. My mom says that paying off those loans are easy...

Ik that they both care about me, but I just can't decide.

  • College, military, or running away?

To just make it short my mom wants me to go to college and my dad wants me to go to the military. Me? I don't really know.

That's where you get to help decide my life! :D

I got half-full tuition scholarships to some selective universities. I'm still waiting on those that offer full ride.

If I take this route, then I might still have to take out loans and my dad doesn't really like that.

Lots of recruiters want me and say that I qualify for almost any job I want in the military. I'm also a good candidate for officer ship if I meet all the requirements. My dad and the recruiter says that if I go to nuke school, then I'll get a really big bonus. Plus, they can help me get through school. I just have to serve a few years.

My mom said that paying off college loans is fast because I'll be earning a lot after.

My dad says to take the military route so that everything is free as long as I keep being at the top.

    What to do?

    A.) college

    B.) military

C.) Run away. Be a writer.

  • College, military, or running away?

Alright, it's the time that I finally get closer to starting my life.

I got scholarships to universities and some of them have good names while others gave pretty good scholarships that covered half to even full tuition.

My mom really wants me to attend college.

However, my dad says that I should join the Air Force or the navy because even with my scholarships, unless I hopefully get a full ride, I will still have to take out loans. He says that the benefits in the military include having them help with college provided that I serve for some years depending on which plan I decide.

So here I am, vacillating between these two decisions.

Are college loans really that hard to pay? Will I be spending my whole life essentially working for someone else?

Will I be better off going straight to the military? My scores make me a good candidate for Nuke school and officer training. However, I also won presidential scholarships.

Maybe I should just run away and be a writer...

  • Is the world worth it?

We're all going to die someday.

The world is full of pain and suffering.

The world is full of goodness and happiness.

    Not all people are suffering.

    Not all people are happy.

Lots of people believe we should be equal.

Equality, according to many, is a good thing.

In life, many are not equal.

    In death, everyone is equal.

It's going to happen to us all someday.

Why not make it happen to us all at once?

    Nuclear war?

    Who's with me?

  • About Christianity and self defense?

I plan to practice rural medicine in the near future.

However, I really want to provide my services to places where it's very dangerous/people don't get a lot of help. I want to stick to my principles as much as possible. I want to avoid fighting. However, if I just let people mutilate my body, then I won't be able to help others as much as I would like to.

How far should I go when defending myself? Maim the person? Threaten them? There's the potential that they will come back with more reinforcements for revenge etc. so what is the best course of action?

  • Question about bokken or katana training?

First of all, I want to establish that I'm still new to this martial art so I don't know a lot. Please excuse my ignorance.

I'm saving up for a functional katana, but I decided that it would be better if I just trained first on how to use one before purchasing a live blade or else I would kill myself.

So now I'm looking for a bokken or those wooden training swords so that I can work first on my form. Would it be best to move to Japan and learn from a master there on how to wield a sword? I'm kind of worried because they might discriminate against me (I'm Filipino--though my last name is Tamayo so I might be able to say I have Japanese blood lol). But I'm just kinda fearful because they might only want to train those who have Samurai ancestors and not outsiders. If so, are there a lot of teachers in the US?

Also, if I do get to the point where I'm skilled enough to wield a live blade, would it be possible to get an authentic one? Would Japan recall them and claim them as national treasures/property? Would I have to go to auctions and stuff? I know this is highly improbable, but are there any Japanese smiths willing to craft one? I know it's more about pride than money so what should I do to prove myself?

These are just all hypothetical, but it would be nice to know so that I can decide if I would want to pursue this seriously.

Thank you all for your input!

  • Question for writers?

When writing a novel, do we need to write in one voice only and stick with it the whole way through or can we switch it up from time to time to give better perspective (telling a memory in 1st person but switching back to 3rd person after the memory is told)

    e.g.

I could remember the fires burning all around me as my mother and I ran far away from the chaos--and into the darkness of the forest. etc.

He woke up gasping for air--sweat covering him, his wet hair clinging to his skin. He slid off the bed and walked with heavy feet to the bathroom, leaning against the sink. etc.

First, I told the memory/dream in 1st person. But then as soon as he wakes up I switch to 3rd person. Can writers do that? Or is it an (un)written rule that one should only stick to one narrative perspective?

  • What do Japanese gals look for ini a guy?

I'm interested in Japanese culture; particularly from a teen's point of view. Could someone who thinks they have enough experience with Japanese culture tell me what traits do Japanese gals look for in a partner?

Are there certain races that Japanese gals are attracted to? Refrain from?

How big do you think are gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/pan/etc. communities in Japan?

I'm looking for a stereotypical answer but personal views are good as well

  • A good term to refer to black people?

Ok, first off I'm not trying to be mean or racist or w.e else BS is out there. I just want some people's thoughts on this coz I can't think of a good way to do it.

So when I first moved here my parents told me to never say the word n1gg3r and refer to black people as African American. I got that part.

However, there are white people living in Africa too.

So what the hell do we call them?

And what do we call the blacks who came from Africa?

What do I use to refer to black people here? N3groe$? (Sorry had to use the signs coz yahoo blocks it)

It's all so confusing. Well, I've been to gated communities and the ghettos and I've learned a couple of ways to refer to people of different races but this one is a puzzle to me now.

So can you think of a good term?

  • A good standard to look for a partner?

Okay, so I've been thinking a lot about what kinda gal I like and I thought that besides all the trite traits that everyone would like to have in their partner there is only one I think would decide whether the relationship, romantic or not, would work is if my partner will be able to talk about religion, politics, and ethics with me without being very angry and still manage to understand my viewpoint and be genuinely interested in what I have to say.

What I mean is that, they should have the ability to listen to what I have to say and, even though there is something that they don't agree with, they will ask creative questions in order to understand my viewpoint even if it conflicts with theirs.

I have been in many controversial talks with people and every time people just start to shout or even say outright that what I say is wrong without trying to ask what I really mean.

Would you guys agree that this is a good way to look for a partner? After all, if you guys can handle talking about controversies then you guys can handle a marriage :3

  • Question regarding Buddhism?

Okay, so I just talked with my friend yesterday about religion and she said she was a Buddhist. So I asked her what the main goal is for Buddhists, and she said it is, in essence, to end the cycle of life and death of reincarnation so that the suffering an individual experiences will end right?

If I didn't get that right then don't answer the question. Just move on.

If the goal of Buddhism is to end the cycle of reincarnation by reaching Nirvana or doing really good stuff (as she explained) then that's all good. However, I was thinking about it and I thought of another way to end the cycle.

    Nuclear holocaust.

What if we (theoretically of course) had a major nuclear conflict that would essentially wipe out all forms of civilization (even those who survive the initial explosions would still die from radiation poisoning, lack of renewable resources, another Ice Age, a thick blanket of ash enveloping the atmosphere, etc.); basically, it will be very hard to survive and it would take a lot of effort and money. Even if some did survive and manage to procreate, perhaps incest would become prevalent and they would still die off. If they managed to find a way to avoid that, it would take a long time to wait for the Earth to go back to its natural cycle (not to mention the amount of resources it would take to support such a community).

Basically, if Earth become destitute (like Mars) wouldn't the only (theoretical) forms of life left be microorganisms living in extreme environments?

So, will the people get reincarnated as those things and then eventually they will evolve into other things? My friend said that when you get reincarnated first you are a basic organism then you get reincarnated into a better one etc. until you become a human. But, what if (and if you studied biology) most of the ecosystems on Earth will be destroyed as a result of the nuclear holocaust?

It would take so many years for evolution to take place. And she said that it takes a lot of lives for one when being reincarnated (Millions of years).

Say that bacteria X is the only living/starting organism left in the Earth after the nuclear war. Say I am a bacteria X and I need to evolve into Bacteria Y so I can again start the ecosystem. However, say it takes 60 million years for bacteria X to evolve into Bacteria Y. Say I die before 60 million years is over. Then what? What do I turn into? She said that you don't become reincarnated into the same thing again. So what do I turn into?

Did I break the cycle of life and death?

If I did. Then is a nuclear holocaust also a way for Buddhists to achieve their goal of ending the cycle of life and death? I mean, they will go to Hell or Heaven or their respective afterlife realm according to their deeds, but nonetheless it will end the cycle right?

  • Is there joking in heaven?

This question is reserved only for intellectuals who can temper their feelings and personal biases as much as is reasonably possible in order to answer the question with reasonable objectivity.

Assume that there is a heaven; one that is commonly regarded as a place of eternal happiness.

In Earth, we laugh. However, the reasons for laughter vary from comic events to joyful celebrations. It is my understanding that laughter is linked to happiness since it feels good to laugh. However, sometimes in Earth, men make fun at their fellow men. Observers and the insulter may derive laughter, and potential happiness (no matter how negatively regarded), from the funny comment. The target of the comment, however, would potentially be hurt by such comments.

Other cases may involve only jokes. However, a majority of jokes I hear on a daily basis involve crude, vulgar, and "mature" topics.

Of course there are non-offensive jokes like knock knock jokes. These can be funny, but they are seldom told.

My question is this: Will there be joking in heaven since a majority of jokes told on earth are offensive and heaven is a place where no one is supposedly in torment?

(I theorize that there will be laughter. However, the reason for that laughter may be from variegated sources not offensive to anyone but collectively joyful for everyone in this theorized heaven. My question pertains more to whether heaven would be a boring sort of place since (although it is a place of eternal happiness) my Earthly life so far has had a large part of it wherein I have derived laughter at poking fun at daily frustrations and human folly.)

  • How to know if a Dakimakura is fake or real?

I recently got interested in anime and I spotted a dakimakura in the first small anime convention I attended. However, being a noob, I didn't know what I was looking for so a few months later I've been looking around the internet to see if I can get a custom design for my own dakimakura. However, I've been reading in blogs that there are people out there who sell bootlegged dakimakuras and now I'm beginning to compare my own dakimakura with HD pictures of others and I think I'm spotting some dfferences. I've also read that boot leggers also accept custom designs for dakimakuras and sell them.

I'm just unsure now what I need to look for to make sure what I'm getting is legitimate. Could someone please tell me what I can watch out for. How can I tell if I have the real deal or just a fake one?
